The group of 15 softball players gathered for a picture with a large banner in Monroe, La., Tuesday evening after winning the championship game to advanced to the World Series in Michigan.
“It’s great that we are representing Alice in the World Series,” said Bianca Chapa, second baseman. “For the first five innings, it was close - zero to zero.”
The District 22 Big League Division team started rallying late in the game and shutout the Quitman, La. team 6-0. The girls are now heading to the World Series in Kalamazoo, Mich. from Aug. 4 to 11 in the under 18 category.
The coaches said they believe this was the first time a Texas team has made the Softball World Series and most likely the first time for any Alice team. The team is made up of girls from Alice, San Diego and Kingsville. This is the first time the team has advanced passed state and regionals.
“It’s hard to put into words, the girls are so excited,” said coach J.D. Gonzalez. “With the girl’s prior experience in softball, we’ve been real strong. It’s breathtaking. It’s a big thing for us.”
Gonzalez is assisted by coaches Greg Flores and Mike Gonzalez.
“It hasn’t hit me, but we’ve been working hard,” said Zalysa Perez, the team’s pitcher. “We played three games, and they were all shutouts.”
The team will soon be headed back home and will be seeking donations for their expenses to make the trip to Michigan.
The girls will be provided new uniforms from the league and will have host families during their stay in Michigan, but other expenses to pay for the trip and food are not included.
“We will be reaching out to our communities in Alice, San Diego and Kingsville for needed assistance,” Gonzalez said.
To help with monetary donations, contact Gonzalez at 361-562-9223 or Roman Gonzalez with the West Alice Youth Center at 361-701-1464.
Coach Gonzalez said the team’s goal is to bring the top trophy home.
“We hope we can take it a step forward” “and bring the World Series home,” he said.
