Like Grapevine and Southlake Carroll, Aledo will be sending boys and girls teams to the UIL state golf tournament, which begins Monday in the Austin area.
The Bearcats from Aledo, though, found about the most opposite ways to get both squads to Wolfdancer Golf Golf Course near Bastrop.
The Aledo girls cruised to a 65-stroke win two weeks ago at the Class 5A Region I tournament in Lubbock, but the boys improved by 13 strokes on the last day to finish third and clinch the final spot in the state tournament by one shot.
The girls team will be trying to win a championship in its fourth straight state tournament appearance after finishing fourth last year. They finished third in 2008.
The boys, meanwhile, haven’t been to state since 2011, and they had to make up ground to get there.
After the first round of regionals, the Aledo boys sat in sixth place with a team score of 329 strokes. So when the Bearcats were among the first teams to tee off the second day, they just went out and played, with the pressure not coming until they posted a 316.
“You didn’t really know what was happening, because we were the first wave out,” Aledo coach Greg Nelson said. “The only tension was waiting for those other teams to come in.”
The Bearcats watched the scores roll in for an hour.
“That was probably the worst part,” said senior Steven Shurtz, who fired a final-round 77. “It was pretty sketchy, but it was a good ending.”
Canyon Randall and Cleburne — both with lower scores than Aledo the first day — tied for fourth at 346, a shot behind Aledo.
“We didn’t have anything to lose, being in sixth place, and being able to pass those teams in front of us,” said Nelson, who coaches both Bearcats squads.
The Aledo boys are made up of two seniors, two sophomores and a freshman, Sam Shryoc, who shot a team-low 156 at regionals.
The girls team is more experienced, with four seniors and a junior. Senior Cheyenne Knight is one of the top players in the country, and last year’s 4A (now 5A) state champion.
Knight won regionals by three shots, shooting a 145. Aledo also got top-five finishes from Mary Katherine Ingram (150, third); Taylor Brookshire (158, fourth) and Quincy Ballard (160, fifth).
It’s a fourth state tournament for Ballard and Brookshire.
“You have to be playing good golf at the right time, and I think we are, and you have to handle the nerves,” Nelson said. “Because the state tournament, this is the best of the best, and it’s not like some tournaments where you know going into it that you’re one of the best teams. All the teams here are good.”
In addition to a large number of area teams headed to state, Trophy Club Nelson’s Alexandra Batista is in the 6A girls field, and Zach Cole of Fort Worth Arlington Heights and Crowley girls player Kyong Kim are in the 5A events.
