I HATE those screaming meanie scoreboards. I want to hear the bands and the crowds not some commercialized crap at a level that hurts your ears. Totally destroys the HS football atmosphere. Agreed... It's annoying to hear and see commercials in between quarters at an Alice football game.. rather hear the band, rather hear fb fans saying our crapper smells like camel urine..rather hear "It's another Coyote FIRST DOWN!!!" Between quarters? Hardly, at Weslaco where we are talking about they already run commercials between PLAYS. Sux big time.

Explain this: A new teacher in TMISD has an annual salary of 39556. TMISD is a distributor of Robin Hood monies. A new teacher in the Laredo ISD has an annual salary of 42700. LISD is a recepient of Robin Hood monies. Several school districts across the state whose livelihood has been its refineries were almost closed or close to bankrupt because of Robin Hood. The scoreboard thing - That's like the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, when Robert was down on his luck and couldn't pay bills. So Raymond lended him money and he took a trip with it. If I have to help pay for your kids education you don't get to wear a Rolex while I got a Timex. sounds to me like Laredo ISD is doing a better job of compensating their teachers for the hard work they do..... remember ultimately this will be paid by the business community with advertising dollars.... do they need it.....nope.... but does anybody need it.....probably not....and yet i didnt see this uproar when Katy's business community afforded them the opportunity to get that big ole scoreboard.....

Laredo ISD much like many of the border districts probably gets a good chunk of Federal Monies to supplement their teachers through things like Bi-lingual education programs, etc. Nothing wrong with that, just noting some of the different things that are available to help elevate teachers pay scalesin some areas vs others. Back on topic. I have a unique position from living inside the RGV bubble and now outside. I like the fact the RGV has made strides in the right direction. Don't get me wrong as I'm still proud to call it home. HOWEVER, it's things like this that was picked up by the Associated Press Wires and published in the Corpus paper and I be willing it made the Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News and Austin American Statesmen among others that serve some of the more wealthy school districts. It's stuff like this DESPITE the underlying issue about who or may not be paying for it in the community that gives those folks in Katy, Lake Travis, Highland Park, Frisco, etc the perfect talking point AGAINST trying to fix the school funding system. They will say "WTH are they coming for us for more our property tax dollars, when they have money to spend on things like a $1million scoreboard?" It's like someone going out and buying a $70,000 vehicle and then asking for a pay raise to help pay for it. Look at the quote I posted from the KRGV story above and it appears some of the school board members possibly get that. A better idea would be for the people behind this scoreboard would be to actually get the cash in hand via the sponsors and then pay for it WITHOUT the school having to make an obligation or having the booster club make the obligation with the scoreboard company. Right now it looks like the school would have to front the $1 million up front and then collect the balance from the sponsors over a ten year period. You have 10 sponsors, that is $100k over a ten year period and I don't care if you are a small or medium sized business, that's a sizeable cash draw on your budget. Using Katy is like comparing Apples with Oranges as they are a wealthy district and their business community probably consists of numerous large companies (IE corporate headquarters) within their boundaries or the Houston Metro area which have much more cash available for things like this.

I agree. Some will say, we'll they have them in college and you don't miss out on the game day environment. In College they only have a billion media timeouts and from attending several games, some school alternate timeouts between showing stuff on their JumboTrons and allowing the bands to play. But maybe we are old fashion CPA and FB Fan? We grew up when we started the game at mid field with a prayer followed by the national anthem. Now it's hard to even get some teams to line up properly for the national anthem.

Katy does not accept Robin Hood money. Robin Hood is based on the students in Weslaco deserve the same education that the students in Katy do. Therefore if Katy pre Robin Hood was spending 3000 dollars per student and Weslaco was spending 1000 dollars, the state got involved and pulled 1000 from Katy to give to Weslaco to make them both be spending 2000. However places like Katy and Highland Park were able to subsidize because of its affluent population. Places like Orange and Tuloso-Midway don't have the wealth in its population they have it in its industry. The way I see it - if you can pay for a stadium like Allen has. Great for you, as long as none of my Corpus Christi tax dollars are paying for it. It is ridiculous to have 5 refineries and have to play in the stadium TM plays in. When another school is taking money from another school district and plays in a brand new multi-million dollar stadium. And to top it off that district that is taking money from another school district has more money at the end of the day than a school district that has its money taken away from it. I could go on. But the administrators would have to pull this topic and move it the non-sports related topics.

STFF I should have relied on you and the like to make more sense than to rant like I did in the above reply.

Period.

I do not believe the average, tax paying citizen like you or I can make since of this..........but I'm sure the politicians that set BS like this up have a very, very viable explanation for it! Absolute HOG WASH is what I call it.

I don't think you quite get what he's saying. Why is a district that is getting money from another district able to pay their teachers more than the one who's providing the 'extra money' It is a very, very valid question. I call it hog wash because that is exactly what it is. If the state is going to mandate 'Robin Hood' type tax laws.....then shouldn't teacher's salaries be exactly even through the districts in the state???

Heres the fallacy in alot of what many of you are saying and STFF you can probably attest to this.....
The Valley is growing by leaps and bounds....faster then at any time ever....thats why you have all these new schools popping up......they are not getting more dollars from the rich schools they are getting more dollars based on their attendance has gone through the roof...
you guys act like the valley is spending foolishly when i would argue that for too long the school infrastructure down here was lacking big time....
in the last 20 years we probably have more new schools then we had for the past 100 years before that......
school districts like T-M are shrinking not growing.....and robin hood is a state mandated system....the valley is not the only area in the state getting robin hood dollars....in fact two school districts down here also give money back.....
you want to scream about dollars...take it up with the Repubs who cut 5 billion from education 2 years ago.....that would be where i would start.....
or take it up with the federal judge who deemed The Texas way of funding education as unconstitutional....

It is a fact the RGV is growing and that is a good thing, but would hate to see the fallout if ( more like when) Mexico's economy goes through hard times like it did a few times in the 80's and 90's. I recall one of those episodes where storefronts by the dozens in McAllen went out of business and was very similar to the oil bust which hurt the Coastal Bend in the mid 80's and shrank once 5A schools like Alice to 4A. While the growth is good, the RGV still needs to build up the other legs of it economic stool that doesn't rely mainly on retail/international trade from Mexico and government employment for which the later is unavoidable thanks to things like increased federal law enforcement. It's a fact a large number of the workforce in the RGV is employed by the government on the Federal, State and Local levels. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not good either as they are at the mercy of budget cutting or reorganization. They are making strides in the right direction by getting things like a full fledged medical school. But in my opinion, more focus should have been placed on manufacturing jobs and the such vs what some city leaders saw as important . It's a shame you are not closer to the Eagle Ford because its transforming the Coastal Bend economy to where we will sitting nice and pretty IF the EPA doesn't screw it up.
