Are the multiple white buildings off to the side a business district, part of the school, or homes? The facilities are awesome! The reason for my question is two fold. First tax purposes, if that is business district, woowee y'all got a gold mine to feed upkeep of those facilities! If it's the school not so much. If it's homes, that's not as good as having businesses but still that's tax money for upkeep. Secondly, the long ball out of the park. If it's school property, no complaints to be handled. Businesses won't complain too much unless you damage a multi-million dollar project from a homerun ball crashing through it. Home owners are a pain in the rump! The nag about balls coming into their yards and the school will get all kinds of calls about it. But hopefully no little kids get dinged by a ball while playing in their yard because that would just be awful! Anyway, GP definitely stepped up and delivered some amazing facilities for those deserving kids over there. On the east side those are homes, there will be ample space to prevent long ball from hitting a home, west side across the street is the high school, north side is Buddy Ganem rd. Most of that land north of Buddy Ganem has already been bought up to build new subdivisions.

Awesome facilities Although I'm not sure what the need is for covered seating at a baseball or softball game since they don't play when it rains. lol Clem, my bet is to have shade for the spectators and protection from foul balls. I can see multiple tournaments being held in Portland. That new ball park and the use of both of the city owned turf fields would more than adequately provide enough fields to have a big tournament.

Congrats on the new digs!!! Those kids deserve it over there.

Congrats on the new digs!!! Those kids deserve it over there. My belief is all athletes should have the best equipment and facilitiies their ISD”s can provide. I’ve been in GP for 32 years now and about to retire. I’ve seen times when the Supt had to borrow funds just to keep the lights on in our schools, players getting staph infections in the old fieldhouse and even coaches talking about how poor our facilities where back then. Times and situations have changed and GP can provide our athletes and students the best schools and facilities. Am I glad and proud, yes, because our kids for decades had to make due with much less. All the players in our district can play in those facilities not just GP. Hopefully other ISD”s will start to demand better facilities for their athletes.

I can tell you the year we were number one in state 04 or 05 Staph was rampant in that old field house. The moms were going to the locker room weekly to disinfect it from top to bottom. The facilities were awful.

Yeah I remember going to the old field and the old run down bathrooms on the visitor side. Man those were awful! You guys over there had some great teams, despite the lack of flashy facilities. As far as staph goes, man that stuff is awful!!!! Beeville had issues with that, as did TM. A lot of it was because of the tackling dummies not getting cleaned after practice and then adding to it the lack of hygiene the teen boys were having... totally disgusting issues...

Luckily in my day we didnt have staff problembs. We had what we had and we liked it. We didnt know better cause fancy wasn't a thing at GP. We just threw dirt on it and played are butts off. We knew that Marty Akins, Mark James, and others used the same equipment. The crowds were huge back in the day and you couldnt buy a meal in public cause others would pay or the owner wouldn't accept our money. Mac at Macs BBQ would take our order and tell the register person its on him. Just play hard on friday night boys. Awwwww, those were the days! Fast forward to today, the new Yo philly has a GP mural on the side of the building and will be open soon. It was done very tastefully to creat a sense of pride in portland. Things are fancy and are getting crazy fancy now.

Here is the link to the Field House of Dreams that will be co-located to the baseball and softball fields. The ribbon cutting occurred in November 2023. youtu.be/OH9zEgnzs8A
