Does anyone know if any of the schools' budget cuts will affect the number of sub-varsity teams this year (i.e. "A", "B", "C" teams)? I heard some schools might combine teams due to travel costs. That would suck for the kids, especially at the middle school level, who may have less opportunities for playing time.

I think they're trying to get the sub-varsity games on the same night in the same location. Instead of having the junior high at home and frosh/jv on the rode, they might try to cram all of the games into one evening. Tough for schools with multiple teams per grade level. Heard they might do something similar with volleyball and have all the high school games on the same day instead of frosh/jv on Monday/Thursday and varsity on Tuesday/Friday. And I heard that the Mathis band won't be making road trips to any away games. Haven't confirmed though.

I heard FB is having a hard time getting games for their Sophomore and Freshmen B teams so some schools must have cut those programs. Los Fresnos isn't bringing their JV to scrimmage so FB had to get CC Carroll to fill their spot. I think you will see a lot more local scrimmages and preseason games with the next round of scheduling. CCISD 5A schools are in a bind just because of the logistics of their district. We have it pretty good in 4A.

The Calallen ISD School Board is going to vote on raising our tax rate by 3 cent per $100 per valuation. Normally I frown big time on tax raising now a days because our different entities seem to flush it down the toilet on non sense or incompetence as soon as they get it. But the Calallen School Board has been pretty frugal over the years and I don't have an issue with this. I mean, since I lived here (16 years), we have had one or two bond issues and the last one being the largest at $49 million when really they could of asked and the voters would have passed a much larger one. Besides, property values have gone down some the past two years, so it would be absorbed.

I also think the State's revenues aren't going to suffer as much as predicted because of the Eagleford Shale and Delaware Basin production so we might be back to status quo funding next year.

That's what I think too and what some in the legislature said as well. But it's best to have that tax revenue in the account first before spending it. We don't want to be in a Washington style hole here in Texas because the fix after that might mean the end of a bunch of things as we know them today, even with some minor tweaks to account for less revenue.

We are rapidly getting to a "pay to play" requirement. Problem is, I think it will be a lot more than $50/sport. And a lot of kids parents can't or won't pay. I'm sure some sort of accomodation will be made for those on free/reduced lunch plans, but its going to hurt some schools. Remember, losing 1 or 2 key athletes can make a huge difference.
