The issue is the enrollment gap not the number of schools per state championship. 4A has as many schools as it currently can to fill out 32 districts, but it actually has too many schools to have a decent enrollment range. Specifically, the divisions do help 4A out in football, but outside of football, the gap is insane.Just scrap the divisions and go to 10A. But, once again, multi-HS ISDs in 6A don't want their schools split up. But isn’t the enrollment gap issue mitigated by the divisional split? You no longer have a 2:1 gap in 4A districts. But in 6A you could still have 2,220 schools playing schools more than twice as large. Having a 7A won’t fix it, but it will relieve so many enrollment gaps. The 4A enrollment gap is insane for sports other than football. Meanwhile, Cedar Hill and Westlake have done mighty well as "smaller" schools in the land of the giants. Here's the list of schools over 4000: Allen, Plano East, Plano West, Plano, Galena Park North Shore, Duncanville, Conroe, Lewisville, Conroe The Woodlands, Pasadena Dobie, Alief Elsik, Dallas Skyline, Coppell, Alief Hastings, Arlington Houston, Pearland, Deer Park About 6 of those have good programs, while the rest are average at best. Are all those extra kids really contributing to the football program?

There are several good ideas here. Start writing the U.I.L. Make some noise. The squeaky wheel gets the oil...usually.

What's missing from this article is who and how this matter would be decided and apparently the author didn't ask. The U.I.L. is not in a vacuum. In the past, when a major change like this is proposed, they polled the school superintendents to get their input. Then the superintendents would get input from not only coaches, but others involved in U.I.L meets such as journalism, cheer sponsors, band leaders and debate. Do they poll only 6A? I would hope that if they polled all classifications, that the decision would be weighted more to what the bigger schools want, since a lot more students would be affected at a school with say 4000 than one with only 400. In the past as with the split conferences, they did a mock realignment before the polling so that everybody could see what it would be like, so there would be no surprises once it happened. I would hope that they would do the same in this matter. I suspect that there would be a lot of opposition in higher classifications.

Well, the UIL's mission is to take the top 250 schools as 6A, then keep a 2:1 ratio in all of the other classifications. UIL doesn't currently care about the ratio in 6A, but even if they did, it would be 2:1, and your matchup was firmly inside that. It's also something that could be fixed by a divisional split, if 6A would just get on board with it. So you would rather give the largest 100 schools an even easier path to championships in non-football sports than direct the help where help is truly needed (4A)? I'm not sure I grasp what you are saying fully. I think if they created a 7a and took the largest 120-140 enrollments into it they'd be able to redraw all enrollment numbers to help all schools become more equal. I'm not talking about just getting the biggest of the big out of 6a and not reworking numbers. Sorry if I came across that way before. Just now going back and looking through all this. What I meant is if UIL currently uses (or attempts to use) a 2:1 ratio between the upper and lower cutoffs for each conference, then if applied to 6A, Clemens vs Katy would firmly be within that 2:1 range. 3400 divided by 2600 = a multiplier of 1.3. BUT if UIL would bring split divisions to 6A instead of adding 7A, then 6A D1 would have enrollments from 2800+ and Clemens would be in division 2. So if 6A division 2 is from 2300-2800 and division 1 is 2800+, a 2:1 ratio being used for those D1 schools would mean anything over 5600 isn't within that range. The only school over 5600 is Allen. And there are only 11 schools over 4200 (a 1.5:1 ratio for D1). It's plenty fair.

Good stuff rtxc1. I do agree there is some work to do and it'll never be perfect but still, the UIL needs to do something to even it up and if that means further travel for 6a teams to compete in district, sobeit.
And just so you know, I'm an old Clemens alum and do still pull for them but only when they are not playing Steele. Both my kids graduated from Steele as did many nephews and nieces along with friends kids. I also have a couple friends that teach and coach there including the head basketball coach. I know......my screen name always has people wondering why I was such a big steele fan when they are Clemens' arch rival. lmao
