How did Miller/Ingleside scrimmage turn out. I saw a comment say 5-1 Miller but I have no idea if that was all of it or only the 1st team points. If they played a shortened 2nd scrimmage like Alice and Ray did that could be the total. I don't know though. From another poster from Ingleside in different forum: I left wih a couple minutes left. Miller 3-1. Miller (5A Div 2) is big and fast. Wore Ingleside out. Offense kept it conservative. Mostly running plays. Scoring drive was a long pass and run . Short passing game sucked. Defense looked pretty good. Miller has four Div. 1 receivers. Ingleside shut down their long passing game. Did a good job against their running game. Miller made a lot of their yardage with short passes. I think we will be competitive.

Dang, this post is making STB look like Nostradamus! If Miller can’t just throw prayers up and hope their guy catches it against the better d backs… well they are in trouble.

Well whenever he left he missed 2 Miller touchdowns. He's admitting the Miller offense kept it conservative but claiming they shut down the Miller long ball. Or is he making the excuse that Ingleside kept it conservative? I don't understand most of what that comment says.

Nobody seems to agree on what happened and apparently nobody saw it I'll go by the rankings (Ingleside at #20) and just say they may be pretty good.

Wait, so 1s on 1s PLC was 3-0? From what I saw it was a tie at 0 the first time the 1s went out ....when the 2s came out Hallestville scored once ... the 1s came out again Hallettsville didn't score and Calhoun scored twice and scored again when I was walking out of the stadium .... Looks like Calhoun lost another one of its returning starters on Defense with a leg injury in the Hallestville scrimmage. Sandcrabs score 4 times in scrimmage The Sandcrabs wrapped up their second and final scrimmage of the pre-season Friday night in front of the home fans. While the offense and defense both had standout moments in the glorified practice, Calhoun suffered another lost starter when senior defensive end David Perez suffered a broken leg. The injury comes after starting fullback Aaron Martinez was lost for a big chunk of the season to a broken leg in the team’s intraquad scrimmage Aug. 6. Both players could return at some point near mid-season, but in the meantime, younger, more inexperienced Sandcrabs will be asked to step into significant roles. “It’s another traumatic loss for our football program,” he said. “Very sorry for David and hope that he can get back and play for us sometime this season. He’s a senior, great kid who’s worked his tail off this year and was playing solid, solid football for us. This was a position that we were already thin at. Losing him and losing Aaron were two huge, huge losses for us. Some young kids are going to have to step up. But we hope for fast healing for David.” Defensively, the Sandcrabs played well throughout the scrimmage. The first team did not give up a scoring drive all night, punctuated by a goal-line stand where Hallettsville was denied the end zone on four tries. “They got down inside our five and the defense bowed their necks and kept them out,” Whitaker said. “I thought that’s a deal that can build a lot of confidence for our defense. We gave up some plays here and there, but down in the red zone, we played really well. I was pleased with getting a shutout from our first teamers.” In addition to the big plays, there were a couple of missed opportunities in the passing game that Whitaker said the team will have to hit once the regular season begins. One of the plays was a 95-yard TD burst from senior slotback Tony Hensley, who turned the corner on a well-blocked play and displayed his track speed. “We have illusions of plays, the idea on this one is to freeze the linebackers and also the safety,” Whitaker said. “It started with us running a play where it looked like the ball was going to our fullback. Then the right side of the line did a good job of double teaming. Then the backside guard, Damian Guzman, is pulling on the play to secure the edge. Jayce (Campos) did a great job of turning the corner, then at the last second pitching out to Tony on the edge. Bradley Thomas hit the safety and Derric Salinas hit the cornerback on a switch block. It wasn’t perfect, but we did a good enough job of getting Tony into the open field, where he’s very dynamic.” Offensively, the Sandcrabs had a total of four scoring drives during the contest. “One of the things that was disappointing was I didn’t think we sustained any drives,” Whitaker said. “We had some explosive plays, but didn’t have any of those 14 or 15 play drives that this offense thrives on. We didn’t have a lot of first downs. That’s kind of what we hang our hat on, getting first downs and chewing up that clock. But as each week goes on, we find more positives, and we also find more things to fuss about and to work on. Hopefully after watching the film, the kids can see the things they need to correct and get us ready for the district opener, which is coming up in about six weeks.”

Sandcrabs to face top 20 team in Stafford to begin year
The Sandcrabs will open the 2022 gridiron season against a familiar foe, on the road against the Spartans of Stafford.
Calhoun took down SHS last season at home in a hard-fought 21-14 game.
Sandcrabs Head Coach Richard Whitaker foresees another neck-and-neck affair this season against a squad of experienced and talented Spartans.
“They are athletic and have a ton of kids back from a really good team that made a run in the playoffs last year,” Whitaker said. “They have a good team and it will be a big test for us to start the season.”
The Spartans have 14 returning starters, are ranked in the Top 20 of 4A in the pre-season and are slated to finish second in their district being a loaded El Campo team.
Stafford’s offense is powered by a pair of returning running backs that offer a thunder and lightning approach.
Tailback Jamaal Wiley (5-11, 220) runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, but also runs with a powerful style that makes him hard to tackle. Running back Terrence Woods (5-6, 165) is “more of a scatback,” Whitaker said, offering the elusive lightning aspect of the duo.
QB Brayden Batiste (6-0, 190) is a threat to run or pass.
“They have the best 1-2 punch in the backfield that we’ll probably see all year long,” Whitaker said. “They have one kid who is 220 pounds and is a top sprinter in their area. Big, strong, physical kid, this is his third year on varsity. The other kid reminds me of the guy from Hallettsville. He is a little scatback. Stops on a dime and makes great cutbacks. The QB is a 3-year starter and all their top receivers are back from last year. So offensively, they had to rebuild their line, but their skill kids are as good as it gets.”
Defensively, the Spartans also return a ton of talent from a crew that limited Calhoun in last year’s contest.
“Their defense was so stingy last year,” he said. “We scored three times last year and a lot of their guys are back.”
Whitaker said having a relatively young football team, the regimented schedule of a road game may be advantageous to open the season.
“This might sound crazy, but with our inexperienced team, I would rather be on the road,” he said. “It seems like maybe getting out of school early, getting on the bus, getting away from all the distractions, it seems to calm kids and get them more focused. Sometimes when you’re at home, a full school day, a lot things going on in their heads, sometimes they have other things on their minds. So I don’t mind their first game being on the road.”
Whitaker said keys to the game will be having sustained drives on offense, shortening the game and avoiding mistakes like turnovers and penalties.
“With a tough defense and some very dangerous skill kids, it’s going to be a great challenge for the Sandcrabs on Friday night,” he said. “We’re going to have a lot of young kids playing for the first time under the Friday Night Lights. Hopefully they can handle the situation, handle the adversity and see if we can come out with a W. We need to prepare well this week.”
