It's not the school's fault their kids died of heat-related illnesses, it's the parent's fault for not getting them ready to get in the heat. Funny what people can do sometimes!

Funny how you never heard about "heat related deaths" among HS players in the 70's & 80's. Trust me, it was just as hot back then and we didn't get near as many water breaks.

A mouth full of water was about it. I don't recall anyone so much having to be taken to the training room to cool off, much less the hospital for anything heat related. Sure, the lazy butts who didn't workout that much during the summer threw up their breakfast or afternoon snacks, but that was about it. Sending this to the legal system was bound to occur sooner rather than later. Perhaps that is why the UIL is being more proactive with reducing two a days? But if you are a parent who has a kid that is going to play outdoor sports of any kind this time of the year or even in May when it can get pretty darn hot as well, it would be well worth your kids health to restrict the Xbox and direct them to the lawnmower or something that keeps them outdoors for a couple of hours a day.

Comes down to parenting. So many turn their kid over to the school to raise. We used to have little stickers on the mirrors in the Navy that said you are looking at the person responsible for your safety. IOW you were the one to learn and practice the things you needed to know to be as safe as possible in a very hazardous place. Same thing again. Personal responsibility and if you are a parent then also for your kids. The once over "sports physical" is in most cases a joke. "Turn your head and cough" OK, you're good. Please. A real physical and prep for sports is what is needed. If you haven't been working hard at getting ready months before practice starts you are not going to be ready and are taking a huge risk.

I watched two teammates go to the hospital after they body locked. About as bad as it got. I lost 10lbs after one day of two a days and I received an IV. We did it in full pads as punishment for what Coach D felt was a less than total effort. Awful. It is hotter now than a decade ago, but not substantially enough to make that kind of difference. Too many kids today drink energy drinks instead of water, sodas, and likely crappier diets coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle.

Yup.........& they ran the donkey snot out of us! The difference is that we spent all summer outside working our butts off & playing from early in the morning until dark thirty while kids today put a lot more time in front of the boob tube, computers, smart phones, & video games. They are not acclimated to the heat like we were.

Processed foods and sugars will void your body of some of the stuff you need.
