For hundreds of high school football teams across the state of Texas, spring practice starts this week, meaning that the 2013 Texas high school football season is unofficially underway. The beauty of the beginning of the season in any sport is the same: a fresh start, a new beginning, and unbridled hope and optimism.
And why not? Literally every team can win a state championship in 2013. But some will have to travel farther than others to get there.
The fact of the matter is that the closer you were to a state title last year, the better shot you have to win the title this year. That's why the defending champions are almost always considered title favorites, and anyone who finished in the top 10 last year is generally considered contenders.
But that's not always the case. There are always teams that come from outside the postseason rankings and surprise everyone. Call them what you want “sleepers, surgers, party-crashers“ but they are very real, and for teams that didn't finish in the rankings last year, it's what they're hoping to become.
Now, it's impossible to predict who it's going to be next year “and really, we won't know who they truly are until a few weeks into the season“ but we here at DCTF most certainly have our eyes on a couple of teams in each classification to go from out of the postseason rankings in 2012 to contending for a title in 2013.
Again, these are just a couple of the teams we've got our eyes on, but here are some of our picks for the teams ready for a surge in 2013.
Class 5A
Lake Travis: Yes, the Cavs missed out on our postseason rankings after their first-round bow-out. Even without QB Baker Mayfield, they're a threat because of their depth.
Converse Judson: A second year under coach Mark Smith, big-time defenders like LBs Justin Johnson and Malik Pryor back? Yeah, we're buying the Rockets.
Arlington Martin: Just because RB Kyle Hicks is off to TCU doesn't mean the Warriors are going to lie down. Expect the defense led by DE Myles Garrett to lead the way.
