I suspect GP will be ranked 5th or 6th in district next year. They have Flour Bluff and Veterans Memorial for starters and possibly Ray at the top. Then you have VE and VW and I don't know how good they will be. Supposedly GP has a freshman QB that will be a soph. They have Gage Gleinig and Devon Mauch returning at QB. They have Kaleem Gholsby and Dustin Madsen at RB. They have about 20 juniors returning. Isiah Chandler will be back at Wide receiver. His injury was expensive. GP might have made the Basketball playoffs if Isiah was able to play. He tried to make a arm tackle in open field on a big RB going full speed and it spun him like a top but his foot did not spin. He is a tall good looking kid with bones I can reach around with my fingers. He has no business playing defense. Now the facts. Coach Anastacio took over a losing program that may have won district one time in the last ten years. Coach Anastacio did make the playoffs. Coach Rhodes is in his 5th year of a losing program that has not made the playoffs the last 4 years. Attitude,Attitude, it is all about attitude. When Coach Whitaker took over a losing program at PLC, he changed their attitude. GP is going to get a attitude check the first game out of the box.

I suspect your right 37, since it’s apparent lately on Facebook. I have seen over the last year on the GP ISD acct on FB, the administration pushing outstanding teachers and academic success at GP. On the other hand I have not seen a single word on athletics at GP. Dr Clore’s contract must be coming up because it seems he’s brown nosing up to his base. I’ve been around some very good programs both academically and athletically and it’s most apparent that he has sold out the athletic programs. The school board still pushes for work on facilities and because GP is currently flush with industry tax money they get approved. As long as Clore is the Supt at GP do not expect him to really support our athletic programs. Rhoades will be Gone after this season and they will hire a sub par coach to replace him.

I have been going to the Baptist Church basketball for years and will be there this Sat to watch my great grand daughter play and those kids grow up and GP still does not have a decent basket ball team to make the playoffs. My great grand daughter may play in 3 or 4 sports and she will be 6 ft. tall before she grads grade school. I saw a girl taller than my gr.grand daughter at her musical last night. MY great grand daughter plays mostly against boys. She can hit three pointers and she is getting better at blocking shots and getting rebounds. Her favorite is flag football and her dad played football at GP. I am going to be hard to get along with the coaches when she gets to middle school. She has yet to play Volleyball but she is interested. I am seeing other 4th graders that are super basketball players. They just seem to disappear later on.

That’s exactly what I mean, GP has had gifted athletes leave because they have failed to build strong sports programs at GP. I don’t blame the kids who only want to be successful. I blame the administration because for years they have failed to adequately support the HC. A lot of damage has already been done and there’s no quick fix. My kids have all graduated from GP so I doesn’t effect me. I just feel sorry for the athletes who work hard to have success and the admins don’t give a damn.

I’m not sure why y’all think admin does not care about athletics at GP. We have terrific facilities. They paid big bucks for a top notch coach. They can’t control entitled kids/parents.

I think the adm cares about athletics, they just care more about politics and hiring retreads with family at GP. GP has better athletes setting in study hall than a lot of schools have on the field. I have great grand kids coming up and one is playing soccer this morning and another playing basketball at noon and I am disturbed that this adm. does not have a winning attitude.

Yes GP has good facilities now thanks to school board members who still care about Athletics and new industry generating the tax money. I also noticed GP junior high will be getting its own turf football field and track. There are not that many schools especially in the coastal bend that a jr High has its own facility. John, I find it hard to believe that Rick came to GP just for the extra retirement money. I’ve heard all the excuses about lack of size and talent at GP. I do know early on Rick requested to replace certain coaches and he was told no by the admins. Their excuse, they are good teachers. I’ve seen good athletes move on to other school districts or just quit athletics. How many of the original 3 coaches who came to GP are still at GP? None, even his son left GP. It’s more than apparent that no HC/AD no matter the pay, can build a successful program with the ground rules imposed by this administration. GP has set a record I never thought I would see. Football players, athletic staff and trainers attended and played 4 yrs and never got to play a playoff game. Who’s to blame for that?

