No one is making excuses for our program. It was his opinion. If we go by your logic, Alice would have beat Gp last year. What? Our sub varsities didn't start jelling until the last two years. If it weren't for all the turnovers on special teams, that game would have been a different story. We did out gain y'all in total yards, but yes you guys won and that's all that counts. I am looking forward to this years game, when we come to your stadium. Btw, we beat Calallen, and y'all didn't LMAO. I expect a hard fought game by both sides this upcoming year. It will be entertaining!

I think I should clarify the original topic.
Let's get some specific examples -- i.e., one year our fish went 10-0, then when they were seniors they went 10-0. Or they stunk.

A freshman or JV team can go 10-0, yet when those same kids get on varsity, that doesn't translate into a 10-0 varsity team. The level of play and speed of the game is tremendously different. Sub-varsity success is great for your program, but doesn't translate into automatic success on the varsity level.

The answer to the question of this thread is "not much". How a school performs at the JV level has no bearing on how the team will perform on the varsity level. Again, this is total B.S. I realize that G.P.'s sub varsities weren't very good last year, and I think you are covering up for that. Face it, your sub varsities are your feeder programs. Now, In G.P'S defense, the kids had to learn a new offense and defense, so that could have a bearing on how the kids performed at the sub varsity levels. Only time will tell in the coming years how your team is going to do. I am not covering up for our sub-varsity teams. I could care less if both the JV & freshman teams went 0-10. That doesn't mean when those kids are on varsity (if they ever do), that they will be 0-10 as varsity players. Most of them may not even start if they get on varsity, so what difference does it make what their freshman or JV records were? Just like an undefeated freshman or JV team doesn't automatically translate into a 10-0 varsity program. Some kids don't even develop into bigger & stronger athletes until their junior or senior years.

The important thing is that the kids grow and develop in the program. IMO, you don't want the subvarsity teams going 1-9 just because kids will get sick of the losing and quit.

LMAO, yes that would be true if a team lost all of their starters and letterman from the varsity. I see your point though, if team a had a bunch of sophomores and juniors on their team last year vs. a team that had mostly J.V. players, then I could see your point.

I've always wondered how much of a correlation there is between success on subvarsity teams (JV, freshman, even middle school) and the varsity team down the road. It seems a lot of people make a big deal out of it, but I haven't seen any confirmation of it. I would think that in some programs, the players would see more growth after their freshman and sophomore years. Its very important, same coaching from the 7th grade up to the Varsity. Most larger schools don't have the luxury of having the young ones knowing whats going on when they reach high school. Refugios freshman play quite a few larger schools to be able to make a schedule and most of the time go undefeated.

Tom, that doesn't happen here in Alice. in 7th and 8th grade, we have three teams competing. The freshman and J.V. are split into two different teams to encourage the kids to stay in the program, and give the coaches a good look at what we have coming up the pipeline.

Our last senior class went 0-20 as 7th and 8th graders. As frfreshman they finally won a few games . Then they were JV kids till they were seniors for the most part. What Whitaker did an Excellent job of. Was keeping those kids together. Whilr they weren't overely talented. He developed them into good high school football players. They played key roles their senior year. He kept them out an involved. Sold them on his program and they went 10-1 as seniors.
If you develop your program properly. You can weather a less talented class. They worked very hard.

We field two 7th grade teams. Two 8th grade teams. Two freshman team. A sophmore team. And a JV. And a varisty.
Not bad for a school with an enrollment under1200

I am not sure if some people know the surrounding towns of Point Comfort ,Port O'conner and Seadrift go to high school at Calhoun....

However. They usually only field 1 football team and it consist of sixth graders due to numbers. They have some GOOd incoming freshman from seadrift. Daniels boy. A stafford and a canales I believe
