It was shady that everyone submitted names and they ended up choosing his, but that's what you get for naming schools after people, which I think is kinda dumb. Maybe Elementary schools, but not at the secondary level. Yeah, I read a lot of the comments. People were pissed that they asked for input from the community but totally ignored the community and picked their own name. LOL It's all a facade. Then, IIRC, they said they can't change the name because it's already being put up on the school. Something to that effect. I wonder if this blows over or if it will eventually affect their standing on the school board. Haha.

We had a similar situation with an Elementary school. The community was asked for feedback and the board went with Robert L. Puster Elementary School. That's right, kids went to Puster. Other two Elementary schools are named Joe V. Hart and Carrie Lovejoy. Hmmm, Hart, Lovejoy and Puster - one of these things is not like the others...

Frisco Lebanon Trail announced its mascot last week. Students chose Blazers over Lynx, Longhorns, and Wranglers. Lebanon Trail Blazers. Ha. Colors are green and gold, so that would make for a cool dragon logo, if they use a dragon. EDIT - Nevermind, they went with a horse. Cool logo though. /photo/1 Wow! A Frisco High student created the logo. Cool. lthspride.com/2016/02/24/portrait-of-the-artist-lths-logo-and-mascot-design/

Northside Harlan will open in 2017 to 1600 kids in grades 9-11. They'll be 5A for one cycle, then probably move up.

Not a new school, but Anna High School should have 5A numbers no later than the 2020-21 school year. This means that Anna will be 5A in either Fall 2020 or 2022. Anna ISD projects 4 HS at build-out, each with clean feeder patterns all the way through (16 ES feed into 8 MS into 4 HS) and max capacities of 2000 students each. Considering Anna ISD covers all of Anna and most of its ETJ, and Anna having a 146,000 build-out population, that figure sounds about right. Early naming suggestions are Westminster HS (the former WHS was had colors of maroon and gold and were the Trojans… I don't like that mascot, but it would be cool to bring that all back) for the far east side of the district (formerly the city of Westminster). Let's call them the Warriors and I'm down with it. If they have to have a dog theme, then Wolves would make sense. HS #3, for the south central portion of the district, should be called Highland, after the former community that was in that area. Highland residents packed up and moved to Anna when it was just getting going. Huskies would keep with the dog-like naming system. HS #4 for everything west of US75, name it Kelly HS after the former community in the area. Kelly Green, Silver, and White would be great colors. Wolves, Lobos, Jackals, Dingos, Wild Dogs, or Bear Dogs are some dog-themed suggestions. I say Lobos. So the 4 HS would be: Anna Coyotes (Purple, Gray, White) Westminster Warriors (Maroon, Yellow Gold, and White) Highland Huskies (Orange, Gray, White) Kelly Lobos (Kelly Green, Gray, White) With Van Alstyne (Blue), Celina (Orange), Melissa (Red), and Blue Ridge (Green) surrounding Anna, I think it's best to stay away from those colors. Since Anna is Purple and VA and Melissa are really close, I think it's better to stick with secondary colors on the color wheel (Purple, Green, Orange). Westminster can be the outlier of the dog theme, gray theme, and secondary color scheme since it actually has its own history. Also, the school with green is located on the opposite side of the district as Blue Ridge and the school with Orange will have at least 2-5 schools in between it and Celina High. Just my suggestions!

Good stuff out of Belton. The board approved the plan for HS #2, which will go to vote in 2017 for an opening in 2021. HS #2, like all Belton schools, would have colors of Red and White and keep the same mascot, the Tigers. They are hoping this will keep the community happy and allow for the bond to pass. With BHS's current enrollment of 3200, and there are expected to be over 4000 HS students by 2025. At least one of the two HS's would be 5A, but both could, by that time. It all depends on how they split it up. www.tdtnews.com/news/article_ec6ba89c-05d9-11e6-8698-77ab8e8ce6c5.html

Maybe so, but I've understood it as they want to stay at 4 for a long time. Maybe they will add on someday a la what McKinney ISD did to prevent a 4th HS. I can understand some of the logistics, but wouldn't you want to give each school the best chance to succeed, even if it is for only 2 years? And don't forget, High and Ryan currently have FUNKY attendance zones, so it's not like Guyer could be any worse. My question is, aside from east on 380, where is Denton's growth at? Oops. I forgot DISD expects the need of 6-7 HS at build out. So the 6-7 HS was with enrollments of 2200. Guyer will soon be expanded to 3000 and Braswell is built to expand to 3000 as well. With Denton High being built in 1957, you have to think it will need to be replaced soon. If not, they could leave its enrollment intact or build a 9th grade center somewhere close-by. No plans, just pure speculation. With an expected build-out population of over 14,000 HS students, only 5 HS would be needed if the 3000 capacity was used.

Denton High can't really be expanded because it's surrounded by an established neighborhood. But the school was renovated in, I think, the 1990s. At the time when Ryan was built, it was initially intended to be a new campus for DHS with the old Denton High campus converted to a 9th grade center -- I'm not sure why they changed their minds about it, maybe they figured they would ultimately need more than one high school either way? But, the location of both DHS and Ryan, and the fact that DHS is surrounded by neighborhoods that have been converted to student housing (not "officially" student housing per se, but a lot of those homes are just rented out to UNT/TWU students) means that you could probably get away with having DHS serve most of Denton proper at current capacity and have Ryan pick up whatever is over DHS's capacity, then build a fifth HS for the outlying areas.

Ok update on San Antonio Veterans Memorial; it looks like it will open with 9-10 this year and not play varsity ball until next realignment.

Ok update on San Antonio Veterans Memorial; it looks like it will open with 9-10 this year and not play varsity ball until next realignment. Whoa! I didn't know they finally gave in and changed the name! Threw me off. Haha. My opinion: Mackey was a unique name; VM is just another fad name. (I understand the reasoning though.) And, yes, I see that it will have 450 9th-10th graders this year.
