First year in 5A. Football should be in a favorable district to make the playoffs, with likely matches against Alamo Heights and Pieper being the toughest tests. Got to go out and prove themselves again after an early upset exit this year.
Big if…does Hank Hendrix take over the QB position from Jaxon Baize? Jaxon reinjured the foot against LaVernia, but is rumored to play on the defensive side of the ball some next year. Interesting rumor for sure. I liked the improved mobility he showed running the ball later in the year, but that may have led to the injuries.
Adam Hicks will be standout RB1 with some good compliments coming up.
Brooks Perez who also left LaVernia with a back injury will figure to be one of the standout receivers in 5A. There are a few receivers that played well returning as well, plus some underclassmen that may surprise some people.
Most of the offensive line will be back as seniors and should be a strength again, hard to really improve too much as they were rock solid last year most of the time, but 5A defenses will bring more size and skill.
Defensively is where the Hounds will have to figure it out. 6-7 starters graduate this year by my count. Braden Bays and Hutson Hendrix will be studs again, and Carlos Requena really showed up on the D-Line later this season. Fielding a solid secondary to replace the 3/4 seniors there will be a challenge.
Without seeing a schedule or District yet, I think this team goes 8-2 in the regular season and if they finish top 2 in their district, they’ll go 3 rounds or better.

How do you figure this? They now have to play real competition for the most part.

Alamo Heights, Tivy and SA Vets would be real competition compared to last year. South SA squads in the 5A-2 range are like Somerset at best. Didn’t say “win district” just said make playoffs. 4 teams go…

I think they’ll do good. Boerne looked closer to a 5a squad the last couple of years than a 4a. With the growth in that area, solid coaching and talented kids will keep them rolling.

Pieper is going 5A-1, so they wouldn't be on your District schedule.

Word on the street is they will be playing in pre district. That’s why I included them in likely matches. I could have worded it different to avoid confusion.

Where did i say that? I am saying they won't have it near as easy as they did the last two years playing 4a1 with 5aII enrollment. They may make the playoffs again, but it's not a gimme as the previous 2 years.

One thing is certain, it’ll take a damn good team to knock off the upper echelons of 5A-2 with PNG and SOC up there. Some good squads in CC Miller, Alamo Heights and such will be all 5A-2 this year too. But Boerne has held their own against 5A squads the last few years so even though it won’t be a starters pulled at half time cakewalk in district, I still think 8-2 or 9-1 is likely. AH will be the class of 5A-2 in San Antonio until someone overtakes them.

The good teams in 4a D1 can beat a huge percentage of the 5a D2 teams and the best in 4a D1 can beat all but a select few 5a D2 teams. This past year's Boerne team would have beaten all but 3 or so of the 5a D2 teams in R4. The 2022 team was good enough in the playoffs to possibly win R4 in 5a D1. That team against LH would have been quite a ball game. AH will indeed be the 5a D2 team to beat in the SA area this coming season with what they bring back, especially offensively.

Haven’t seen a schedule yet, curious to know who else besides Pieper on the road week one? There are three other non-district games to fill out. Hope the trip to Victoria West waits one more year😂

I noticed this morning that McCoy Bruce had turned down a few college offers to sign on with the UT Longhorns as a preferred walk on. It will interesting to see his development in Sarks program.

Yeah that was a shocker. He’s fast and has good ball skills as a DB, but I don’t see him matching up with any Power 4 starting wideouts.

Hopefully he stays healthy and can compete. Some kids it works out for and others it doesn't. It will definitely takes some mental toughness no doubt.
