Aledo primed for another run at state softball championship By Kevin Casas Special to the Star-Telegram The demand for time and appearances has doubled for Aledo’s softball team. State titles can cause that. So with the crisp winter weather still afoot but hints of spring’s warm climate to come, the 2014 Class 4A state champion Bearcats found time for batting cages and fielding drills this preseason. Although Aledo doesn’t officially begin its schedule until a Feb. 24 matchup with Rockwall, Monday is the first day UIL softball teams can begin the regular season. A handful of games are scheduled, with Birdville at Southlake Carroll first at 5 p.m. Aledo is the preseason No. 1 in Class 5A, according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings. And the hype that goes with that, means it’s not just the community of Aledo taking notice. “Just a few weeks back, we took a bus over to Granbury for a girls and boys basketball game,” softball coach Jeff Lemons said. “It was just a little way of saying thank you to all of the support they gave us last season. “But what we saw and what we found out later was that it gave a little energy boost to both Aledo teams. Winning state titles here isn’t just about our team, it’s about our school and the town.” With seven of the nine regulars from last season’s lineup returning, Aledo is primed for another run at a state crown. It was Aledo’s second softball title, but first under Lemons’ watch. “We don’t have a target on our back anymore, it’s a huge target,” he said. “There’s no hiding anymore, and we’re not just the team that’s going to sneak under the radar. We’re everyone’s state championship game now.” With the core group returning, the Bearcats are a considerable favorite. But Lemons said returning to Austin is far from a foregone conclusion. “The idea around here is that we’re going back every year,” Lemons said. “And we have a fantastic opportunity to do that, but what folks don’t realize is that teams in our own district like Burleson and Joshua are a lot better.” Pitcher Lauren Craine returns for her senior season after going 24-1 and earning a first-team selection to the Star-Telegram Super Team. Craine also hit .500, one of four Bearcats hitters to hit .500 or better in 2014. Outfielder Bree Strasbourg hit .571, shortstop Allie Arneson .538 and first baseman Chickie Cook hit .517. All return as seniors. Also among the mix is third baseman and Texas A&M pledge Riley Sartain, who hit .458 last season. www.dfw.com/2015/02/15/969394/aledo-primed-for-another-run-at.html

Aledo Sports Daily- Riley Sartain Grand Slam and Chickie Cook HR Lift Ladycats over New Rival Burleson Centennial 18-5
By Steve Keck- Aledo Sports Daily
Spartan Field, Burleson, TX—Everything was set up favorably for the Class 5A # 5 Burleson Centennial Lady Spartans to upset the # 1 ranked Aledo Ladycats on Tuesday night in Burleson.
The Lady Spartans were 5-0 outscoring opponents (Plano East, Del Valle, Kennedale, Prosper, and Everman) by a combined 73-5. The Lady Spartans already had a District 8-5A win over Everman 20-2.
Because of the weather, Aledo had just one game that counted in 2015. The Ladycats beat district rival Joshua 11-0 on March 7. Even this game had to be re-scheduled from Monday.
Taking an early season victory from Burleson Centennial was huge for the Ladycats traveling on the road. The Lady Spartans and Ladycats are the two premiere teams in District 8-5A. The rest of the district should be strong but Aledo and Centennial are elite. Keep in mind this district has six teams who made the playoffs last year.
Dial back to last year when Aledo was in District 7-4A and Centennial was in District 8-4A. Both teams easily won their district and cruised into the playoffs. The two districts faced off in the first round of the playoffs. Centennial, Joshua, and Burleson advanced with Aledo beating Crowley for the only win from District 7-4A.
It looked like another playoff showdown between Aledo and Centennial but the Denton Guyer Wildcats upset Burleson Centennial two games tone. The Lady Wildcats were a worthy opponent and they gave Aledo their best series in the 2014 playoffs in the next round.
Flashback to 2013 Playoffs:
The 2015 Ladycats and Lady Spartans have some of the same key players who battled it out in the 2013 Region I Quarterfinal playoffs.
The opening game of that series has to be one the most exciting games in the history of Aledo Softball. Maybe not as good as the state game in 2007 when Whitney Canion pitched like 50 scoreless innings.
The excerpt below is from my coverage of the 2013 playoffs and gives Aledo fans a taste of how this rivalry developed:
The Ladycats built a 10-2 lead and were still batting in the bottom of the fifth. Aledo already had five runs in the inning keyed by a bases loaded hit by pitch by Kayden Kirkpatrick, a two-run double by Alli Ramsey, and a RBI single by Ally Gabbert.
With two on and only one out, Allie Arneson hit a line shot toward the gap in left center. Burleson Centennial LF Hannah Tomme made a tremendous running catch to rob Arneson of extra bases. Another two inches on the ball hit by Arneson would have won the game for the Ladycats by the Ten-Run-Rule.
