Aaaaaand back to Alice.... are the stadium improvements coming that were discussed earlier this year? TM is well on the way to turf. They leveled the field and are in the process of laying the turf from the last pics I saw. They posted on the TM Facebook page, and people were complaining that "athletics gets all the money" blah, blah, blah. Several people including myself pointed out that the stadium hasn't had much done since 1985 when it was built. Then pointed out the new ag building, new theatre/ band hall, and newer computer lab. It's amazing how blind people are... That seems to be the same over on this side of the Northwest. This fall, Calallen hosted three band contests and a forth if you count the Drum Line Corps of America contest in July. I can almost be certain all four contests brought more economic activity to the area around the high school than our entire football schedule. I mean the only time we even got close to a sell out this last season was the Alice game. GP had a decent crowd, but Kingsville and Hidalgo brought enough fans to fill an old school telephone booth. Come to think of it that team from Mexico City had just as many fans as Hidalgo. But just horrible numbers for football attendance this fall which should be better next year since we will play Cuero and Flour Bluff at home and La Feria actually travels well and TM will show up just to see them get closer to the 40th anniversary of their last win against Cal. But back to the band stuff. We hosted the Area contest which was the last round before state. It was 36 bands from Canyon Lake to Brownsville and as far west as Uvalde and east as Columbia in the Houston Area . We had to have at least 10,000 people if you count the bands in the stadium at one time when the first round results were announced. I was working the bus/food delivery entry area from the entire day so I know how many local restaurants and catering companies were making deliveries for food for the bands and this was from breakfast to dinner because some of those band started performing at 7 in the morning. Parents and boosters were asking for directions to good sit down places and where the local HEB was. So the next time I hear some knucklehead say stadium improvements only benefit football I am going to just jump down their throats especially if it comes from another band parent. Having that turf and large enough grandstand on the home side is a big selling point why the UIL keeps in Calallen along with the easy highways access and being as central as possible for the region. We just need a even a smaller scale Buc Stadium scoreboard and sound system to help enhance the show experience. EXACTLY!!!! |

The vote on the turf was a NO. But I had always heard that it was a bullcrap vote and even if it didn't pass, which it didn't, they were still gonna get turf. Fast forward to right before this season started and AISD fired the father and son that are responsible for the natural grass. So it's our assumptions they are going turf. No idea if that's true though or even when. Alice didn't need turf, Alice needs new lighting and a Buc Stadium style scoreboard. Yeah, you guys needed some minor upgrades compared to TM. With better lighting, grandstand upgrades, a better scoreboard, and definite improvements to restrooms, Alice would draw even more attention for playoffs. I find it remarkable Javelina Stadium has fallen off the playoff venue radar. It's seen better days for sure , but is still useable. |

Alice has been hit hard with economy. Many of the oil field service companies have moved toward the San Antonio area because that is closer to the other side of the Eagleford shale drilling. The Natural gas side is on the Alice side and the liquids side is on the Pleasanton side. The reduction in price of oil has heart the drilling overall. Jobs have dropped off. Texas A&I change to TAM Kingsville has resulted in TAM Kingsville becoming a stepchild to Texas A&M. I no longer make sales calls in Alice and don’t get info like I use to. . The King Ranch family multiplied and many moved to San Antonio and the big city and they want more money and removed Tio and put in a money guy from Houston and he does not support TAM Kingsville like Tio. I retired and have not been on the King Ranch to work in years now. The new manager charged the pipeline people 10,000 dollars in damages if they dug a bell hole in the ground. He changed out owners of deer leases for highest bidder .

Same coach? No changes? AISD only screws you if you're one of their own apparently. But if you've been trying to leave for 5 of your 6 years there it's all good. So I guess then Alice's future playoff runs depend on not meeting Calhoun in round 1 with this dude and his brother as the coaches. It's a shame but true. Any rumors on turf?

If the board was serious after what happened that night we got ONE & DONE and embarrass with the 1988, 98 & 08 strong talent that we had vs Calhoun they would’ve got rid of that coach the day after. That Calhoun game was a bad matchup for us with that Flexbone which our DC never made no adjustments to contain with the Texas Tech style defense we ran. No changes and whatnot we’re gonna be stuck with that Coach miserably & our fanbase has suffered enough …. SMH
