Yea our basketball team for the last six or so years has been mediocre to bad. We've been in the playoffs in the 4th slot a couple of times, by default because the two or three teams below us were worse and we barely scraped by them. The issue with basketball goes back mainly to baseball and a certain range of kids going back maybe 10 years now were groomed to play baseball in the spring and of course a few of them got fed the baseball only syrup and dropped football too. We had a few classes who won district basketball in middle school and even finished towards the top their freshmen year. But the pressure put on the kids by the baseball and/or their parents to give up basketball depleted the basketball program of some of the better basketball players. So the following year the drop off in performance of the JV and Varsity was very noticeable. And because of this, I think if kind of took the wind out of the coaching staff. What didn't help is we didn't have a youth league on this side of town for a few years because the YMCA quit sponsoring it out here. It got restarted a few years ago and is actually doing real well, but it would help if we could get someone with some fire in his belly to take over the high school basketball program so he can do exactly what football and other sports do well around here and coordinate with the youth leagues and the middle school. Personally I think there are a few local established coaches who would chomp at the bit to be the Head Coach here because they know if Calallen got a better rep in a short period for putting up some good basketball teams, the kids who are going to Flour Bluff, CC Vets, London among others to the play basketball due to their programs strength would come here instead. Like I said, I'd bet a few dollars we have lost families to other districts because basketball is stuck in a rut and we might be missing out on siblings who are good at other sports on either the boys or girls side. Or just some outstanding students and parents who would be an asset to the community. It's funny the focus over at TM is just on beating Calallen and that would be feather in their cap for all time. Does it ever dawn on those who think this if they can beat Calallen during a normal Calallen year , it might be possible they could have a team that can run the table and win district and make a good playoff run? Short answer is no they don't. When TM made the playoffs those two years, those boys were told they suck by parents and fans simply because they lost to Calallen. Same thing happened to my senior class that was 7-0 before losing to Calallen and finished 8-2. Unbelievable. It's not like losing to Robstown or Kingsville for crying out loud. But you are correct because now thinking back to the last time TM had a legit shot at beating Calallen and nearly did so in 2014 losing 14-6, they mailed it in for the rest of the season only beating Moody and Miller. The rest of the games they got hammered. They came into Calallen 0-2, but had lost and not to ugly to Sinton (who made the semis) and Orange Grove who went three rounds deep in the playoffs. Calallen was so Jekyll and Hyde that year.

There’s the old King. I think everyone would like to see TM competitive again. Definitely would. Ron Bull days strike a memory? 👀WildBill ever return from up north? We haven’t been blessed with his infinite knowledge of everything irrelevant.

Sinton for few years in mid 90's had a basketball program, help that in those years they had players ranging from 6'4 to 6'9. Won state title in '95 with giants on the team. Teams down here just don't have the size overall to go all the way in basketball.

We need to hear from Johnny Duval. He was playing for TM as a freshman the last time they beat Calallen. His basketball jersey number is also retired by TM. Help us out JD.

Like I've said multiple times on this board, if TM went 1-9 and just beat Calallen, the community would carry the boys off like they were state Champs, but if the went 9-1 and that loss was to Calallen, they'd be told how much they suck.

I understand the want to beat Cal by them but to carry on this way by the parents is probably their biggest problem right now and what is holding them back. Hell, if I was out there busting my azz every day and listened to something like that I would not be too damn motivated either I don't think.

Sounds like if that were to happen and it the weather conditions were right.. the following morning NW Corpus might have smog like Beijing or Mexico City due to all the smoke from the BBQ pits in Annaville. LOL The longer it goes without them beating Calallen, the chances of winning the lotto or at least matching 5 of 6 numbers get better.

A couple of years ago when we played them, they came out of the gate on fire and looked like they were going to make a game of it. But as soon as we scored a TD that put us on top for good, they folded like a cheap tent. It was almost like they knew what was going to come next... It's hard not to feel for the kids if that is indeed the standard.

I drank the anti Calallen kool-aid until I came back as an adult and interviewed with Danaher. Not only did he remember me from my playing days, he remembered the day I moved to TM and the reason I left. He and I talked for almost an hour and I was impressed he remembered something that had occurred 15 years previously. Since that day, with the exception of the TM game, I cheer for Calallen and when I get the chance to see or listen to a Calallen game I am right there. I am glad to cheer them on and see them be successful. I dream that one day TM will turn the corner and stop being so hell bent on just 1 game in the season. Then they will finally get to the point of consistency and hopefully winning games regularly. I would love to see the them beat Calallen some day, but if they consistently go 8-2, 7-3, 9-1 even 6-4 and make playoffs and get some decent 2 or 3 round runs for a bit, I would be extatic for them.

A few seasons ago when they beat Calallen in baseball on our own field, the celebrated like they won the state game in Round Rock... I think the losing streak in baseball went back just as far as the football streak albeit they lost some very close ones like 1-0 and let a few slip away in the last inning in a few games.

It's kinda crazy how one school can get into the other's head. Heck man, you should have seen Judson celebrate in 2017 after beating Steele for the first time. And the Rockets have like 5 or 6 big trophies in the their case! lol Steele beat them 7 or 8 straight times since they started playing one another in 2010. A couple of those Steele wins were by 1 point and one of those was in 2OT so I can see why the Judson kids were excited to finally get the monkey off their backs.

Yep, that is what it's like. I was the boy's soccer coach for 1 season while Williams was AD. His only demand, beat Calallen. He told me that he knew the team was not good (they were winless in 9 seasons prior and their best record at that time was 3 wins), but he said if I wanted to stay as coach I had to beat Calallen. We beat Robstown twice that year to go 2-18, second best record in the soccer program. When I met with him afterward, he said well you didn't beat Calallen so I'm not sure if I want you to coach next year. Needless to say I left to Kingsville and not only beat Calallen in soccer but ran the score up on TM to prove a point too. My Kingsville team made the playoffs and TM went winless again... I know coach Miller has a better mindset, but unfortunately that community doesn't. They have to let it go and start viewing a successful program as one that consistently wins more than they lose and makes playoff runs consistently.
