Perceptions be damned I guess. The next time the Weslaco ISD goes to Austin claiming to be a "property poor" school district and asks for assistance via Robin Hood from a "rich" district, that greedy bastard of a school district should say "no" and tell the Weslaco ISD to go cash in your new toy for your needs.
I get that some of the money for these new video boards are raised from sponsors and the such. But this is beyond ridiculous in the day and age when all we hear in the media is how starved our school districts are from evil funding cuts last legislative session.

I'm sure a lot of the sponsor money came from people that run a very profitable business.

I live in a district where money is taken by the literal millions. Nothing is more frustrating knowing are school tax is going to another district, let alone for a items that are NOT needed for education. Calhoun has one of the worst stadiums around, can't afford to build a new one. Al thought the field is second to none. Hope this Robin Hood thing is over and the court system sides with the true victims of this political snafu!! Robin Hood sucks!! Should have never been allowed to become what it is. I understand there is a need for "distribution of funds" for poorer districts, but come on, this is 100% BS!!

I dont agree with any distribution of local tax money to other areas. My dollar should stay, here. My employers tax money should stay here to benefit our children.

Calallen is somewhere in the middle as is GP, Flour Bluff among others. TM I believe has to write checks thanks to Flint Hills, Citgo and a number of related companies being in their district. I think it's possible a few of us might move Up the ladder thanks to the oil filed growth and rising property values as many of us saw a rise last year. GP and Flour Bluff will get their faster thanks to the big plants being built in ISD and the Bluff not too far behind thanks to the Schliterbaun and relates business that will locate there in big numbers. I have nothing against school districts paying for stuff like this IF and only IF they got what's important paid for. Meaning they don't float bonds and then advertise if you vote for millions of dollars in bonds, the state will pick up a majority of the bill. Some of these school districts bond ratings suck, but because the have a state guarantee for a chunk of the debt, they get funded anyhow. And they float bonds over and over again without being questioned what the money is for. Look at Flour Bluff. They look at their modest bond issue as a big deal and I gather from the comments in the Caller, the board was real careful about it. Meaning they hadn't asked for one in decades. Same here a few years ago where something bigger could of passed, but it didn't feel right asking for the larger amount. And for the record, it's not just a valley thing. We have the same situation right in our back yard but with the money going into some school board members connections or something like that.

I dont think they need it....but there last school board was paid entirely with business advertising dollars.....and this one will be also.....
its a business decision for them and for the business' who choose to advertise on it....nothing more....
i have started seeing advertisements on school buses.....
every high school in texas has a scoreboard and if they can get somebody to pay for theirs....i would say they are making a better business decision then others are if they are paying for theirs.....

That stadium is the best one in the valley in my opinion. From the field, to the stands, the college style press box. I thought the scoreboard was just fine.. Go figure

Go figure I agree....but if the business community wants to invest their dollars on a bigger one and see their name advertised on it....then how is that a bad business decision.... if anything...weslaco is ahead of the curve....they are using the business community to pay for their bells and whistles instead of our tax dollars....what a novel idea....

It appears the WISD might be walking this back. Relevant quote here suggest even with sponsorships, the school district would have to shell out a major chunk of change. www.krgv.com/news/wisd-tables-scoreboard-proposalAfter some discussion, the board tabled the motion indefinitely. Some board members said the money would be better spent on security for students and repairs to the high school roof and air-conditioning system.Again, my issue is if you don't have the money for the basic stuff, don't go out and try to buy the Mercedes Benz or BMW's of scoreboards especially when you already have a Cadillac on premises that is paid for. And if you don't have a Cadillac, you might have to settle for Buick until you can afford more luxury.

I HATE those screaming meanie scoreboards. I want to hear the bands and the crowds not some commercialized crap at a level that hurts your ears. Totally destroys the HS football atmosphere.

It's annoying to hear and see commercials in between quarters at an Alice football game.. rather hear the band, rather hear fb fans saying our crapper smells like camel urine..rather hear "It's another Coyote FIRST DOWN!!!"

Explain this: A new teacher in TMISD has an annual salary of 39556. TMISD is a distributor of Robin Hood monies. A new teacher in the Laredo ISD has an annual salary of 42700. LISD is a recepient of Robin Hood monies. Several school districts across the state whose livelihood has been its refineries were almost closed or close to bankrupt because of Robin Hood. The scoreboard thing - That's like the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, when Robert was down on his luck and couldn't pay bills. So Raymond lended him money and he took a trip with it. If I have to help pay for your kids education you don't get to wear a Rolex while I got a Timex.
