Victoria East plays some solid D. I’d been dismissing them after losing to Seguin, but in hindsight the Matadors have been overperforming expectation. They could’ve called in their season after Alamo Heights and CC Miller (bar their injuries at the time) but refused to. Don’t give up on your season! Victoria East hasn’t, despite probably missing the playoffs.

NB vs Seguin is the big game in the district next week for sure.

Finally got to watch NB vs SV game this morning. Very well played game on both sides. In the first half, NB looked like a mirror image of SV, did SV-type things on both Offense and Defense, ground the clock and went in to halftime with the lead. The NB running back #26 looked just like SVs #26 running the ball, and Namken looked like SPradling running the ball. NB had success moving the pocket on pass plays and making SV choose between covering the pass or defending the QB run. NB kept the SV linebackers in conflict until late in the first half, when SV changed up their look and brought pressure from the edge and employed a spy to clean up the scrambles.
NB defense played really well, they got burned for a long play on a bubble screen in the 2nd half, but their safeties and linebackers did a great job the whole game filling holes versus SVs run plays. Pass coverage was good, although SV didn't throw much after they secured the lead.
The two key plays were the SV kick return in the second half to set them up on their first 2nd half TD, and the long receiver screen to set up their 2nd.
The margin was small in this game - no turnovers and very few penalties. If NB plays this well the rest of the season they will secure the 3rd seed and should do well in the playoffs. Big game next week vs Seguin, who frankly surprised me by containing Wagner's running game last night.

I can see a potential 3-way tie for 3rd and 4th place - if NB beats Seguin and loses to Wagner, all three teams will be 4-3 and we get to tie breakers for rd and 4th place. Seguin beating Wagner by 1 point figures in there, so watch the margins of the NB/Seguin and NB/Wagner games. Unfortunately, I don't know which tiebreaker the district employs, but usually they try to eliminate based on head-to-head first and then either positive points or point differential between the tied teams.
In the secanrio above the head-to-head is a wash, (each team is 1-1 versus each other), so they would go to points (+ or net) to eliminate the first team - then, to determine the order of they remaining teams, they go head-to-head again.
If Seguin beats NB, I don't see them losing to MacArthur and Wagner would be eliminated in that scenario. From watching both NB and Seguin play SV the last two weeks, I would say that NB is the clear favorite against both Seguin and Wagner, but I didn't think Seguin would beat Wagner nor did I think Vic East would beat BC, so obviously my prognostication skills are quite limited!

This will be the 112th Guadalupe River Bowl and will actually be worth something for the first time in almost 20 years. The mayors do a lot of betting on this one and New Braunfels usually gets our pecans. This is pretty incredible how Seguin is playing this year and hopefully they can keep it up. Probably playing tough teams like Heights and Miller helped them.

I don't see any way Seguin beats NB unless NB has a complete meltdown. Seguin is a better team this year but not at NB's level. The little bit I've gotten to see of NB so far this year I think they've improved week by week significantly and I agree, they have a chance to make some noise in the playoffs and I hope they do. I'm pulling for an all region final from this district!!!

I just watched this game myself and will add that you are correct on what you said about the plays that hurt NB but I'll also add that I was surprised NB did not call a TO before the end of the half to get the ball back with about a minute on the clock. SV was typical SV in this game. Very efficient. NB outgained SV in yardage by quite a bit with about 400 yards to around 250 but SV averaged about 7 yards per play. SV only ran about 35-36 plays where NB ran nearly 70! Both teams are solid and well coached and play disciplined football. Very few penalties in this game and very good sportsmanship as I'd expect from these 2 teams.

Good sportsmanship with the exception of the SV unsporstmanlike conduct penalty for spinning the ball on the ground after their last TD...what a B.S. call - they do not call that every time, the referees need to penalize it every time or never, not the "selectively" enforced way they use it these days.

I agree 100% Unless the player spins the ball at the feet of the defensive player then it SHOULD NOT be called!!! Let the kids celebrate so as long they are not doing it in the face of the opponent!

I have Wagner over BC Pieper big over Vic East SV big over MacA NB over Seguin
If that holds Wagner and Seguin would be tied for the final playoff spot going into week 11. But Wagner closes with NB, and Seguin closes with Mac...

If seguin does beat NB then they will be in and then NB would have to beat Wagner the last week to get that final spot. I'm guessing a 3-way tie between NB/Wag/Seg would come down to positive/neg points in those 3 games??

I’m gonna post this here also, as it gives some context to Friday’s game:
In 1993, San Antonio Express-News sportswriter David King wrote a book called “On, New Braunfels” which detailed the chronology of Unicorn Football up until 1993. The book discussed in great detail the history between New Braunfels and Seguin. The book predates the current moniker of the “Guadalupe River Bowl”, so there is no mention of the name in the book. The rivalry’s title didn’t come into prominence until the early 2000’s. The book also discusses the series record, which at the time was 43-33-3. If you piece together that record along with all games played since that book was written, then the current record has New Braunfels leading Seguin in the series 69-37-3. Thats a total of 109 games. However, some sources place the 2024 game as the 112th game. The book discusses this as well. The book confirms that the rivalry started in 1927, with both teams playing twice a year in the early-mid 1900’s. What about the other two games between 1923-1926-ish? The book confirms that they were not school sponsored events for New Braunfels HS, so the SA E-N does not count them in the running total of games. Therefore, if the official rivalry started in 1927, then it would run consecutively since its official inception year until the current year, making it the oldest, continuous rivalry in Texas HS football. If one decides to count the games from the early 1920’s, then it’s no longer an continual year-to-year matchup.
But what about Sherman vs Denison and Bay City vs El Campo? Aren’t they older? Older, yes. But both rivalries have take at least one year off since their inception year. Sherman vs Denison (The Battle of the Ax) started in 1901, but has not played ever single year since 1901. They are the straight out Oldest Rivalry in the state.
Then there’s Bay City vs El Campo. This rivalry started in 1911, starting a consecutive year-to-year streak in 1920 up until the current year. In other words, they took a few years off in the 1910’s as well. So if you’re looking for the longest year-to-year streak, then this rivalry is the oldest continuous by that specific definition.
However, if you’re looking for the longest string of yearly games that has never been broken since it’s inception year, then your winner is New Braunfels vs Seguin. It too can claim the title of oldest, continuous rivalry in the state of Texas by that definition. Many people probably don’t care about this, but I think it’s an important piece of history to bring up every year as the game renews for its 97th consecutive year.

But Wagner closes with NB, and Seguin closes with Mac... A Seguin win over New Braunfels would be huge, but the Matadors would weather a loss by clinching a spot the following week by beating MacArthur. New Braunfels is in a more precarious situation; both Seguin and Wagner are both bubble teams, and NB needs to beat one of them, or preferably both. If the Unicorns drop both games, then they are surely out of the playoffs. I feel good about NB’s chances, but Seguin has been overperforming throughout district play. This is a stressful week. It’s already stressful enough as a rivalry week, but with the playoffs also on the line, NB needs to be on top of its game.
