I was less than a mile away from school with a busload of MS/HS students, when someone on the two-way radio said, “a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center.” I looked in the mirror to check my kids, and thought, I’m 2,000 miles from New York, why am I checking the kids?
I tried to imagine how a plane could hit a building, probably a small plane, heart attack …who knows? Then I thought of that B-25 that hit the Empire State Building back in 1945. Empire State Building is still standing, so a small plane can’t do too much damage to WTC.
Dropped the kids off, parked my bus, and strolled into the drivers lounge. No one was talking, everyone was looking at the TV, and the newsman was talking about the airliner that crashed into one tower. I remember Miss MO, stepping toward the TV hands up saying NO..NO..NO.. as if she could stop the second plane from flying into the second tower.
From that point, we all have the same story………GOD BLESS AMERICA

I was in the Army and a First Sergeant (E8) with 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY. All of the 101st Division First Sergeants went on a Quarterly 4-mile run with the Commanding General, Major General (MG/ Two-Star General) Richard A. Cody from 6 to 6:45 AM. We then went to shower and put on our uniforms for a 4-hour discussion with MG Cody from 8 AM to 12 Noon. I hopped in my truck and was enroute to the meeting at 7:45 AM. I had the radio on. Then one of the radio DJ's stated that one of the World Trade Center Towers had been struck by a plane and was smoking. Then he shouted that the second tower was just struck by another plane. The radio DJ immediately stated that the USA is under attack. I arrived at the meeting and MG Cody immediately stated that we all should be aware what was happening that morning and the importance of leadership. MG Cody's aide walked up to him and whispered in his ear that the Pentagon was just hit. MG Cody ordered the Aide to call the Provost Marshall and lockdown the post and initiate imminent danger procedures. 45-minutes later MG Cody's superior Commanding General (GENl/Four Star-General), The US Forces Command (FORSCOM) called to order the measure that MG Cody had already instituted. After the 4-hour discussion then I returned to my Company to setup 24-hour Guard Duty and prepare the Company for orders to protect Fort Campbell and the assigned Soldiers. Watched the events on TV later that Tuesday night when I finally got home to my military housing on post at 10:30 PM.

I was on the way to my office, listening to a talk radio show when they started talking about what they were watching on TV in their studio. They thoughy at first because of the distance of the intial picture that it might have been a small plane that crashed, then they got closer shots showing the jumbo jet that made an impact. Of course they were only speculating (pilot error, plane malfunction) until the second plane hit the other tower and then all bets were off and they knew what it was. I get to my office, everyone was sitting in the conference room watching the event unfold on TV. Needless to say, nothing got done that day. We were all shocked, you started hearing things about possible car bombs going off, other planes possibly heading for other targets around the country, etc. and you just sat there kind of in a funk and just praying that your loved ones and friends were safe.

I was talking to my sons this weekend about some of the things that went on 10 years ago (one was 3 and the other was about to turn 1) and I told him that every plane that was over US airspace was ordered to land at the nearest airport capable to land their aircrafts (I recall CC International having all sorts of aircraft land there), the border entries closing, Valdmir Puttin ordering the Russian forces to stand down, etc. But I forgot what Defcon level we went too. I wanted to say 2.

I was working from my house. My older son, a student at Lamar at the time, called me and told me to turn on the TV. I was amazed. Then I remember seeing the 2nd plane and the TV news guys saying something like "they are low and out of the normal traffic pattern for the nearby airports" then saw it crash into the building. Just hard to believe. Then the Pentagon & the crash in Penn. Watched it on TV the rest of the day, went to a special service at church that night to pray for our country.
My wife was a school teacher in Beaumont. They had a scheduled gathering of all of the middle school students in the district at the Montaigne Center at Lamar U campus. They had just left their schools on busses when the first plane crashed, and then heard about the 2nd plane. She was not able to watch the news, but knew something was going on. Some people had seen the busses going to the Montaigne center and reported it to the news that the Beaumont ISD was evacuating all students. Started a mini-panic in Beaumont.

The only time the US went to DEFCON 2 was during the Cuban Missile crisis.

Was working at my first real job out of college for a start up engineering company. 10-12 employees working out of the owners converted barn as an office.
Most of the office was out traveling that day so we had less than 6 people at the office. The internet was down on us that day. Our account lady came in late and said did you hear, a plane hit the twin towers. Most of us just blew it off, small plane rookie pilot blah blah. It was not till lunch when we all went down to the local restaurant to eat and we saw all the news.
Mom worked at Lackland AFB(still does) called her up and she said the base was on full alert. A surreal day.
