Week 9 Matchups
Fri 10/25
San Antonio Pieper @ San Antonio MacArthur @ Heroes Smithson Valley @ New Braunfels San Antonio Wagner @ Seguin Boerne Champion @ Victoria East
Two big games this coming week - SV/NB and Wagner/Seguin. SV/NB for 2nd seed and the loser of Wagner/Seguin is probably out of the running.
I have SV over NB if they play a relatively clean game, but the Rangers have to start getting more turnovers when they get their hands on the ball (3 dropped interceptions versus Seguin last week). This will probably be a close game, as the Rangers will try to pound the ball and eat clock. NB has much more fast strike capability, so I see them trying to throw the ball versus SV to give themselves to outscore the Rangers. A high scoring game favors the Unicorns.
I think Wagner will control the ball vs Seguin's defense so the Matadors won't be able to play fast break basketball with the scoreboard. Wagner has the ability to play D versus the Seguin passing game, so I like them by a touchdon or two.
Pieper easily over Mac, and I think BC will edge Victoria East if they wake up after the long bus ride!

Regarding Smithson Valley, I just talked myself out of a point I thought I as going to make in the differences between last years team and this years team.
Interesting facts comparing the two years - first, regarding the amount of turnovers forced by the SV defense - I thought this year's team was well behind last years, but it turns out they have accumulated the same number to this point in the season as last year.
The offensive yardage is almost identical from last year as well 2425 yds this year and 2401 last year through 7 games. Likewise, on defense last year allowed 1589 yds, this year 1613. Amazingly consistent!
Points for/Against (Through 7 games) 2023: 38.7/9.7 2024: 39.7/12.6 so year over year, very consistent - the only difference is in 2024, there are two outliers - the Rangers two losses to Brennan and Pieper, where they surrendered 391 and 416 yds respectively.
My assumptions were incorrect - SV is still doing what they normally do, just sometimes someone else is better on a given day.

NB defense played their hearts out in the first half. A key drop on a deep ball prevented NB from going into the half with a 15 point lead. A bad punt put Pieper in position to score the tying TD at the close of the half. Should have been 28 -13, wound up tied at 21. I just watched this game and agree. That drop was a walk in TD and the ball was a dime! Also, I saw Pieper get away with a few no calls that were obvious as well as one of their TDs that WAS NOT a TD catch! That was a bad call by the side judge calling that catch a TD when it was caught out of bounds with the receiver making that catch as he was diving. He caught it out of bounds! Pieper in the end just killed NB with their offense in the 2nd half biting off big chunks on the ground and the big pass plays throughout the game were daggers.

I have a feeling that SV will wear out the Unicorns similarly to the way Pieper did. Unicorns will try to control the game the same way that SV normally does on the ground, but the Rangers potent defense will make NB go to the air, forcing some NB turnovers in the process. As much as I hate to say this, I think SV wins in double digits. But i would love to be wrong. The EN is billing this as a battle of playoff positioning, but the Unicorns haven’t even clinched a playoff berth yet and still have Seguin and Wagner on the schedule. Boerne Champion vs Victoria East fascinates me. I want to see how East stacks up vs the Chargers. Unicorns struggled with the Chargers early and were able to make adjustments in the second half. East has shown similar ability to make adjustments as well. Unfortunately, this might ultimately be a battle of 13-5A also-rans, as both lost crucial matchups to both New Braunfels and Seguin

He said it was questionable, but you had to go with the call on the field. I agree with you, I didn't see how the receiver could have dug that ball out without some part of his body touching out of bounds first.

That’s cool that you got a referee friend to fall back on with questions. I don’t get too hung up on calls though. It is what it us and doesn’t change the reality outcome of the game. If anything, it’s a good learning tool to be improve chances in a future game. Hopefully tonight’s game vs us both injury free and minimal penalties. Btw parking at Unicorn Stadium is abysmal right now with New Braunfels HS renovations (which will take years BTW). There is a shuttle at Oakwood Church off Loop 337 nearby which will shuttle fans to the campus. Plenty of parking at the shuttle parking.

Unfortunately, this might ultimately be a battle of 13-5A also-rans, as both lost crucial matchups to both New Braunfels and Seguin I think you hit the nail on the head with regard to the SV/NB matchup. After seeing NB play a couple of times, I think the key thing for NB is being able to assert themselves on the OLine - NB is similar to Pieper in that they have some big, powerful bodies on the line. Pieper was fairly successful vs SVs defensive line. If SV gets them in obvious pass situations, they can really rush the passer and are great in coverage. I think NBs best chance is to make this a high scoring game. NB may be well served to throw a little on 1st down to keep SV guessing a little - but it just can't only be quick game - SV is great at reading QBs and jumping routes. I would think NB should try to hit a couple of big ones on early downs. On offense, SV has seen a lot of 3 down fronts, and likes to run gap run schemes against them - NBs defense (especially the LBs and Safeties) need to flow quickly to beat the blocks. Of course, SV has counters off everything - SV forces the defense to be disciplined. You can plan on seeing a couple of reverses and QB runs in addition to the standard tailback runs. I especially like when they pull the play side guard in the opposite direction with a quick pitch to the RB running outside - it looks like a counter bootleg to the defense, and SV has had good success with it. I'm not going to the game tonight, so I'll be relying on you to keep me updated!

NB has to put themselves in 3rd & 4 or less often. 3rd and longs will be trouble for them I think. If they can avoid negative yardage plays and do well on 1st downs they can stay in the game and have a chance to win it. My best guess is SV 30 NB 21

That's good gouge - I've been doing that since they redid 337 - I used to park across the highway and ... Scoot! Of course, I was much younger and more agile then!

SV stats may be similar but this years team is drastically different than last season. Last years team was dominant. Rarely did starters play much past the first series in the second half creating depth for their championship run. I’ve been to every game this season and SV is playing their starters late into games if not the entire game.

Rarely did starters play much past the first series in the second half creating depth for their championship run. I’ve been to every game this season and SV is playing their starters late into games if not the entire game. I noticed this. New Braunfels is rarely this competitive with Smithson Valley, despite the loss. I think SV is seeing the impact of the opening of Pieper set in. Talent pool has diminished. New Braunfels is starting to see this already as well, with Long Creek opening also. There were still some trademark characteristics. SV still has a stingy defense that managed to make a goal line stand on the Unicorns. Special teams is still a huge plus, rarely allowing NB to run back kicks. They also managed to give SV short fields, placing a huge burden on the NB defense. Unicorns D shined in this game. Congrats to SV. Disappointed in the loss, but no time to point. New Braunfels’s biggest game of the season is next week vs Seguin! Bring on the Guadalupe River Bowl!
