This needs to end. I hate with a passion hearing this at this time of year with kids that also have promise in other sports, especially football. And the middle schools invested their time to get that kid there. And some schools end up breaking these kids heart and their parents (more so the parents at one particular school I won’t name) when they don’t get the playing time they were baited to quit football. Or they have a Tommy John and become furniture on the bench. Rant over.

Every college coach I speak to about athletes ask how well rounded they are and want to hear they play other sports.

It all goes back to specialty clinics, training facilities, and travel leagues. They are in the business of making money and the more said kid is playing a single sport the more money these businesses make. So these employees tell parents and coaches that their kids/players need to be single sport focused in order to get a scholarship or be the starter.

Urban Meyer used to say he would have his recruiters look at how a potential recruit performed in the other sport they played. Not so much to see if they were tops in those sports as they were in football at their respective school. It was to see how they performed not being the stud in that sport and often they were not. This gave him the insight if the kid would be a good team player.

Football, Basketball, Track and Baseball back in '80's for me. Little league, junior league and senior league baseball but never did play youth football not until 7th grade and went in clueless about plays so took me until 8th grade to be starter defense and offense, kicking and punting team. If the opportunity to specialize in one sport was available or affordable back then would've had love it as a kid back then and would had like to done baseball but still play the other sports during school year.
Sinton has a lot of kids spend their summers in travel teams good portion of them still play football but baseball is where they devote more time to. Kids like competing against other talent around the state or country and parents can provide it for them I'm happy for them. I would like some of the kids that only do baseball not give up on football to early because most of the them were starters coming up the ranks but I understand they're focus on one sport and hopefully leads to further their education or athletic career.
Yea it's about the money for the ones that put these travel teams/league together but they do provide them with opportunity to keep playing the sport that might one day get them to college ball.

I just don’t like it when parents are coerced to have them put pressure on their kids to go baseball only. Or some of these select leagues being honest about a kids talent for the next level or beyond. Seen a number of kids go this way and they didn’t play one inning of college ball and some even quit or stopped caring their Senior year. If a kid really has the talent to go to the next level or beyond, it gets established early. Everyone knew Blake Mitchel was going places his Sophomore year and the same is true with former Calallen great Wyatt Mathisen. But his Dad didn’t get in his way and he played basketball through his Junior year. I understand if you get to that Junior year and you are looking at signing a million dollar contract a year later, you don’t want to risk an injury although the risk is very real more so these days with a TJ.

Looks like Baseball is bleeding over to the football threads.
