Canyon Lady Eagles shock No. 1-ranked Aledo in softball playoff opener By Terrence Hunley terrence.hunley@amarillo.com Welcome to the party, Canyon. Matching up in a Region I-5A semifinal series with defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Aledo was the Lady Eagles softball team’s chance to prove it belonged with the best softball teams in the state. One game into the three-game series, the Lady Eagles made a state take notice as they beat Aledo, 2-1, on Friday at Hermleigh. Canyon (31-7) snapped a 44-game winning streak for the defending state champions. Aledo is 17-1. “It’s a huge win for us,” Canyon coach Nicole Coffee said. “That was our goal going in was getting game one. The fans were crazy. it was hard to communicate with the girls by how loud it was. it came down to who played a better ball game.” The Lady Eagles turned to freshman pitcher Kyra Lair, who handled the pressure of the big game. Lair threw a three-hitter and struck out five. “The pitcher threw one heck of a game,” Aledo coach Jeff Lemons said. “She threw hard, and she threw strikes. She was an effective wild. She took it to us. We didn’t have an answer. She beat us. We had maybe five base runners on all night. We got caught out of position on defense. The center fielder (Cambry Hedger) makes a sliding catch to take two runs away from us. We never really threatened her. We had no answer for her.” The game was scoreless before Aledo broke through in the top of the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles responded in the bottom of the sixth as Makenzie Moore tripled to drive in Sloane Precure and Morgan Blackburne, who was running for Lair, for a 2-1 lead. Lair finished off Aledo in the seventh for the win. Game two of the series is set for 11 a.m. today at Hermleigh, with Game 3 following, if necessary. Coffee said winning game one gives the Lady Eagles an edge heading into today. “It’s huge because it gives us confidence,” Coffee said. “We know tomorrow is going to be just as hard if not harder. We are hoping to take care of it in two. We have to come out and minimize the errors again and keep our bats going like we did today.” amarillo.com/sports/high-school-sports/2015-05-22/canyon-lady-eagles-shock-no-1-ranked-aledo-softball-playoff

Congrats, y'all are racking up those Lone Star Cup points. I think the Lone Star Cup is too elusive! How are you feeling about the Hallsville matchup? Hallsville is a good team and can swing the bat. Hopefully the girls are taking everything one game at a time. Lovejoy has played Hallsville in the playoffs multiple times, and in multiple sports so we are familiar with them. Lovejoy is #9 (this week, we weren't ranked the week before) and Hallsville is #2, but those are coaches polls so I don't put much stock in them. Lovejoy, much like Aledo, is use to being rooted against... I'm sure the Bearcats #1 are ready for Azle #3.

I'm sure they want nothing more than to return the favor to us. But at the same time I know these girls want to repeat. The distance between us is 17 miles. And yeah I think we are use to people wanting us to lose. Nothing new. I will say Lovejoy has impressed me this year. Region finals in softball & beat Aledo in the semifinals to eventually become volleyball state champions! It would be nice to play yall in softball to try and turn the tables lol.

Aledo and Hallsville are the only schools in 5A that have both baseball and softball going. Georgetown would join that list if they can beat Flour Bluff on Monday.
