Marc Lozoya set a state record Thursday night as the Bulldogs remained undefeated in District 29-5A with a 63-35 victory over Winn.
Lozoya set the Texas record for receiving yards with 17 catches for 454 yards and six touchdowns. The previous record was 394 yards from Fort Worth Southwest’s Robbie Rhodes in 2011. Lozoya, who received a Gatorade shower after the game, finished only two yards shy of the national record set last season by Kraig Pruett with 456 yards for Waldport in Oregon.
“It’s an honor,” Lozoya said. “I couldn’t do it without my line. I couldn’t do it without my quarterback Aaron Swain. He’s the one who put the ball in the right places. I feel blessed right now. I don’t have any words.”
“That was exceptional,” Alexander coach Joel Lopez said. “It’s one of the best games out of a receiver I’ve ever seen. We talked to Marc about catching the football because he is extremely dangerous when he has the ball in the open field. He had some drops last week he felt really bad about. This week he came out to play. It’s just a matter of getting the ball in his hands and he did the rest.”
Swain finished the game completing 24-of-31 passes for 545 yards with seven touchdowns and an interception. Running back Xavione Skaggs ran eight times for 112 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 31 yards and a score.
“We’re sitting in a good position,” Lopez said. “We’ve taken care of some teams that have played well throughout the year. I was impressed with Winn’s offense. They kept Del Rio off the field. They have good players on offense. We had to capitalize every time we had the ball.”
