GP coming off a quarter final playoff run looks to return to the playoffs this year.
PORTLAND — Gregory-Portland needed just one big run to knock state-ranked West Oso from the unbeaten ranks Tuesday night.
And what a run it was, as the Lady Cats turned a three-point deficit into a 14-point lead en route to posting a 54-43 victory in a nondistrict girls basketball showdown between returning playoff teams.
G-P (6-1), which reached the Region IV-4A quarterfinals last season, won its fifth straight game in the process.
"I thought we handled the ball really well in the second half," Lady Cats coach Vince Stark said. "We passed the ball down the floor instead of dribbling it and got a lot of easy buckets on the backside because of that."
The fourth-ranked Bears, who reached the Region IV-3A semifinals last season, dropped to 2-1.
"They shut it down there for a while in the third quarter," West Oso coach Roy Williams said. "After they got themselves back together, they tried to make a push for it but just didn't get there. They were trying."
G-P standout guard Sarah Wisor scored a team-high 12 points but she also effectively drove the lane to pass to her teammates for key layups in the decisive third quarter in which the Lady Cats outscored West Oso 21-6.
"I think Sarah had 10 assists tonight," Stark said. "Everybody focuses on her and they run two people at her. She just has amazing vision and she did a great job of distributing the ball."
Guard Makenzie West and post Mariah Blue also combined for 19 points for the Lady Cats.
West Oso forward Brittany Clark, a returning all-state performer, scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first half. Clark also finished with eight rebounds, despite reinjuring her ankle during the second half of the game.
Bears post Victoria Blankenship also scored 11 points, including nine in the second half.
G-P trailed by three points in the closing seconds of the second quarter before using a 23-6 run to take a 43-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
Eight different players scored in that decisive spurt for the Lady Cats, as Blue led the way with five points, while post Kelsey Fishbeck and Wisor scored four points each.
G-P guards Amber Grote, Bailee Barrera, D'Neacia White and West and post Mckenzie Hamilton combined for the other 10 points.
The largest lead for either team in the first half was six points, as Clark's back-door layup off a nice entry pass from post Regine Griffin gave West Oso that 18-12 lead.
G-P used a 10-5 run to pull to within one point going into the half.
West's layup following the Bears' 17th turnover of the first half — which also started the game's decisive run — helped the Lady Cats pull to within 23-22 just before the halftime buzzer sounded.
"We're young and so we didn't manage the ball as well as we will later on down the road," Williams said. "They missed some reads and didn't read the floor like they should, but they'll get it."