I think someone grossly mislead Coach Rhoades about GP before he took this job and I think we know who it was. Coach Rhoades has a tiger by the tail and can't turn it loose.

So GP went out and spent big bucks on a coach that was proven and he was allowed to be bring 3 with him? I'd say that is pretty damn good when you compare it to what I've witnessed closer to home when we hire HCs from within when there are far more qualified people from outside that applied for those jobs! This is not college where you hire a new HC and he basically has damn near an 'open checking account' to bring in the Coordinators and assistants he wants. If your admin spent the money to hire a coach that has won titles and allowed him to bring 3 with him I'd say that GP is way ahead of that curve.

Of course it takes a village to either destroy a program or build one. Number one is the leadership which must come from the administration. At Gp the admin along with the school board is in the process of building new facilities as well as new schools. The admins and board are doing a admirable job as far as facilities.
The HC/AD, after Matt Anastacio”s short stay at GP, the admins and board stepped up and hired Rick Rhoades. A lot of us thought finally GP had come to its senses and hired a great successful coach that would bring in the coaches he needs to turn the program around. Rick brought 2 coaches and his son Jack as a 1st year coach. Almost from the start Rick started facing opposition from the admins and one of Ricks coaches lasted 1 yr before he left thecoching profession the other coach lasted 3 yrs before he left to take a coaching job at another ISD. After only 3 yrs only Rick and Jack remained from the original group. The coaching staff at GP has basically not changed other than a few position coaches has remained the same. I have to ask why go through all the trouble of bringing in a good veteran coach ,a couple position coaches and not allow him the latitude to manage the program the way he needs to be successful?
The community at GP, GP is and always been a sports minded community. The City has also spent millions to transform two parks into sports venues that consists of baseball and softball fields and a turf peewee football field. The city has invested over the years in the soccer programs which have performed well over the years.
As far as facilities GP has provided its athletes very good facilities They went out and hired a top notch coach and paid him in the top 5% pay in 5A football. All of this and not one single football playoff game in 4 years. The system at GP is broken and needs to be fixed. The school district needs to form a committee of school and community leaders to audit and investigate what needs to change at GP ISD. Currently our tax dollars are being invested that looks pretty but is failing to provide our athletes with the opportunity to be successful in all sports.

It has been nearly 20 years ago when GP fan John Ahlers R.I.P. went before the GPISD School Board to complain about the direction of GP athletics. John was barred from Coach George Harris office. John was a Miller grad and pretty knowledgeable about football. GP coaching staff was made up of friends of Coach Harris. We have posters on here that feel GP had a winning program. One district title in 10 years and winning against weak teams is a winning program? This became the new normal at GP. Coach Anastacio came in and could not fire a coach but made the job of several coaches life miserable and they retired. Slackers quit the team and numbers dropped. Talent had dried up however Coach Anastacio was able to make the playoffs and in his fifth year as his 4th QB to try was in the playoffs with a 5ft 9in QB with small hands and only passed in desperation. No WR with hands or speed and a 210 lb lineman was huge. Eric White was a super athlete in a small package. Players fought with super effort until the whistle. A coach at VW breathed a sigh of relief when the whistle blew because his larger and more talented team was out of gas and GP was still coming. I suspect Coach Rhoades is lame duck toast and going to be interesting how many fans show next season. I saw a fan near me get up and walk out the gate this last year when GP had 280 pounders getting shoved around like Card board. Coach Anastacio made the playoffs with a bunch of 165 pounders giving maximum effort. GP athletics has sunk overall and neither basket ball team made the playoffs. GP would need a consultant to come in that is independent of the school board, GPISD and research what has been going on and make recommendations. GPISD wants another bond passed to have more money to throw into the education money disposal. Education at GP is about as bad as athletics. You may see a boycott of GP football games next year.
