To All, Ok i had to start the thread on the Titans. I have read on others threads opinions that the Titans will have some Speed, Skill, Size and maybe the most electrifying player in the district in QB J. Ortega. Question marks will be the Defense and Discipline. I for one agree with another posterr that Coach Gonzales will field a more diciplined Titans team this year than most of Finley's. The biggest concern for me about this team is who put in the work in the offseason ? Conditioning and weight training are vital to the overall health of a program. If the kid's put in the work in the summer i feel really good they could challenge for one of the top 2 spots. If not look for 3rd or 4th place. The Gonzales game should be a good indicator of how the season plays out. Someone else mentioned that the talent on offense this year would be on par with the 2010 team. Jury will be out on that. That 2010 Titan team was lethal at every skill position..... QB, 2 RB's, 2 WR's, 1TE. Those same guy's on offense also flipped over and played some pretty good defense too. All in all im looking forward to the season to see what it holds. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

The talent is there no doubt but big ? Is your coach imo. Can he bring the kids togeather and will they play lights out for him. I for one was bothered by the fact that he had such great qb and didn't use him untill late in the season. He cheated his team by not utilizing the leadership and skill of Ortega early on.

I think VE should not struggle against Gonzales I beleive it will be a good indication of what kind of team you may have this year because you should beat them and not get beat or struggle with them. I beleive the Sandcrabs should beat their 3A teams they play also. I see for VE a good QB and WR returning not sure what you have at running back but VE always has good athletes coming through. I think VE and the other teams in district 30-4A all have the same question mark what kind of defense are they going to have this year with the exception of Calallen the question is in their offense time will tell for all the teams once the season starts..

I think east has an elusive qb and 2 recs. I don't know who their back is and I don't know how good their oline is. As far as the defense isn't that what Gonzales calls? I think the two telling quotes are 'who put the work in in the offseason' obviously if they are not there in the summer then there isn't a whole lot of said discipline that some people think is emerging, amd the second quote ' your coach doesn't have a history anywhere of building a defense worth a d....' I think those two quotes speak volumes especially if he does call the defense. That being said I think everyone has a chance to beat them and they have a chance to beat tm, bee, gp, and west. That puts my vote somewhere between 3rd and 7th but I'm hoping for the latter.

Just a thought, I read in the advocate that someone was quoted as saying what avert said, "for those who participated" in off season work outs will be ahead of those who didn't. Ummmmmm m m m, why aren't they ALL participating!!!!!
In Calhoun all football players participate in offseason workouts. No questions asked. If fact when my son missed because of ortho appt, the track coach? Called and asked why he didn't show up.
The football players I know for fact, attend these workouts w/o being told too. It's something they want to do.
Unless and until Vic schools get participation like that, I don't expect much for either school.
I will say that the parents I work with, mostly from west, said that their off season program is highly participated in, more so than the east program.
Idk if that is fact or not, but they haven't lied to me yet.

In the fall, I talked to a few players from a middle school here in Victoria who just got killed by Refugio middle school/JH. They were making excuses that Refugio used varsity players and they are on steroids blah blah blah. They got beat because they only work out during their football period. They are at the mall, hanging out at the pool, on facebook, etc. Case in point, ran into a student last week..."So, how's your summer?" Kid-"okay, boring. Didn't do too much." I was in Refugio for work back in June. Saw a young man I knew, "So, how's your summer." Kid-"Ah man, been working out, running, getting ready for the season." That's the difference right there. Say it once, I'll say it again. Gonzalez is not the elite coach VISD will have you believe. He had a few good season at Ray, but he also had a stud QB. Not prior, nor since has he ever taken a team to the playoffs. Both Victoria schools have good, family men as coaches, just not good coaches.

Was is a country club town when VHS owned ptlavavca under Weddel and reaves ? Including a 5A state semifinal run and numerous regional 5A trips ?

Last year east turned it up with Ortega. If the kids put in the work and the coach has the kids believing then should be a good team.

See the VHS success in the late 80's and all of the 90's ... There's still hope
