5A it is Region 1 because they split DFW teams and the champs have come from there most years. 4A it has to be region 4 because they have 6 straight champions. Have to agree. I grew up and went to what is now called a 5A school in DFW. I just don't remember there being that many what is called 4A now in the area. Maybe I just didn't pay attention because it was all about the biggest classification for me at the time since that is what we were. You're probably right that back in those days there weren't many 4A schools in DFW. The biggest difference is that most of the schools in DISD and FWISD have been depopulated so much that they're now 4A (or even 3A in some cases.) Plus, a lot of the new growth areas in DFW (i.e. Frisco, Denton, Northwest) are building smaller high schools than were built in the '70s and '80s. Frisco will be up to 8 high schools by 2015, Northwest has a third high school opening in 2015. The other difference... looking at the UIL's realignment packet, the cutoff for 4A (now 5A) in 1976 was 1220. Even as late as 1990 it was only 1460. What constitutes a "large" high school now was very different than in the '70s and '80s. Back then if you had 1500 students you were 5A... definitely at the low end of 5A, but still 5A. In fact some schools that were 5A then and are now in 4A actually have more students now than they did then. Others dropped down mostly because the district opened more high schools, and may wind up moving back up because of growth if the district doesn't build any more (i.e. the Denton schools.) Plus, there are some exceptions, but a lot of the "DFW" schools in 4A are really on the periphery of the Metroplex (Aledo, Denton, Prosper, Lovejoy.) Or they're really not what I would consider part of the Metroplex... I wouldn't call Waxahachie and Cleburne part of the Metroplex, though some people would probably classify them that way.

But in the mid to late '60s for instance Aledo had a hard time fielding an 11 man team. It, Cleburne, Grapevine nor Waxahachie were any where near being part of the Metroplex nor was Burleson or Grapevine or Denton. Grapevine was a four way stop with (A) gas station where we bought ice and cokes on the way to the lake to go water skiing.

The research is ONLY from FALL 2000 through FALL 2012.OK, Here's what I gleaned from the above info: If you thought Region IV was the best maybe you were only thinking the last three years... Then you'd be correct. However since 2000 Region II has won more state championships and any other Region. Other interesting tid-bits. - Region III and Region IV are the only two regions that have been shut out of a State Championship in a given year.
- Region I owns 5a DI since 2000 with 7 State Championships
- Region II is the only region to have won over 60% in a given year with 6 of 9 State Championships in 2001
- Region II & III both have won just over 50% of the State Championships 5 of 9 in 2003, 2004, & RIII 5 of 10 in 2006
- Region I has not had a 3a D2 State Championship
- Region IV is leading 4a D1 by two Championships with 5 since 2000 (Thank you Lake Travis 4 D1 & 1 in D2)
- Region IV is a distant FOURTH in State Championships since 2000!
Anyway, hope you enjoy looking over the chart! Is it Friday yet?

Another interesting tidbit: between 2005-11, Region I won six of seven state championships in 5A-D1.
It would have been 7 of 8, except that Allen moved to Region II in 2012! Allen was in Region I when they won their first championship in 2008.
