The Blitz
When it comes to the three key areas of the defense, there are two teams that come to mind in 27-4A, that should provide a major stranglehold at the top of the district standings. The Alamo Heights Mules and Kerrville Tivy Antlers are the two to watch after both ended the 2012 season with double-digit margin of victories and both bring back some very solid athletes from those 2012 defensive units. The Mules will count on linebackers Zach McConnell and Jay Hargrove alongside DB Jake Cilfone for provide the spark while the Antlers counter with DL Bryan Mejia, LB Paeyton Becker and DB Josh Appel. Both teams are experienced and talented enough to help propel their respective teams a few rounds deep into the playoffs. The Champion Chargers will rely on its defense heavily in 2013 to help get themselves back into the position it was in last season as they split for the district title. Anything less than a playoff spot and improvement on defense from its 2012 performance will be considered a major disappointment for the team. Hays Consolidated excelled last season and should have enough this season on the defensive side to get them into a playoff spot providing the offense can remain as strong as it was last season too. Seguin will be a key sleeper in the district and playoff race but they will need their defense to go beyond the expectations if they intend to knock off a team or two in the playoff stranglehold. Schertz Clemens will be much improved and have nowhere to go but upwards in 2013, however, they much like Kyle Lehman and Lockhart, the Buffaloes will have a major mountain to climb.
