Two years ago, San Antonio Wagner dropped to 5A and terrorized schools in Region 4 with lopsided win after lopsided win and two runs to the 5A D1 state semifinals. The Thunderbirds did well, losing only to rival Judson in the regular seasons. Now, realignment has them back in 6A reunited with former stablemates Judson, Steele, Clemens etc.
That journey begins this weekend in their season opener against Smithson Valley. As last years 4th place district finisher, this will be an early barometer on how well they might do. Fascinating game coming up. Can Waggie make a playoff run in 6A as well?

I agree that this will be a big test for wagner for sure. I really think they stand an excellent shot at a playoff shot this year. I see this district like this right now Judson/SV 1/2 or 2/1 Clemens Everyone else fighting it out for the last spot. The only reason I put Clemens as a solid #3 is I think they have a good QB who is a natural leader and I think they will get better as the season goes. Right now I think SC, NB, Wagner, and Steele are pretty equal. If EC plays Steele within 14 points and or beats them, I say the Knights likely will not make the playoffs at all and the transformation from a top notch State program to average is complete and the powers that be at SCUCISD have achieved what they've been striving for since Mike Jinks departed for the college ranks!

Ok time for Waggies mid season progress report.
Wagner is competitive but looks to be on the outside looking in with regards to a playoff spot.
Smithson Valley 27-24 W (OT) SA East Central 54-7 W New Braunfels 19-36 L Cibolo Steele 27-42 L
The T-Birds started strong with a win over SV, although the Rangers weren’t healthy at the time. After a blowout win over EC, it looked like the T Birds were flying high and sporting a new look. But New Braunfels snapped its 3 year district winning streak and Wagner is now on a two game skid. Those losses are crucial, as Steele and NB were supposed to be the teams on the bubble for a playoff spot.
But Wagner is still in the thick of the race, with the following games left:
Schertz Clemens SA South San Converse Judson

No doubt BNB....the waters have gotten very muddy for playoff spots in the district.
SV and Judson are going to be in and right now I think Steele gets in with the win over Clemens and lucky win over NB. I think the winner of the NB/SC game gets in and that likely will be NB. The Unicorns are playing tough, solid football right now and offensively are very, very balanced. SC does not have the offense to beat NB this year IMO.
This is what I think happens below to finish up
1st - Judson 7-0 2nd - SV 5-2 3rd - Steele 5-2 4th - NB 4-3
The SC/NB game decides 4th spot

Congrats to the Wagner Thunderbirds. They have advanced to the 6A state playoffs as 27-6A’s fourth place team. A series of close trip ups by New Braunfels (vs Steele and Clemens), coupled with Wagner’s track meet vs Clemens opened the door for Wagner to advance. Good luck to the T-Birds.

Man BNB, I really, really thought you guys would handle SC last week and am sorry you guys didn't. I had you guys in at the #4 spot. You guys had Steele as well but mistakes at the end of the game cost the Unicorns dearly. NB outplayed Steele IMO. I am happy for Wagner though and wish them well but in all seriousness, it appears that Westlake goes D2 and LT D1 meaning that every one else in R4 is gonna get drilled again this year! I do not see anyone in R4 beating LT or WL this year again

Hopefully NB can focus on cutting down those penalties and improves a bit more to grab that playoff spot from Wagner next year. Speaking of Wagner, the T-birds concluded their season by losing in the bi-district playoffs to San Antonio Johnson 56-42. Way to go Wagner on a successful return to Class 6A!
