Travel shouldn’t be an issue considering Alice just left a district that had road trips to the RGV and Zapata. In fact it’s pretty much a straight shot from Alice to the Mission area and a little further up-road is Roma
Yep and looking on the positive side this district should be more competitive than last years save for Calallen.
The schedules aren't out yet, but being as Alice has 4 districtg games, two of those will be at home.
Indeed. I wish Calallen would opt up next time. If De Soto can do it, we might as well give it a shot and just flat out say why. I’d much prefer to play even in that district Alice got stuck in.
You can't really fault or give credit to any coach about non district schedules. Scheduling La Joya doesn't exactly get me excited but there's only so much Castellano can do. The notion of scheduling teams from up north is great for conversation but does playing Desoto in week 2 really going to help you in week 11?? It's not like Desoto is going to open up the play book for non district.
Sorry but you're not getting the point. I'm not just talking about today. I'm talking history. And I understand how it works and that it's not as simple as you seem to think that I think it is. But you think ahead. Like him or not Evans made it happen somehow and this isn't the first time or the first big team he tries to add. You can't tell me that La Joya is the one that came to Alice wanting a game after they went winless last season and were completely blown out by everyone. Before you come back at me understand that I'm not just talking about 2024. I'm talking history. Enough is enough with scheduling cream puffs and not going big like Miller did.
Okay let's talk history then. This is Castellano's 2nd year here and 1st year with the realignment. His only stint as AD prior to Alice was an AD at 3-A Taft.
Now let me repeat this to you slowly so you can understand. Alice doesn't exactly have a stellar history in the past decade. I'm sure the phones were burning and a lot of offers got turned down.
I'm sure La Joya isn't too thrilled about playing Alice either, but it's either that or playing 9 games. Trying to schedule 6 non-district games isn't easy, especially in one day.
Evans is an idiot for scheduling DeSoto unless they made an agreement for DeSoto to put in the JV in the 2nd quarter.
I'll say it like this... why is a chicano kid that plays for Galena Park Northshore more talented than chicano kids down here? I mean they're both chicanos. I'm not comparing a black player from Galena Park to a chicano kid from down here. So why? Why is a chicano kid that plays for Galena Park Northshore better than a chicano kid from down here??? Because YOU ARE A PRODUCT OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. So surround your kids with that level talent by playing against it and yes they will take a beatdown this year but in the long run it's going to make that program better if you're consistent and keep playing beast programs. This is a factual common sense statement to anyone that is thinking about it fairly and not through the eyes of "i don't like Evans".

Alice isn't getting a new stadium from what I hear. How exactly that decision has already been made with no bond or vote or fight at all I have no idea but that's what I'm hearing. Maybe someone can chime in as to why and if it's even a true rumor.

If you all are going to do a bond in May, the decision will have to be made this month to get it on the ballot. The window for voting on bonds and other election closes until November.
The question will be what if they condemn the stadium? Where will you all play your home games? Kingsville? That will be a challenge because SGA and HM King use it and of course the Hogs on Saturdays . Calallen? That might be possibility when we are not at home, but we have six home games this fall. Robstown might be possibility too?

