This would have been the year to have Spring ball.
"The board also reduced the number of coaching duty days — the extra days coaches use for football practice before the start of the school year. Coaches used to count on 15 duty days; the board reduced that to 10 days, for an estimated savings of $30,000."
I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen across the state. There's a sizable shortfall to make up for, and its not responsible to put athletics before academics. Its going to be rough for teachers and students from here on out.

Not to sound like we walked 10 miles in the snow to school, but back in the day we didn't have all the coaches they have today. It was one coach for 7th, 8th & two for 9th and one extra for Jr. High. JV had 2. Varsity had 3. Not saying you don't need them but schools will have to learn how to get by with less or use the booster club.

Now you have position coaches and so forth, but...they all, except on at GP, work a lot of long, hard hours.

I also played when conditions were like that. Only one problem. we only had like 30 kids on each junior high team. When i coached at E-E, we had 60 to 80 kids come out for 7th grade and the same for 8th.

Economy is still on weak ground and might take on more water. Debt talks in Washington might lead to further reductions to money for the states which means the state might have to take on more mandates that Washington in alot cases do noty pay or pays the states very little for now. Plus if the economy goes south, the revenues might not be there to pay for what we are paying for with this scaled back budget. Are the oil and gas tax monies going to be there? Hopefully the predictions will hold true, but EPA is already starting to "question" the frackling methods used for shale drilling. Throw that wrench into there and what will happen if they start cutting back on the Eagle Ford? The oil and gas tax fund wil start dwendling.

Both practiced together, but played seperately of course. A -Team on Thursday, B-Team on Sat. We had two coaches for the entire 7th grade program. What might have to happen in the larger schools if this becomes a long term issue is your "specialty" coaches having to coach two teams again.

The oil and gas tax fund wil start dwendling. there is a lot of investments being made right now associated with this latest "boom" manufacturing plants, gas plants, pipe lines, millions of dollar being invested i cant see in the future that this will come to a halt, EPA or anyone else. i think the biggest concern with the fracking is in the northeast at the marcellus shale. there is alot of ground water testing going on and they are finding contaminated ground water due to the fracking process plus they have no way to dispose of the fluids or treat it. tax dollar dwindling i dont see that for 10-15yrthen what will the economy be like then?

I heard from my aunt last night and she said the Mathis band won't be traveling to away games this season. I doubt they'll be the only school to implement this as a cost-saving measure.

When looking at fracing...the areas that are being drilled in the Eagle Ford are much less populated than the Marcellus Shale play. I figured Texas would come out just fine with the oil and gas taxes. The wells are coming on like gangbusters, but the decline curve is greater than first anticipated. This only means that more wells will be drilled (great for us) keeping more people employed and keeping the oil and gas tax revenues high. It's the perfect storm for a while. I have some friends who are welders and they have made a killing and have backlog with no end in sight. This play has been a nice shot in the arm.
