3a vs 5a this week in SA.
3a Hallettsville has only allowed 8 points this season in 3 games and is averaging over 43 ppg. They have played backups in all 3 games for a good part of the 2nd halves of these games. Shiner 41-8 Flatonia 43-0 Van Vleck 46-0
5a SA Pieper is 2-1 averaging 34ppg and giving up 25 ppg. They are coming off an impressive 34-31 win over their comal ISD sister school Davenport last week. I believe this is only Pieper's 2nd year of varsity ball and they have quickly become a solid 5a team. Leander Glenn 62-0 Wimberley 6-44 Davenport 34-31
I know Wimberley is awfully good again this year but man that was an azz whoopin they gave Pieper.
I find this an interesting matchup though being a 2 classification difference in the two.

Shiner having a down year? Didn't realize they got hammered in week one. Very down They are currently 0-3 Hallettsville 8-41 Industrial 34-41 Poth 7-31 Granted, Industrials only loss is to a very good Yoakum team 14-36 and Poth's only loss is to Blanco 23-27 so Shiner certainly isn't scheduling any patsies for non-district but it is crazy to think that Boedeker has 3 losses in the first 3 games this year and only had 4 total in his 3 years as Shiner's HC....and 3 of those were last season. I'm sure it is just that they are down a bit in overall talent which is due after a great 3 year run. A lot of folks forget that in Boedeker's first year as a HC their one and only loss was to Refugio in the 3rd round 41-43 and that was a 16-0 Refugio team and their closest win of the playoffs. If Shiner wins that game they likely run off back, to back, to back undefeated seasons from 2019-2021.

Tidehaven has pitched three shutouts so far this year against Goliad, Odem and Palacios. Not the toughest opponents but still impressive!

I find this game intriguing as well. 5a Div 2 vs 3A Div 1, dang.....
Halletsville is kicking booty but I think it's going to be tough for them to keep up with Pieper. Kudos to the Cows for having the huevos to schedule Pieper!

Kudos to the Cows for having the huevos to schedule Pieper! It all comes down to the numbers. In 3A half the offense & defense are 2/platoon players since the talent pool isn’t very deep. Piepers enrollment is probably twice the size of Halletsville. Normally in 5A there are enough decent players to substitute both on offense & defense. Back when GP was in their hay day, they didn’t have a team full of blue chippers but they had a few. What GP had was Akins who knew how to make good players into great players with a lot of good players on varsity. Every game back then was like clockwork and the just beat down smaller teams. It was never flash N dash, just methodical Wing T offense at top speed on every play with tons of substitions the whole game. Many other teams benefitted by hiring Akins old Wing T coordinators as their HC/AD’s. Bush at GP, Vance at Liberty Hill and Les Goad at Geronimo Navarro. At times I do wish GP had a few old Wing T plays with the old hiddy ball trick plays, but normally good colleges don’t bother to recruit players on teams that run that offense. A few do get recruited buts because they are great athletes and players.

One of the reasons I love watching Whitaker's Sandcrabs!

Kudos to the Cows for having the huevos to schedule Pieper! Don't let their first alignment numbers fool you ch15 because I'd bet that Pieper is already way over the minimum # to be 5a D1 now. That is a huge school and that area is growing super, super fast. They likely will be 5a D1 for the foreseeable future and maybe even push 6a numbers soon. Pieper's projected enrollment # for realignment was 1750 so I'd be willing to bet they are all over the 1925 needed for 5a D1 right now They were supposed to take quite a few away from Smithson Valley but from everything I'm hearing SV is above the 6a cutoff number themselves and never really dropped into 5a D1 numbers. They were realigned off of projections with the new school opening up. Hallettsville's enrollment # was 392 so they are lower end of 3a D1 . I'd say Pieper is at least 450% larger than Hallettsville is right now!

They were at 1750 projected enrollment and were likely over that number already last year. I'd say they are closer to 2000 now than they are 1800. Hallettsville had 392 kids. As far as why most teams don't run the slot T anymore it is because good defenses with a good front 7 will shut it down even when it is run like clockwork. just look at what Wagner did to LH this year. And IMO, colleges couldn't care less what offense is run when recruiting kids. They will find a kid nowadays in any offense or defense if he is talented enough to play at that next level.

But when that smashmouth offense is met with a smashmouth defense with a good front 7 and that offense cannot throw the ball well, it's lights out.

Speaking of Halletsville. Jonathan Brooks is stepping up nicely for the Longhorns. Played some very heads up ball at a critical moment.

I bet that will be a trip to see the size difference of the two teams.
