My preseason forecast for D13-5A-1: 1. Smithson Valley – they have lost 1 district game in the 4 years they have played below 6A (at the 5A level) 2. Pieper – Tough choice between them and Wagner, this assumes they find a QB close to last year’s set. 3. Wagner – They showed how important the QB was last year when they had to play their 4th string toward the end of the year, and were still a tough out 4. New Braunfels – This is partially due to the program that Coach Mangold had established which provided a good pipeline of players. Only return 18 lettermen! 5. Victoria East – A young QB with experience and a relatively large number of returning starters make them a threat. 6. Boerne Champion – A good program who has to replace a lot of skill position players. 7. Seguin – Scoring has not been the problem for the Matadors, and shouldn’t be this year with a returning QB and a ton of speed – but they have gotten worse every year on defense, they need to learn how to stop someone. 8. MacArthur – a handful of returning starters, a QB with some experience, but no depth to speak of and very little recent experience with success.

Agree with your 1-4 but think that 2-4 probably are interchangeable. I'd have BC as the #5 right now and VE #6. Gonna be a damn good district with some fantastic ball games!

Have some thoughts on the New Braunfels vs Boerne scrimmage.
First off: they got rid of the wooden “Little House on the Prairie” bleachers on the visitors side of BISD Stadium! Their new visitors side is essentially a carbon copy of the visitors side of Lehnhoff Stadium; a small set of central aluminum grandstands with two sets of mini bleachers on each side. It’s not anything fancy, but it’s now modern and up to date (my only gripe with that stadium). There is room to expand the central grandstands higher if they so choose in the future. Probably seats around 2,000 people. Good job Boerne ISD.
As for the scrimmage, I only have a handful of thoughts which have some concerns, but being that it’s early, I’ll stay observant. Boerne looked more sharp than New Braunfels, specifically on offense. Greyhounds will be a good passing team. Unicorn D had a handful of picks which is reason to be hopeful, but were vulnerable to passing as well. Offensive output was limited, but there was more success on the run. Unfortunately, a few RB that I was hoping would carry NB into the future are now at Long Creek. And QB Namkin appeared to not play, for reasons not related to neither health nor discipline, so we will have to wait to see what happens there. NB is a bit vulnerable on O line, which will affect whoever is at QB regardless.
There was a varsity timed quarter where Boerne came out ahead of New Braunfels 14-7. All things considered, NB has tools to work with. Boerne will do great this season. New Braunfels hosts 6A Dripping Springs next week in their 2nd scrimmage.
I also caught the subvarsity scrimmages, and Long Creek’s opening took a bigger toll there. A gap between Boerne and New Braunfels is apparent, so I’m curious what types of improvements NB will make, as the Greyhounds seems to outperform more.

BandidoNB - I'm curious about what the NB offensive and defensive systems looked like in comparison to previous years under Mangold - did you pick up on any major changes?

No major changes that really stuck out to me so far. And again, we didn’t to see our QB in action either. My earlier comment about NB being more of a ground team now actually started under Mangold though, so there’s that. At this time, I still consider Smithson Valley far and away the district favorite. In wouldn’t pencil in NB any higher than 4th in the district race at this time. But that can always change given any mid season adjustments. NB really swung upwards late in 2022, and not so much in 2023. New coach now for the first time in around 10 years. New expectations.

Especially in the 1st of 2 scrimmages. I wouldn't read a whole lot into him not playing.

My newly established opinion is never play your clear cut starting qb in a scrimmage… We (Weiss) just lost ours for the season yesterday. Not what I wanted to see happen at all.

Wow that’s absolutely awful! Hope it doesn’t send their season into a tail spin. Weiss was a tough tough team the last few years.

Unicorns looked a bit more composed in their final scrimmage vs 6A Dripping Springs. Defense, as usual, is a bit ahead of the offense at this point of the season. Tigers were all over the field in the controlled scrimmage. I thought it was going to unravel similarly to Boerne.
New Braunfels and Dripping Springs dueled to a 0-0 draw in the timed period. Unicorns saved a final Tigers drive by intercepting to end the period. Great job Unicorns! They recorded several of those last week. Good for the defense.
Now it’s time for Week 1.

That's encouraging - Drip is supposed to be good again this year. On to Madison...

Here is what I have for the D13-5A-1 Schedule next week:
Thurs, 8/29: SV @ SA Roosevelt (Comalander) 7p Boerne @ Pieper 7p
Fri, 8/30: United South @ Boerne Champion 7p Alamo Heights @ Seguin 7p Victoria East @ Georgetown 7 p MX Football Club @ Wagner (Rutledge) 7:30p New Braunfels @ Madison (Comalander) 7:30p
Sat, 8/1 MacArthur @ Lee (Heroes) 7p
A lot of interesting matchups, I am especially interested in the Boerne/Pieper matchup. I would think SV, Pieper, BC, Wagner and NB would be considered favorites, but only the Wagner game could be considered an easy one. Can't wait to get this thing started!
