Aledo softball is trying to repeat as state champion, but if the undefeated Bearcats want to advance they’ll have to defeat District 8-5A foe Burleson.
The Elks (14-9) and Bearcats (16-0) will play a single-game playoff at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Colleyville Heritage High School.
Burleson also has a rich softball history. The Elks are in their 12th straight postseason and 20th in the past 21 years. They’re in their 10th regional quarterfinal in 12 years, but the first since 2012.
Burleson defeated Lake Dallas in two games (4-2, 7-6) in the area round.
“We have gotten to the third round because we have the will and want to win,” Burleson first-year coach Summer Owen said. “We are a comeback team and a team that should never be counted out. We won’t roll over for anyone.”
This will be the third meeting this season — with Aledo winning 10-0 in April — but the Elks nearly upset the Bearcats in March. Aledo’s 4-2 win was its closest game of the season.
“Aledo is clearly a great team. We almost beat them the first time,” Owen said. “I know we can beat them one time. If we bring our ‘A’ game, we can — I believe that any team can win on any given day.”
In four postseason games, Burleson sophomore third baseman Zoe Miranda is batting .571 with six RBIs.
Probable pitching matchup: Aledo’s Lauren Craine (15-0) vs. Burleson’s Hannah Loudermilk (13-6).
Here are other notable regional quarterfinal pairings:
• No. 9 Birdville (24-4) vs No. 4 Azle (27-3): Birdville’s Noelle Perritt hit a leadoff homer in a Game 2 win over Joshua and finished the two-game set 5 for 8 with two doubles and three runs scored. Calie Burris pitched 10 innings in two victories, allowing just one run, and she also went 3 for 7 with four RBIs.
Azle senior pitcher Makenzi Harris had two home runs, and Bailee Carter added a solo shot as the Hornets rallied to beat Burleson Centennial in three games. Game 1 starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Saginaw Chisholm Trail.
Probable starters — Birdville’s Calie Burris (16-2) vs. Azle’s Makenzi Harris (13-2).
• No. 8 Keller (21-4) vs No. 5 Flower Mound (23-5-1): Keller junior pitcher Kaylee Rogers improved to 19-2 on the season with two wins (15 innings) in a sweep over Mansfield. Senior shortstop Kaitlyn Alderink had two-run triple in a Game 2 victory.
• Arlington Martin (22-5) vs Wolfforth Frenship (25-6): Martin’s Victoria Jetton hit a solo shot in the second inning in an 11-1 victory over El Paso El Dorado on Saturday.
• Mansfield Legacy (19-5) vs No. 3 Hallsville (30-1): Legacy’s Meagan Dake went 2 for 4 with a grand slam in 5-2 victory over Lufkin, and Sophie Hannabas was 3 for 3 and pitched seven strong innings of two-run ball (one earned) on six hits.
