Glad to see the players still show this kind of class.
This story reminds me of my senior year. We took in a short, chubby, bow legged kid named Marcos Daniels. He was harassed and bullied horribly by his classmates. One day it got so bad he entered the varsity locker room as a freshman (which was a no-no) crying about some kids bullying him and some of us took care of that for him. Throughout the rest of the year he shared lockers with seniors on the team and walked around with the varsity football players including eating at our table. Back then we didn't see it as too big a deal, but looking back now as an adult, you realize how much it means to people. Sad to say he passed away shortly after he graduated, but I hope some of us made a difference.
Pretty awesome of those players to use their status to bring some happiness into someone's life.

Class act by the Cal players.
The only part of the story that made me think the writer had issues of his own was saying players got over all the time and bullied people. HUH? I sure as heck don't remember getting over especially in classes. If anything our teachers / coaches were on us harder than anyone else is the way I remember it. If we got sent to the dean of boys and got licks or something that was the easy part, next came the coaches who were much more "animated" and then our parents for the atomic part.

That's what I'm talking about boog! We had a couple of brothers with Down Syndrome while I was at SC. Nobody gave them a lick of chit there, NOBODY......I can assure you of that. Those brothers were great and I loved the way they lived life in that they were always happy and didn't seem to have a care in the world. God Bless all three of them Davis boys! I have not heard anything of them in the past 20+ years and truly hope that they are being taken care of the way they should. I have a cousin that is now over 50 with the same disorder and now a cousin's young son on my other side of the family was born with it. These are truly special people who love unconditionally and do not seem to see any bad in any one!

Saw this story the other night and wondered if it would be posted here. Indeed it shows another side of these kids that are often labeled (and unfairly)as self serving Jocks. There are some that fit that label, but few really do.
I have never understood why people make fun of the disabled or mentally challenged if you will. Most of them are where they are in life through no fault of their own. Put yourself in their shoes and see how you'd like it is something that should always be kept in mind when it comes to the bullying/picking angle. And to think of the added presure these individuals parents/caregivers have to feel as well. My kids have a standing warning that I better NEVER hear you make fun of people in this situation such as using the word "retard" or they will feel the wrath from me. It's kind of like the "n-word" or any other racial/ethnic slur IMO. Zero tolerence. I give adults a bad look who use that word loosely too.

Zero tolorance for making fun of somebody for a mental or pysical challenge.

I grew up in a house where the "n" word was used as much as the words "it" or "is". I hated it. I have corrected many people who have used the word publicly (both the "n" word and the "r" word. Just completely classless people stoop to those words.

Just completely classless people stoop to those words. I could write a book on my life experiences there. I grew up in a very racially prejudice family from both sides of the family. I was never that way though. I was bullied on because of my name (Polish). But I never backed down. I saw mentally challenged kids bullied on by others and it really was disturbing to me. My sister was involved with a Mexican guy and got pregnant (and later married him). The racial prejudism really came out from the family then. I met my wife in the Army in Germany and married her (some here have met her). She is African-American (Father) and Panamanian (Mother). The hate from the family against me was unreal. Many went to their graves disowning me. I have experienced discrimination first-hand with my wife being with me. Refused service at a Car dealership, smacked by a white waitress (that my wife had to restrain me from striking back), name-calling from all races, etc. I have an autistic son that has been bullied by kids at Flour Bluff. It is never acceptable. I agree that many athletes get the "Bad" nametag of being bullies and jerks for the very few that really are. Way to go Coach Danaher and the Calallen Wildcats Football players!

An awesome story- absolutely beautiful young lady. My hat goes off to the players and coaches who helped make her dream come true.
