Let us keep this in prospective. Refugio was tired of having coaches knocked out of the playoffs in the second and third round with talent they knew could go a lot further. Coach George Harris had Devin Bisby’s father on his team. Coach Jason Herring won a state title at Sonora. Refugio hired him to win State Titles. You may not agree with how he does it and you don’t pay his salary. He has been criticized for running up the score on some weak teams like Coach Ray Akins and Coach Phiil Danaher. Coach Jason Herring served under another winning Coach by the name of Coach Sam Harrell. “It never bothered me when a coach ran the score up on me, I felt it was my responsibility to give him a good game”. Coach Gordon Wood Keep this in perspective When you are in the playoffs in the 2nd round and up 3 TDs late in the 4th and do what I saw him do, it is straight up BS! He got the ball back in the last couple of minutes of the game and with all starters in the game he went on a drive to score another TD. He called at least 1 timeout, ran a reverse, and threw several deep balls. That is not keeping starters in to get them in game shape or anything else...that is running up the damn score and NOTHING more! The next week they got their azz whooped by East Bernard and that coach could have put up a 70+ on them but didn't. He rested his starters in the 2nd half and still won state. The shiner coach did the same thing last night or Refugio would have lost 70+ to 7!

Coach Gordon Wood There is a difference between running up the score because the other team can't stop you... And running up the score with a long pass play with seconds to go like he did a few years ago in the playoffs and a few other instances over the years which has led to Refugio's reputation and disdain from some quarters. The only exception I have to running up the score at all cost is if the other team doesn't accept your gesture of good will toward the end of the game when they try to run the clock out with simple run plays and starts playing dirty. And if it doesn't stop, that means it's only being condoned by the opposing coaching staff. This means they must still want to play.

Clem do you mean his own medicine is winning football games which they do more of than your team. I think a coach is hired to win football games. Normally that would be the case but not in Refugio. Herring wasn’t hired to beat up weak opponents in their weak district, Herring was hired to win Championships. In the last few years he has failed to coach up the expectations at Refugio. I work with some parents who have kids in the program at Refugio and many are telling me that the football people are starting to have thoughts of replacing Herring. He’s just not living up to their expectations anymore at Refugio. We might just see a new HC at Refugio in the near future. He's won 3 state titles. Refugio only had 2 in its entire overrated history prior to Herring. Tell the parents you talk to they are clueless and to get off that undeserved high horse. Refugio didn't get manhandled last night because of coaching. Refugio lost because players were scared to tackle #1 and #2 out of Shiner's backfield.

They also tried to recruit that East Bernard QB before the season by offering the dad a job on the staff but it obviously didn't happen and karma was served.

You are talking about the Slanina kid that went to TCU, right? He was a heck of a player and just too bad he couldn't stay healthy in college.

If he would of went anywhere other than East Bernard it would of been GP, so he could play for Harris.

It’s the people in Refugio who write the checks to the program and the people who hire and fire coaches at Refugio. Herring doesn’t give a crap what a parent says in that town, Never has and never will.

Well I suppose you think the coach should tell the players to not score after you told them to never quit. Maybe he should have them punt on first down. This is a teachable moment. It is called Killer Instinct. I have seen many teams that did not put the other team away when they were ahead and that team came back and won. They did not have Killer Instinct. .
So you don’t like Coach Jason Herring. I think I understand what he is doing when getting his players ready for the next game.
My cousin was coaching on the other side of the field and I am happy for him and his mom and his wife who grew up in Yoakum.

1995 Calallen 69 GP 21 Calallen ran up the score on Coach Bob Loomis in order to build stats for Calallen's favorite son Wes Danaher. 1996 Calallen 51 GP 19 Coach Loomis was all chuck and duck offense 1997 Calallen 55 GP 7 Coach Loomis was 7-3 and was replaced by Coach Tim Holt.
Wes Danaher Corpus Christi Calallen High School _
Inducted in 2013 Danaher rewrote the Class 4A state record book in 1995, when he ran for a single-season record 3,562 yards, scored 47 TDs and led the Wildcats to the state semifinals for the third straight year. The two-time all-state running back also set all-class records for career 100-yard games (44), career 200-yard games (20), and single-season 200-yard games (12). Danaher’s amazing run of 12 200-yard games included a string of 10 consecutive games with three consecutive 300-yard games. He also set 4A marks for career rushing (8,855, behind only the legendary Kenneth Hall of Sugar Land in all classes), career TDs (117 -- 114 rushing and three receiving), single-season scoring (282) and career scoring (704). He signed with SMU and spent two seasons with the Mustangs before an injury ended his college career.

I am not talking about pulling starters in the 3rd quarter when you have a 3 score lead. Re-read what I said and get back to me if you don't see anything wrong with what he did that night in SA against Lexington! I expect a coach to sub when he is up 3+ TDs late in the game and let his 2s get some time and hopefully keep a key starter from getting a serious injury. I expect those 2s to go at it as hard as they can and if they score 3 more TDs sobeit. That simply wasn't the case and in fact, two old men sitting next to me and a coaching buddy of mine came straight out and said late in the 3rd quarter when Refugio took a 2 score lead, "NOW IT IS TIME TO RUN IT UP ON THEM". So, his BS has indeed carried over in to the minds of even some of their fans!

It’s not that someone runs up the score, it’s how you run up the score.
Some years back Herring would pull his starters in the 2nd because they were up 50-0 at half. He later said that it costed him deep in the playoffs because his team wasn’t as conditioned as it should have been. So he started leaving his starters in and winning games 75-0. I don’t have a problem with that at all. I personally think he did the right thing and he led his team to 3 State Titles.
But when you’re up by 60 late in the 4th and you’re calling timeouts and throwing Hail Marys, that goes against sportsmanship. You have to be able to toggle winning, never quitting, and sportsmanship. I don’t know what great life lesson comes from picking on the weak.