Burleson Centennial scored two more runs in the top of the sixth and it appeared to be too little, too late. Aledo failed to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Ladycat starter Lauren Craine cruised through the first four innings without allowing a base runner. Two long innings in the fifth and sixth started taking a toll on Aledo’s ace pitcher.
In the top of the seventh, the first six Lady Spartans reached base without Aledo recording an out. One of the Lady Spartans reached base by an error, but they were finding a hitting zone against Craine. Burleson Centennial closed the score to 10-8 and their potent clean-up hitter Madison Thompson strolled to the plate with two on.
Thompson had nine home runs during the season. She took the first pitch from Craine deep to center field for a three-run home run giving the Lady Spartans a dramatic come back and an 11-10 lead. It was the first home run allowed by Craine all season.
Still with no outs in the seventh, Coach Lemons summoned Tori Gore to pitch for Craine. The first hitter smashed a ball off Gore and ended up at second base with a double.
In a huge key of the win, Gore shook off the injury and remained on the mound. She struck out the next hitter for the only Ladycat strikeout of the night. The runner advanced to third on a ground out to Allie Arneson at SS, but Gore was able to get a ground ball to Ally Gabbert to end the top of the seventh. The key insurance run was never able to score for Burleson Centennial.
Gore was up first for the Ladycats in the bottom of the seventh. She almost beat out a routine grounder to 2B but was out by a whisker. Haylee Bowden hit a hard liner to the pitcher Ashlee Gibson who made a great play to rob Bowden.
The Ladycats were down to their last out. Allie Arneson came up with a large crowd from both sides chanting for their team. It was a playoff atmosphere at its best as Aledo’s crowd was encouraging Arneson and the Centennial crowd were encouraging Gibson.
It didn’t take long for Arneson to make something happen. She lined the first pitch to LF for a single to keep Aledo’s hopes alive.
Rhylie Makawehad an epic battle with Gibson. She worked a full count before fouling off two pitches. On the eight pitch of the at bat, Makawe drove a line drive just inside the bag at third base for a single.
Chickie Cookwas down in the count 1-2 when the next pitch ticked off the glove of the catcher. An alert Arneson made a mad dash for third and was safe without a throw. Makawe followed by taking second. On the next pitch, Cook laced a double into left center scoring both Arneson and Makawe. The walk-off hit was the thrilling ending to a great playoff softball game.
Tori Gore shut down Centennial the next game and Aledo was on their way to the state tournament a few games later.
Fast Forward to 2015:
These two teams set for battle in a make-up game in Burleson. It turned out to be all Aledo as the Ladycat powerful bats scored in every inning with 16 hits. Five of the hits were for extra bases as Aledo added six walks, a hit batter, and put 18 runs on the scoreboard.
The Ladycats wasted no time in jumping on Centennial starter Haley Kimberling. Allie Arneson singled followed by another single by Rhylie Makawe. Riley Sartain was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Chickie Cook got an RBI the easy way by drawing a base on balls. Kadyn Kirkpatrick brought home two runs with a single. Ashton Adkins followed with another RBI single. Alli Ramsey tripled in two more runs for a 6-0 Aledo lead. Arneson stroked another single putting Aledo up 7-0 at the end of the first half inning.
Centennial scored two runs on two singles and a double to make the score 7-2 after one full inning.
Adkins doubled home Sartain who had walked to open the Aledo second inning. Lauren Craine had a 1-2-3 bottom of the second with Aledo in the lead 8-2.
In the third, Arneson doubled home Mary Myers for another Ladycat run in the top of the third for a 9-2 Aledo lead.
Centennial had a big inning in the bottom of the third scoring three more runs and it looked like they would make a game of it cutting Aledo’s lead to 9-5 at the end of three innings.
Chickie Cook opened the fourth by blasting a home run. Adkins scored when Landri Mays reached on an error to put Aledo up 11-5 after the top of the fourth inning.
Senior RHP Lauren Craine proved why she was All State the past two seasons. Craine is simply the best pitcher in Class 5A and she sat down the powerful Lady Spartans without a hit, walk, or run the final three innings.
While Craine and the Ladycat defense were shutting down Centennial, the Ladycat offense was far from taking the rest of the game off. The Ladycats scored two in the top of the fifth inning on sacrifice flies by Sartain and Adkins.
The wheels started coming off for the Lady Spartans in the top of the sixth. Pitcher Haley Kimberling started to lose control. Mays opened the inning by reaching on an error. Myers, Arneson and Makawe all walked scoring one run. Riley Sartain removed all doubt by smashing a grand slam putting Aledo up 18-5.
The Ladycats are home on Tuesday against the Everman Lady Bulldogs. On Friday, the Ladycats travel to Crowley.

I think the non district games were cancelled due to weather.
