I know VE"S defense performed horribly in week 1 against Gonzales. I believe we gave up 600 yards on the ground. But in talking to some coaching friends of mine Chris Lackey is actually a well respected DC. He came from CLeburne and did some good things for that team on Defense. He has not been here long and they said just give him some time and he will improve the defense. So patience is the key.........the kids are learning a new system under him and will need time to adjust to correct the mental mistakes they made last week. The good thing is mental mistakes can be corrected..........the physical one's will take time in the weight room and in conditioning in general. I really wish the school district would pony up and spend money on a state of the art strength and conditioning facility for both VE and VW. But that is a whole other story.

I don't know if you can coach want, need And desire. And giving up 600 yards on the grounds to Katy, might be ok, but not to a 3a team, period. There is more to the story, we just don't know what it is as of yet. I hate to see kids struggle like this in particular because of stupid decisions made by adults.

East's problems aren't the x's and o's. So that defensive coordinator isn't gonna make a difference. East plays with no "ganas". No desire no nothing. They looked absolutely bored in the Alice scrimmage. You can't coach desire. Nick Saban couldnt fix East's defense at this point.

You can convince someone to fake it. But that's not real. So what you're saying is........a coach can't get more out of a kid than he has to give? Bull......otherwise smaller, slower couldn't ever do it. And no it takes more than will, heart and sprit. Assignments followed, offseason etc. Others on here also know football. Opinions vary, but some of on here played for some damn good coaches that also taught some life lessons too.

You can get "more" out of kids that want to be there in the first place. That's not the same as coaching "desire" to kids that just don't have it. Different argument.

You can convince someone to fake it. But that's not real. cochino, you obviously know nothing about being a Leader and being a football Coach. That is the main part of any Coach or Leader's job. It is to motivate. To motivate is to teach, coach and mentor for those to execute the plan. There are poor Coaches and Leaders just as there are great Coaches and Leaders. So if a Coach cannot coach his players to have the want, need and desire to excel on the football field, then he is a failure to himself, to his players, to the parents, to the school, and to the community. Now a Coach cannot "Make" any player do what he does not want to do. That player can make that choice and suffer the consequences of that choice. Great Coaches and Leaders will find a way to motivate. Not every player responds to the same motivational tools. Great Coaches and Leaders have the responsibility to find what tool will motivate the players to execute the Coach's plan.

That's not what I'm saying. You can't coach "desire".

And I'm also sure there are some that know something neither of us know.

A high school football coach needs to have football knowledge, obviously. A head coach biggest challenge is being a great motivator.