Yeah kinda like Alabama playing Louisiana Monroe year end and out, and all of a sudden Monroe becomes a powerhouse lol.
It's good to play stiffer competition. Say Miller played Smithson Valley. First plays from scrimmage they could hold their own, but eventually they would wear down and probably lose by 28+ points.
Now imagine the 1st play of a game against a team like Desoto and the whole line gets pancaked whether it be offense or defense. Imagine the defense scores 21 poits and the offense scores about the same, and by halftime your offense only had 3 minutes of time of possession, because that is what's going to happen.
Obviously Calallen, Sinton and G-P are legit but overall I don't like this. La Joya was winless and completely blown out of every single game. How are they gonna help you improve? Carroll was blown out 5 times. How are they gonna help you improve? What team on Alice's schedule prepares them for the type of athletic talent you see in deep playoff runs? What team on Alice's schedule is gonna make the players realize the improvements they have to make if they want to compete with anyone in the state? This schedule is great for preparing Alice to compete with anyone in South Texas but that's it.
You're the product of your environment and if you don't surround your environment with big boy programs your players are never gonna get it.
Evans is the standard around South Texas and it's time everyone gives him respect. The balls on that dude to schedule Desoto. He also went after South Oak Cliff 2 years ago. He's the only one around South Texas that get's it.
Making schedules isn't easy. You just can't pick up the phone and pick and choose who you want to play.
I agree that a tough non-district schedule helps, but sometimes you can't make it happen.
As far as Evans scheduling DeSoto, it's a dumbass move on his part. How is he going to evaluate his players when DeSoto is up 50-0 at halftime and a running clock in the 2nd half? I can see scheduling a team like College Station, Smithson Valley, Cedar Park, etc, but DeSoto is a different animal.
I agree with you on him scheduling DeSoto. Not a smart move in any way whatsoever. The team DeSoto totally dismantled in the finals and could have put up 100 on was a DAMN GOOD team that played North Shore in district to a 10 point game. Miller will not sniff the endzone unless Desoto empties their benches and plays some freshman and they will literally score at will and average 20 yards per play if not more. That sort of game does NOT get you better and does not allow you to evaluate where your need to improve a damn bit. Hell, why doesn't he just schedule UT or Alabama while he is at it.
At least he's not scheduling a winless La Joya program that was blown out by everyone. I'm sorry but I disagree with all of you. Miller will not beat DeSoto but that's not all to gain from it. The underclassmen on that Miller team will get to see up close what state championship winning players look and play like and maybe be motivated to be even better in 2025. It's about the long game not just 2024. Not having guts and laughing about someone that does have guts isn't the flex that some of you think it is.
I personally like the move. Some of those Miller kids are going to have memories of scoring td’s against the “unbeatable” Desoto.
And you’re right.
When they see the size and overall fitness level of the Desoto players… especially whichever ones already hold D1 offers… they’ll know where they need to be. They’ll know how they measure up physically… they’ll have the next couple of seasons to get there.
Did you watch Desoto play? If so and you think Miller is going to score a TD, much less TDs, you are showing even more your lack of knowledge outside your little world. DS will wreck Miller badly and the only way they will score is if DS plays freshman 3rd and 4th stringers.
And don't worry, they will see D1 players at literally every position on the field for DS including some of the backups!
Go back and watch what they did to a damn good 6a team in the finals.
Sorry but you're not getting the point. I'm not just talking about today. I'm talking history. And I understand how it works and that it's not as simple as you seem to think that I think it is. You are right on all points, especially about scheduling ND games. Hell, most coaches typically have agreed with 3 other coaches before realignment day for games 1, 2, & 3. So, when you get put in a 6 team district and have to find 2 more ND games for week 4 & 5 it is damn difficult at best.
As far as DS playing their JV goes, I hate to break it to everyone but the Eagles JV would absolutely still light up Miller. I've seen their JV up close in personal in 2014 when my kid was a sophomore and though we lost that game by only a couple points to them in Waco that night they were a minimum of 40 lbs bigger per kid than us across the board and unbelievably fast. And trust me when I say they've ONLY GOTTEN MUCH better since then!
Yep and looking on the positive side this district should be more competitive than last years save for Calallen.

I agree
I'm not sure how the agreed to letting Desoto opt up being there are a ton of 5a D1 schools within an hour of them. The only reason I can think of is that the 3 districts nearest them in 5a D1 are already 9 team districts.
I'll say it like this... why is a chicano kid that plays for Galena Park Northshore more talented than chicano kids down here? I mean they're both chicanos. Now how does that make your team better?
It doesn't and it won't! All this is going to do is demoralize the Miller kids badly.
Scheduling SV, Brennan, Steele, or even Judson or Clemens would have been a much better move. Yes, they likely lose to all of them but at least like you said it would be competitive for a while and not be an absolute blowout from the first snap.
Look, I think Evans is a good young coach that gets the most out of his kids and he is learning every year. I do like that he wants to play strong competition. I think that is great. But this is just not a smart move in any way for those Miller kids. Good Lord man we all saw what Duncanville did to a great North Shore team and Desoto beat Duncanville by 2 scores last year.

You think those Miller kids aren't instantly already working harder in the off-season just knowing Desoto is on their schedule? If you say "no" then you lose all credibility. That's just 1 example of how Miller is already going to be better just from scheduling them. Some of you just don't get it.

You don’t know the kids at Miller if you believe it will demoralize them. These are inner city kids and there is a saying amongst the kids of “We want the smoke”. They are not going to run from this they are going to bust there butts preparing for there moment. Many of them are being recruited and it’s an opportunity to perform against elite talent. We all know they will most likely lose however competing against Desoto is going to be a badge of honor or them.
It’s hard to understand if you are not from the community or spend time around them. This approach may not be good for all schools but it’s definitely a positive for Miller.

I don't know where they will play. But I hope it's near a hospital. Miller will get some kids hurt playing this far above their weight class.

I’m old enough to remember when the entire state of Texas and a few on this very message board gave Calallen no chance in Helll of beating Aledo or even keeping it close . Well we nearly proved them wrong and if we had a few calls go our way thanks to the what seems to be the same Houston Chapter Refs that get assigned their games at Jerryworld, many would’ve had egg on their face and several layers of it too.
Anything is possible. Miller could win. Miller could keep it respectable. But it will take a miracle of some sort biblical proportion for it to happen. I agree with Chino it gives them something to work for as of yesterday.
