Aledo claims another softball state title By Brian Gosset bgosset@star-telegram.com AUSTIN — UIL history was already made when Aledo softball became the first Class 4A/5A team to make it to Austin three consecutive years. On Saturday, the Bearcats made more history by becoming the eighth school to repeat as state softball champions after a 3-2 victory over Cedar Park Vista Ridge in the 5A state final at McCombs Field. Aledo (23-1) led 3-0 before Vista Ridge (29-3-1) made a push in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Maya Benologa singled in a run, then the Rangers had two on and the tying run at first base. Vista Ridge’s Elizabeth Svienty blooped a single over Allie Arneson at shortstop to make it 3-2. Left fielder Kadyn Kirkpatrick noticed the pinch runner at first rounding second base and threw to Riley Sartain at third for the final out. “I knew I had to get the ball in — that runner, I don’t know why she went, but as soon as she did, I had to make that play,” Kirkpatrick said. “I knew if I threw the ball to Riley, she would make the tag, so when I threw it I realized we won and ran for the dog pile.” “It’s true what they say: Offense wins games, but defense wins championships,” Sartain added. Aledo’s Lauren Craine (22-1) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five on her way to title-game Most Valuable Player. “It’s an awesome feeling, I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s really great to go out like this,” Craine said. Aledo struck quickly on Sartain’s two-run home run to left in the first inning, her sixth of the season. In the sixth, Aledo’s Landri Mays singled to right and Ashton Adkins scored from second after the right fielder couldn’t field the ball cleanly. Aledo led 3-0. “That run was big — Landri driving it in. Nobody in the world works harder than her,” Aledo coach Jeff Lemons said. It’s the Bearcats’ third title in program history, which includes a 2008 championship. “Everybody made some type of play. Even if it doesn’t show up in the scorebook, everyone contributed,” Lemons said. After six years, Lemons is stepping down as softball coach to spend more time with family and to coach golf at Aledo. www.dfw.com/2015/06/06/1002464/aledo-softball-state-title.html

Aledo softball coach moving on after back-to-back state titles By Brian Gosset bgosset@star-telegram.com Aledo softball coach Jeff Lemons is going out on top. After the Bearcats won their second straight UIL state title, he announced that he was relinquishing softball duties to become the golf coach. “I love all the kids to death,” said Lemons, who led the program for six seasons. “My daughter and son are getting older, so it’s time for me to spend more time with them.” Senior pitcher Lauren Craine added: “He has been so encouraging and has given me the opportunity to grow as a pitcher. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to play for him.” Lemons took over for Kevin Cook following the Bearcats’ 2008 state title campaign and never looked back — winning five district titles and almost 76 percent of his games (151-49) in six seasons. “Jeff came in for an interview, and he was exactly what I was looking for,” Aledo athletic director Tim Buchanan said. “Good disciplinary and great teacher — he takes the kids and works with them with a great off-season program.” But Lemons’ legacy was made the past three years, leading the Bearcats to three consecutive state appearances and back-to-back state titles — becoming the eighth school to repeat and joining Crowley (2003-04) as the only two area teams to accomplish that feat. “Graduating with three state medals around my neck is something I never thought I would do,” senior catcher Alli Ramsey said. “Coach Lemons has been such a wonderful coach over the past four years, and I can’t wait to see what he does coaching the golf team next year.” This season had its rough patches, including starting the year without a non-district schedule due to inclement weather. Then the Bearcats’ 44-game winning streak was snapped in a Game 1 loss to Canyon in the regional semifinal, but Aledo recovered to win two straight and advance. “The loss to Canyon was a bit of a shock to the team, but it made us remember what it felt like to lose,” Ramsey said. “And we knew we wouldn’t want that feeling again.” Senior shortstop Allie Arneson added: “Losing against Canyon honestly helped us, just made us stronger mentally.” Finally at state, Aledo had leads before surviving late-game rallies. “They handled the stress to win games,” Buchanan said. “Having so many seniors helped tremendously. They showed a lot of maturity, and Jeff did an awesome job.” Lemons’ state teams went 96-9 overall and 30-2 in postseason play over that three-year span. Craine, Arneson, Ramsey, junior outfielder Kadyn Kirkpatrick and senior third baseman Riley Sartain represented Aledo on the UIL State 5A All-Tournament team, with Craine and Arneson also named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A All-State team. “This championship meant a lot to me because I played every game for my seniors and coach,” Kirkpatrick said. “Coach Lemons has been the best coach I could have asked for throughout the past three years.” Senior outfielder Ashton Adkins added: “Lemons has so much love and passion for the game. You won’t find many coaches who love the game as much as him.” Said Buchanan: “It will be hard to find a replacement for Jeff.” www.dfw.com/2015/06/09/1003525/aledo-softball-coach-moving-on.html

ICYMI...
4A Softball State Championship game:
Needville vs. Huffman Hargrave
Watch what the Needville Catcher does... The Ump made no call. smh...
Karma is good as Huffman Hargrave won the 4A State Championship.
"The video above -which has been making its rounds online- was filmed during the UIL 4A state softball title game between Huffman Hargrave and Needville.
Huffman won 6-4, but attention has been placed on the Needville catcher, whose elbow causes two Huffman runners to go flying as they advance from third to home.
It begs the question: with no play at the plate, was the catcher elbowing the runners intentionally? Should she have been ejected?
No matter the answers to those questions, it’s never good to see unnecessary collisions occur."

She needs more than ejecting. She needs as ass kicking. What was the umpire thinking?

The first time you look at that player and are upset but you let it slide. Like maybe it wasn't intentional. Second time you know it was intentional and dirty. No play at the plate and you are right on it? Come on now. I seriously thought that second girl was going to go after the catcher. I understand it's state and you don't wanna get kicked out of the game but geez.

Congrats to the Aledo girls. Heck of a job to go back to back!
Yeah, I saw the 'low lights' of that Needville catcher's actions. Wow........Just WOW!

Yes, A very dirty play, Twice. Yes the Ump should have tossed her immediately after the second one. Benefit of doubt on the first but should have at least told her and her coach that would not be allowed. As for her Coach. If It were Me I would have Yanked her Ass out of the game so quick her feet wouldn't touch the ground until she reached the bus.

Amen houndhound! I was shocked it made the news in SA and I'm sure that the player, coach, parents.....all of them are feeling the pressure. I wonder if she was a senior and if so, what if any disciplinary action would be taken???
I believe in playing sports at 110% and giving it everything you've got, but stuff like this has no place on a playing field or court of any kind. Very, very shameful indeed.

And it's preserved on video for all eternity. I hope someday she has to explain it to her kids.

Any final poll out yet. Curious to see how it all washed out now that the playoffs are completed.
