I saw them play 7 on 7 and the Qb position doesn’t look like it’s a strength of the team. Cant throw the ball if he is running from defenders.

Carroll will have a lot of skill positions to fill in, however I was told they also had a move in running back that was an all district full back last year at moody as a freshman. Their quarterback position is still up in the air, from the looks of it the guy that was inline to takeover as qb1 has decided to focus on just baseball his senior year. I do not know what they had last year as far as qb in the jv and freshman level. Jv and varsity practice together (freshman on the same field but separated as a unit). From watching all varsity and jv qb’s practice last season… if last years #2 is not playing football this season… we have nobody that can excel at the position. It’s going to take an athlete moving over from another position and learning qb quick, or we gotta just run the ball every play. Last years #2 is the only qb on the team that could have any success at the position this fall. That said, I never watched the freshman team practice… so there might be some potential that the freshman starter could come in as a sophomore and lead the team. Color me skeptical though. If the freshman starter was that much of a standout, I’m sure I’d already know about him.

If the QB is a big issue, I'd change the offense up and do a very run heavy power offense. Something similar to the wing T Calallen has used, or a slot T style. The beauty of the wing T like Cal uses, is they can run it out of a spread look and spread the defense out so they have to cover those receivers. That takes the QB out of the equation and they can use the receivers like the Niners use Debo Samuel. Then the QB can use small routes or bubble routes that are quick to get his confidence up, hide his flaws, and get the them going offensively. That will also help the defense stay off the field more than necessary by eating up the clock. I am very curious as to how all the staff changes are going to effect them, but with QB issues, that can be deflating to the progress they made as a program last season.

I agree with wc82. If you don't have a kid that can throw the ball well, line up and get creative running the football.

I’ll know more once practice starts, but I have a very strong feeling this is what we’ll be doing. My son will be competing for the fullback position (he was starting fullback part of last season).., and he’s been told that the position will be extremely important this season, in both the running and passing game. We’d love to be able to use the same person as a fullback and tight end without leaving the field to create mismatches. My kid is 6’2 on the field, a great blocker, and he’s got some speed being our top JV 100M guy during track. The fact that a great competitor has transferred in at the same position has lit a fire under his ass. He’s working hard. No matter who wins the position, the team will be better because of the competition. I’ve been waiting to see this fire in my boy, it’s got me fired up!

You can’t change an offense overnight. The kids from Calallen start learning the offense in 7th grade.

Their improvement last year was due to the offensive line. From everything I hear their line be improved from last year. Coach Garcia was a major reason for the lines improvement. He’ll have had a full year with this group.

But if we don’t have a qb that can complete a pass consistently, we’ll be in trouble. For as bad as this board dogs this district… all the teams in this district will eat up a team that is weak at the qb position. I’m very interested in watching the qb competition shake out.

You can’t change an offense overnight. The kids from Calallen start learning the offense in 7th grade. Yes they do learn it early on, but you are correct in saying it can't be changed overnight. You can however change schemes, terms, blocking, and plays through practice and hard work. Good/Great coaches change the scheme based on the Jimmy's and Joe's. For instance, when Danaher had great QB play, he opened up the offense and they had a big time passing game. When he didn't have that option he closed it down and used smash mouth football to win. Same goes for Soza over in Beeville. He's a slot T guy, and when his son came up, he opened up and spread the ball around, when he didn't have a QB, he went right back to slot T. Same can be said for many coaches that are good/great coaches. The coaches that struggle are the stubborn ones that try to fit "square pegs in round holes". If they try to run an offense not in the wheelhouse of abilities for the kids, doesn't matter if the coach is Nick Satan, they will not be successful. For instance, you would not take a team like Aledo, Katy, Westlake, Guyer, Allen, or SOC and put them in the slot T and expect them to run it as successful as Liberty Hill. Just like you wouldn't take the Liberty Hill kids and implement any of the above named teams offenses and expect them to be successful. Those teams have different types of kids, and those coaches know that. So they create offenses and defenses around their strengths. Thus they become the powerhouses they are. If Carroll wants to win games, improve the mindset, and build a better culture, they have to do what is best for the skill set of the kids. They have a lot of work to do to right the ship in filling coaching and player position holes left from last season, but it is completely doable if they form the schemes around the strengths of the kids. The kids have to get that fire in their belly too, but it starts with setting them up for success. Summer workouts, summer "homework", and getting the qbs in to do "voluntary" work to get their strengths and weaknesses identified can go a long way in getting the scheme needed to make them the most successful. Heck maybe they can implement a spread inverted bone look and have 3 to 6 ball carriers running up and down the field confusing people, or maybe they line up pro-I and go west coast offense (niners style) and balance the short passing with the smash mouth running. Regardless, I do hope they do right by the kids, and keep getting them better. Even if the school is ran by ccisd, the kids deserve success. So I am rooting for the kiddos.

Yes we do dog ccisd for the weak district. Not because of the kids though. Because of what looks like a set up for one school over the others by grown adults that are supposed to make decisions that are best for all kids. That doesn't happen in that district though. I would love nothing more than to see all those ccisd KIDS be successful. The kids are the ones being hurt and impacted the most. They do what they are told to do, and sadly they are being let down by adults making the decisions. You are 100% right though, if any team, regardless of district, classification, or type of football they are playing, runs an offense that the qb is not able to run properly, that team will be eaten alive at any level. For Carroll that would set them back decades again because those kids were starting to buy in last season, and they started seeing better results for their efforts. If they start seeing losses more and more, that could really kill that program long term.

I know we have a back with speed, and we’ve got a decent O-line coming back. We also have a few great receivers too. I know Neatherlin ran some wing t in the school he led before coming to Carroll… so it’s in his ammo bag. We might see some of it this fall. Last year we ran a spread. Offense was good to great with the players we had… our QB was very accurate, so it worked well. I just don’t think we have that luxury this season. Time will tell! I’m banking on an athletic player moving positions and helping the team just enough at QB to compliment a strong lean towards the run. Or maybe we’ll get a late transfer from a kid reading this post and riding the pine at one of the other local schools. Lol

Good when they played the weaker teams for sure but not anywhere near great.

Doesn't matter. District order will be... 1. C.C. Miller 2. C.C. Ray 3. Victoria West 4. Victoria East
I'll put money on it.
