Every year in the annual DCTF Summer Edition, the staff at Dave Campbell’s selects a coach of the year from every classification and the time is now. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is proud to announce its 2014 Coaches of the Year.
Class 6A Coach of the Year: Gene Johnson, Cy Ranch
Coach Johnson and Cy Ranch go all the way back to 2008, when the school opened. In 2014, Johnson helped lead the Mustangs on a stunning run to the state title game, riding a 12-game winning streak to AT&T Stadium and guiding the still-young program (which has played varsity ball since 2010) to new heights. The Mustangs went into the playoffs with little experience, but their second-ever playoff berth was a memorable one.
Class 5A Coach of the Year: Steve Wood, Aledo
Coach Wood held the state championship trophy high and proud after a thrilling 49-45 victory over Temple in the 5A Division I state championship game. Wood entered the season as the interim head coach after Tim Buchanan stepped down to become the full-time athletic director for Aledo ISD. No matter: Wood hit the ground running and the team didn’t skip a beat. After a 15-1 season, Wood’s job was no longer in question.
Class 4A Coach of the Year: Jerry Vance, Liberty Hill
Vance helped lead Liberty Hill through a brutal district and turned Liberty Hill into one of the most feared teams in Region IV. Even faced with high expectations, Vance’s Panthers found a way to surprise the state. “They never gave up, and there always seemed to be someone who would step up and make a play that needed to be made,” Vance said.
Class 3A Coach of the Year: Chad Worrell, Brock
Playing in its first varsity season after a year as an independent in 2013, the Eagles soared to unbelievable heights, winning their district in the first year — almost unheard of in Texas high school football. Without much of a track record, Worrell guided Brock to a 12-2 record, including a staggering upset of Wall in the regional semifinals. Worrell built this program from the ground up, and the team turned heads all throughout 2014. It’s safe to say it was, for the most part, through Worrell’s leadership.
Class 2A Coach of the Year: Jeff Kasowski, Bremond
Bremond entered the season with big expectations and met them, winning the 2A Division II state title. In the land of giants in Division II, with dozens of tradition-rich programs, Bremond rose above the rest, beating powerhouse after powerhouse en route to the state championship. The Tigers played on the big stage with poise and pulled the rope in the same direction. “Coming from a town that has high expectations of success in sports, in general, and in football to do it in my hometown in come-from-behind fashion, it was just awesome," Kasowski said.
Class 1A Coach of the Year: Larry Roskens, Groom
Roskens was put in a very difficult spot, taking over as head coach late in the summer after spending three years at Groom as an assistant. But Roskens and the Tigers responded, running all the way to the state title game with a lights-out defense. It's rare for first-year coaches to have this much success; it's even more rare when they have so little time at the helm.
Private School Coach of the Year: Michael Johnson, Dallas Bishop Dunne
Johnson — coaching at his alma mater — is the youngest coach in the district, but that didn't have any effect on his ability to guide the Falcons. Led by a balanced squad, the Falcons beat rival Bishop Lynch for the first time since 1990, then took down Plano Prestonwood for the TAPPS Division I state title, its first championship in 24 years.
