How good is 31-5a this year as I see all 4 teams remain alive with two of them getting past GP and Calallen this past week.
I know the Calallen loss came in a one-gamer but GP was beaten 2 of 3.
My question is this....was 30 a little down this year or is 31 just that good?

My question is this....was 30 a little down this year or is 31 just that good? That's a good question and I guess we will find out next week when at least two of these teams from 31 will play two from the Hill Country district in the next round. Will it be an all Hill Country regional for a ticket to Round Rock or Valley vs a Hill Country school. Or an all valley regional final? I think 30 as whole was down this year and I saw this early with how well the better teams did in out of area non district tourneys early in the season. In past years, the Corpus area schools would either win those tourneys out right or at least win their pool in pool play and advance and this year, that wasn't the case in many of these tourneys. For example Calallen didn't do so hot in the San Antonio tourney and struggled with teams in the McAllen tourney where in past years, we'd 10 run rule and empty the bench in a few of those games. In fact, we beat the same Palmview team 3-1 in the McAllen tourney and lost to East Central in SA Tourney and tied Madison which wasn't near the team they were in the past. Other teams in the area you would normally see beat respectable programs in tourneys in Houston or other parts of the state didn't do so hot this year. And again that was against some so-so teams as well. I will say the valley is catching up with some good quality baseball being played down there and really if they want to make breakthrough in another sport other than soccer, this is where it's going to occur. But one year of defeating the big bad wolves of the Coastal Bend doesn't make a trend. Come back next year with the same question and see where things stand. I don't know what the answers are for other schools in the area, but for Cal it's like I said in previous post. A program refocus needs to be in place starting with next January with no one being guaranteed a slot on any team in the program and not discouraging multi sport participation. Really I think one of our issues in years past at this time is just general burnout from kids who are being "encouraged" to play year around baseball and eventually it catches up to the kids in form of injuries or fatigue. Throw in end of the school year stuff and graduation for seniors and it's a recipe for having a season end unexpectedly.

Tivy is young this year and they lost two close games to BC in district. I would expect DS to be favored over Tivy this round.

I think injuries and fatigue definitely play a part in those kids that play year-around, but I think the main problem that I see seems to be complacency. I haven't felt a sense of urgency from our squad in years. I'm not implying that they don't care, it's more like they have they don't quite understand the gravity of the situation because there has always been another game tomorrow for them.

Very much appreciated and completely understand what you said. I remember Laredo fielding some great baseball teams in the past and think we likely will see a surge in the RGV teams for sure. However, don't undersell SA East Central as they were a solid team this year and took SA Johnson 3 games in their series in the 2nd round.

I'm not implying that they don't care, it's more like they have they don't quite understand the gravity of the situation because there has always been another game tomorrow for them. One thing which tends to feed complacency is the sense that some of the kids get an automatic spot on JV or Varsity coming out of 8th grade because they performed well on the select circuit and/or one of Oil Belt's teams which did well on the state and national levels. So in the young mind, the incentive to work harder becomes secondary because they've already made it unless they are working on a college scholarship chance. Add in the burnout I've seen with some of the same kids over the last few seasons, one can see why our post season runs have been shorter than the norm of the late 90's and early 2000's. We need to go back to old school Chapman baseball were accountability was front and center. One thing that would help is getting rid of the 30 man rosters on our Freshmen teams via cuts and do cuts at all levels. That would make some work hard right off the bat including some of the noted above who think their ticket is already punched. Plus it would free up some of those kids to go back to other sports they possibly quit in order to focus on baseball in spring such as basketball or track. Both of those programs have been hurt in a significant way by this baseball only mentality and some of those kids who gave up other sports thinking or being led they would be significant contributors in baseball, later find out that's not the case and quit baseball and don't return to those sports. Instituting cuts would get the message to some before high school and maybe they won't go the baseball only route. Regardless, coaches in schools or select leagues shouldn't be discouraging kids from playing other sports directly or indirectly because as we see on an increasing basis, more individuals in the pro and college baseball ranks are speaking out and encouraging multi sport participation because it's not only good for the body, but the mind as well. But with the select leagues, it's more about the money vs what it was just a few years ago.

I think year round sports cause a lot of issues. I have been happy to hear college coaches say they look for multiple sports recruits. There is reason every sport had it's own season once upon a time. That was from the Pros down to Pee Wee level in every sport. Now I know the Pros it's driven by $$$$ and maybe even some of the owners should step back for the preservation of the long term health of their players, go back to Super Bowl being played in Mid January and the World Series in October and the NBA finals about this time of year. Urban Myer made it public a few years ago with one of this star players and the subject of multi sport athletes that he went to his basketball games just to see how he'd act in role where he was not the showcase player. So on top of the physical issues, playing multi sports puts a kid in a situation where you have to adapt your own skills from being the go to player in one sport to possibly just being a worker bee if you will in another. And that's what you will become in most cases once you make the jump from high school to college once you are in camp with another number of top athletes. At least until you get your feet wet and go through the grind for a season or two.

My son decided this year he didnt want to do baseball. Played since he was 3. He did football, soccer and track. Now after I took him with me to play golf the other day, he thinks he is a golfer. π€£π€£

I'm at a 10 and just want to get back to a single digit hdcp one more time. Get that boy fitted with new Pings and have father son time for life. :-)

It's interesting that all of the schools that beat the corpus district line up next to each other from Rio Grande City to Mission.. I think at least one of them will be playing for the regional championship in a couple of weeks.
