Alot has been said Refugio hadnt played anyone in preseason,Refugio 62 Ingleside 27. Ingleside played El Campo to a close game 20 to 31, Ingleside lost without 5 defensive starters out. Refugio did hit the first game of the season in midseason form. Is it because of the matchup of the teams or can you go by comparing scores, or a little of both? Kramcat, I think you can get a 'general feel' for overall team power looking at comparitive scores and such but it boils down to individual matchups in head to head ball games. Also, you hit on it when you said that your bobcats were in mid-season form starting the season. Some teams are, some are not. My team, Steele typically is not a great team early in the year but when week 11 rolls around they play some nasty football. In years past SA Madison has been great out of the gate but then tended to fade into the sunset. Last year and this year they've reversed that trend somewhat albeit with runs through R4 5a D1 which is by far the weaker bracket. Judson is another example of what I'm speaking of when Rutledge coached them. If you were gonna play the Rockets you damn well wanted them in week 1, or even mid-season......but you didn't want any of what they had come playoff time.

Kent Harris was a 16 ft polevaulter in high school he went on and vaulted for a D 1 school. Region 4 had 4 guys vaulting 15 ft plus in 3a that year one from Kenedy, Karnes City and Yoakum. Refugio had a 7 ft plus high jumper James Lott he broke the national record that year in 83 with 7ft 4 and 3/4 inches. Some of the best field events in the nation taking place South of San Antonio.

I think EB has a chance in this game, a slim one. Here's what I'm looking for to see what they make of their opportunity:
When EB on Defense: 1. We know Refugio beat Lex with Silvas in the Wildcat formation. So the first thing I'm looking for is a defensive shift when Silvas is in Shotgun or if there's 3 running backs when Refugio is in shotgun formation. If EB stays in man coverage in this instance, it will be a long night. EB will get beat the same way Lex did, by the Refugio running game. Look to see where the EB LB's are playing to give you a hint. If EB's LB's are split wide and safety's shallow they are in a man/zone coverage - Refugio will NOT pass on this coverage. The question is do they shift out of it when Refugio is in a running formation from the Shotgun. 2. Matchups - I put 6'5" on 6"1" Long covers #9 and Slanina has #5, manning Slanina up with #9 is a mistake. A. He gets run to death covering deep patterns every play of the night rendering him fatigued on offense. B. #5 runs wild on whoever EB trys to put on him. I think Slanina has to cover #5. This match up takes both #5 and #9 out of Refugio's offense. Yes, Long is a good defender against the run, but 10 others have to step up. Long can rest on offense, Slanina can't. 3. QB Pressure - If EB does what Lex did to Refugio, man / zone, you have secondary coverage but have no blitzing ability. Now the match-up is Offensive linve vs. Defensive Line. The winner of this match-up determines what you happens in the secondary (coverage). There's nothing worse than a pressured QB that has no where to throw the ball. This takes you back to #1 above.
When EB is on Offense: 1. Pass - EB will have to throw the ball. My guess is Refugio will have 9 in the boxes until EB makes them respect the pass. IMO it doesn't matter if #10 or #14 is at QB - EB will not win this game unless they throw at least 12 passes in this game. 2. Slanina - A. Whether at QB or Slot he has to have 15 touches, using him as a decoy does not count as a touch. B. The EB RB's have to block when they don't have the ball. The EB RB's blocking against Blanco was pathetic from what I've been told. There is not a player on the Refugio roster that will catch #10 in a foot race, not even with Herring pushing them from the sideline. 3. Something New and Different - Refugio will be prepared to stop what EB has done all year. Is EB prepared to do something they haven't done much of this year (maybe a screen pass for example)? Yes, EB runs to slot T very effectively and I'm not suggesting they abandoned it, BUT EB will not win this game unless they do a few things Refugio has not seen.
About this time 48 hours from now we will know the answer to most of these questions. ballglovebatMember Posts: 3Joined: Wed Dec 05, 2012 8:52 pm Top

I completely agree. I'd say Refugio is about a 65/35 favorite in this game, or about 10 points. That means that EB will have to play lights out and have some mistakes as well by Refugio to win.
