Having coached for Kingsville several years ago, as far as football goes you are correct only subvarsity games are played there. But that is where they hold all soccer games. I'm not sure if they still do this but when they know a great soccer team is coming to play there, they do not cut the grass so that it is overgrown by game time and the ball does not move as well unless you get it up in the air. And to add to it the light poles are nearly on the game field it's crazy. Both bleachers are termite infested and cracking. You get splinters in your butt half the time.... Now for football yes Beeville is terrible but they did do some small improvements several years ago before and during Soza... With that being said, it's sad to think that even with improvements it is still terrible. Also, I want to add the skidmore-tynan stadium is terrible too. I went to play there one time and they had 3 inch trenches for line markers and hash marks, not to mention it's in the middle of a cow pasture so at that time cows were held back by a rickety barbed wire fence. Now I think they built a real fence around it but I've heard the trenches are still there and it's still at the cow pasture.... I heard once upon a time, the AD back in the 80's tried to get the school district to build the high school their own stadium so they wouldn't have to lease Javelina and of course the school board said no. IS that correct? MOPAC is sort symbolic of what was and still is the Kingsville High School athletic program as it's been a secondary concern for decades by the community and school board. And yes, that has contributed to them losing student population to Corpus and other area schools with parents who might work at the University or the NAS who will commute. Living in the shadows of the great history of A&I football can do that I guess? Moving to 3A helped them, and they had some good showings when Whit was there and McClusky. In fact I think it was one of those teams in the mid 90's where I saw them play in those black and gold unis and I thought they were the Colorado Buffaloes because they were huge. I think they had two offensive linemen who signed schollies with TCU and one came back and made his name on the Javs after a year or two up there? Yes you are correct from all I heard from staff... Other coaches lobbied for it too because they preferred to have their own stadium. There was talk at one time to renovate the mopac field to be their stadium but that fell through, they also have the area on hm king campus to redo the area the use as a practice facility to be a full stadium.

Nobody in the Coastal Bend had more talent than Kingsville in the 80s and 90s. It just never comes together in Kingsville. Like you said, a community that doesn't really care about that program and also a bunch of kids that play like they are playing for a losing program and a community that doesn't really care. Kingsville had some monster sized kids all through the 80s and 90s and lots of playmakers. Just never really had the backing or a great coach.

Even Van Tom said If Kingsville ever got their shiat together, they would be a top team every year in Texas.. That was back in the day when Whitiker was there before Heney or Haney or whoever replaced him. It seemed they always focused on basketball.. Idk...

The fact they had and still have a good deal with TAMUK with the stadium should free up money to hire and retain staff and build and maintain your other facilities, but they never looked at it that way. But Kingsville is not alone with being a lousy high school program in a love and die college football town. San Marcos hastraditionally sucked, but SWT wasn't too far behind them although both had some good years here and there. A&M consolidated finally built their own stadium to get out the shadows of A&M. Hunstsville had some good teams in the 80s and 90's, but nothing state power worthy. San Angelo Central still can't win the district in that area despite the decline of Permian and Midland Lee from top tier status . Something about playing second fiddle does something, IMO.

The problem for San Angelo Central though is yes Lee and Permian have been in decline but Abilene and Abilene Cooper took over where those 2 left off. Central has a good shot at winning that district this season though. Davis is going in his 5th season with the program, the Coach Davis that had a plan that built up the Sinton and Alice great teams, and is returning 6 offensive and 9 defensive starters. I remember Huntsville having the #1 ranked team in the state back in either the late 80s or early 90s. But after that I never really heard much about them again.

They brought in a guy from Wyoming that had coached arena league ball after Whitaker and he had no discipline with those guys. He called them losers and a lot worse after TM beat them on a last second field goal his first year.

It's one of the few towns I've been to where people would go to see the band march at halftime and then leave. Kingsville has always had a good band. Last time Calallen played them, it seemed like one of the bigger bands in entire area in all classes. Like their Texas Tech like fight song or whatever you call it.

PLC parking, fans sitting on visiting side just to harass the visitors. Alice seats are like lava and they too sit fans on visitors side and restrooms are rediculous, never have congestion stand stocked on visitor. GP needs a lot of revamping, now getting new track and big multi use building. Calallen wasted money. Never fill up stadium even on big games. Parking sux, always wet cars getting stuck and rude fans .

Scot Hafley who is now at my old school and still stinks. Remember Eppy hated the guy when he was at Kville. I soon found out why.

We aren't gonna give you an entire side so half of it can be empty. Or you can tell your school to buy out the entire side like Edcouch did a few years ago. Alice fans were pissed. Lots of Alice fans stood while Edcouch's side was only maybe 70% full. But they bought out the tickets that they didn't sell so we couldnt sit there. It was annoying but genius on their part I have to admit.
