He was the offensive coordinator. Beat Permian 6 of the 10 years he was there. I think that was one of the attractions in getting him from a comment I remember. Yup. When I first met Whatley when he got here, I thought he was dumber than a box of rocks🤣. I was thinking to myself wtf was Herrera thinking. Speaking of Spike Dykes, he was the HC in Alice in 1970 and 71.

Fact Coach Spike Dykes was in Alice the two years he was there My senior season was his first. For sure hurt us that he was hired literally just weeks before the start of 2 a days. We wasted the first couple of days of practice too because we were running the Wishbone. When he realized we only had 1 good RB and a bunch of good receivers he switched it up to pro-set as our main go-to formation but we were always in multiple formations. Mostly the run and shoot actually. Every once in awhile we threw in some wishbone and other formations still though. Our senior season was a tough pill to swallow. Lost to the 1st place team by a TD, lost to the 2nd place team by 1 point, lost to the 3rd place team by 3 points. It was such a tough district also. We were still 5A in the biggest classification with only a 1600 enrollment. CC Ray who finished 7th in our district that season beat Calallen in a non-district game. Victoria High didn't even make the playoffs and they were loaded.

I bet the short timing of Whatley getting hire did hurt some after Herring left like y’all never had enough time to learn Whatley’s system & y’all had lost that QB to graduation from the 90 season. The short losses was definitely the tough pill to swallow. King, Carroll & Miller were the toughs that season …. Tough breaks

We had the district's #1 Passer, #1 RB, #1 WR (i was #4), the best Tight End and it wasn't enough. It was just a very good district plus us getting Whatley in very late that hurt us.

Never liked Herring. He was an egotistical jackass, and I lost all respect for him to move on as late as he did. It was a dikc move, no matter the situation.

I remember the QB that started in the year you play was the Free Safety on that 90 team when y’all went to battle with Koy Detmer & the Mission team in the playoffs, I know y’all played them twice that year. Y’all had the weapons that season of 1991 & the late timing of hiring Whatley did hurt bad

I have Herring on my list for “Most Disgraceful People Of Alice” …. Total waste

Under Atwood will Alice ever have a running game vs legit opponents? Has it ever even been pointed out how our running game is non-existent vs the good programs? We ran for absolutely nothing this season vs Vets and Calallen and it's like that every season vs the elites of the elite around here.

There's a Cutter Stewart article on Friday Night Fever on Facebook. The 2 main things I took from it are he absolutely did have a torn ACL this season and he even mentions it. That dude's dad spent all season lying to me that it was just a bruise. I'm not so offended that he kept lying to me though because I'm not stupid enough to have believed it as much as someone is stupid enough to try and push that lie while the player's other family members were telling everyone it was indeed a torn ACL. The second thing I took out of the interview is that I dislike Atwood even more now that the injury is all confirmed. You lost 2 QBs over this chit. For what? You're telling me a 50% completion passer who can't run and is stationary in 1 spot because of the torn ACL was better than what Alice had before? Atwood put his loyalty to this family over his loyalty to the program and for that I have lost the even just 1% of respect I still had for him.
