Victoria East didn't exactly get off to a good start vs Georgetown. VE kicked off and yielded a touchdown on the ensuing drive. They then muffed the next two kickoffs, yielding touchdowns on both those drives. They were down 23-0 before they ran an offensive play. The first Offensive play resulted in an interception and that ensuing drive resulted in - you guessed it, another touchdown. Georgetown 30 VE 0 7:55 left in the 1st quarter. Jeez... Wow I'm pretty sure that VE played without their normal starting QB last night - they had a Sophomore starting, but a young Georgetown team smoked them 54-14. The QB isn't going to erase the special teams mistakes, nor the defensive lapses, but hopefully they will get him back and be better than last night. Next week they play Victoria West, so a rivalry game.

Shout out to Boerne Champion in their opening game win over Laredo United South. New QB is the real deal, Sophomore lefty with poise, speed, shiftiness, and a good accurate arm. The offense looked pretty smooth outside of a couple procedure penalties, and the QB bailed them out with his legs when the receivers weren't open.
The defense looked rough in the first half, although they stiffened when necessary. United was successful running the ball at the start of the game, but had no passing game outside of screen passes, so the Chargers were pretty much on top of that after the first quarter.
I think the Chargers were good last night, but could execute better in the red zone on offense. On defense, it was hard to tell what holes existed as United just wasn't very good. It appears that BCs out of district schedule is on the soft side as they play Medina Valley next week, and Laredo Alexander in week 3. This could be intentional to get the Soph QB's feet wet in situations for success.
If I were coaching, I would caution Navarette on his sliding - he makes the decision to slide when running too late! I saw it 3 times last night, and he got lucky to pick up a roughing call that objectively was a bang-bang play. I worry he's going to get a concussion from one of those - better to get down a half step earier!
For now, I'd say that BC is set up pretty well to get the wrinkles ironed out at least.

Special teams was one of their strongest points last year, gotta clean that up........ I believe East's QB is still at a Rangers baseball event in Long Beach, California. At least he was recently. But as aforementioned, getting him back won't fix the special team blunders. Hopefully they can right the ship next week!

I didn't see him at the scrimmage last week, or at least not the video I watched. I don't think he's been practicing much with the team either. I appreciate the link to the game. I searched for that all night last night. But I am technically challenged lol.....

New Braunfels really had a dominant performance vs San Antonio Madison. It’s crazy how far the Mavericks have fallen. They used to be state contenders. Unicorns did about as well as they could in their 5A debut. Short of a few penalties and getting stopped at the 1 just before halftime, it was a pretty solid performance, especially considering season openers. This may be one of the best season openers I’ve seen in a while. Still doesn’t top beating Denton Ryan a few years ago but it’s right up there. HC Brad Molder had a great debut and I’m sure he was a huge reason the Unicorns did so well. New coach, new classification, so new expectations. This is going to be a tough district. I hear ya! It's good to start fast with a new HC - I would worry that the new systems could cause confusion. On a personal side, when I played HS, we got an entire new staff before my Soph year. Lost the first 4 games and looked bad doing it - won the last 6! With regard to Madison - do you wish they had given you a better game? I came away from SVs victory over Roosevelt feeling that way. I know SV will get all they can handle next week vs Brennan, but I would have liked to get a better test on week 1. I'm sure Canyon will give the Unicorns a test next week, especially their defense which should be pretty good in comparison with Madison. The concerns about systemic changes are valid. And it can go either way. Sometimes teams may fumble in the onset but it’s where you finish that counts — as you well know from experience in your 6 game winning streak as a former player lol To your question, you’re probably right that New Braunfels probably should’ve started off with a stronger Week 1 opponent. Madison seemed like a practical one, with an enrollment drop. But in hindsight, Judson or Clemens would’ve probably been a better choice. I’m not ready yet for last second finishes against Denton Ryan so early in the season LOL. I’m feeling good about the D with its shutout and 4 INT. The offense was good. QB Namken is good in his feet and was able to find receivers. I believe Duke in particular got 200+ yard on the night. Our district has done well so far. I just wish Wagner wouldve played a game last night. Now it’s time to turn up our attention to MacArthur though. They have a winnable opener against San Antonio Lee.

I was thinking next week would be a better barometer for the Rangers but the way Reagan whooped Brennan it may be another cakewalk for SV. Then again, maybe Reagan is that good??? Guess Cibolo will find out that next week. The Rattlers certainly looked in mid season form. Overall, I'd say your district didn't disappoint at all in week 1. Damn strong for sure. The thing that sucks is there is going to be at least 1 team staying home from the playoffs that would have made it in any other district in R4 with ease!

Realistically, the jury is still out on SV and I agree that we will know more after next week. Reagan handling Brennan with ease as a bit of a surprose to me, I had the Bears 2nd to Steele in my area rankings. Good matchup next week for the Knights! We better all be on the lookout for MacArthur...LOL

That's good news! I read on another forum that some of the guys that play baseball will not be playing football this season for East. Sux man ..... I know of a few dudes from last year that were a huge part of the team and contributed greatly. Some only Sophomores last year... .

That's a pity - I know that the SV coaches encourage multisport participation and have a number of football athletes participating in BB, Wrestling, Baseball and Track, amongst others. Best wishes to those kids, and to the football team that undoubtedly misses them. They are in the toughest district in Region 4, and will need all hands on deck!
