I am a local football official and I am a health care provider at one of the local hospitals in corpus. I wont mention the name for obvious reasons. I have on occasion consulted with other regions when it came to proper hydration and what to look for in the early stages of heat stroke or exhaustion. Typically the human body is 67-72 % water. The more body fat one has the percentage of water in the body decrease. This may mean instead of 67% water in the body, one with extra padding may only be able to hold lets say 60%. Water is not only used to cool down the body but it also assists in basic chemical and body functions. Mild signs of dehydration may be darkened urine, increased thirst. Moderate to severe signs of dehydration may be inability to urinate, confusion, head ache, cotton mouth and signs of inbalance and confusion. We loose close to a half galloon of water just by sleeping needless to say doing physical activity in the heat and humidity. There are a lot of literature and old wives tales on proper hydration. My suggestions come from clinical observations and experience. Two a days are very important for a football program and preparing for them is equally important. First, do not eat heavy foods prior to going out for practice. The heavier and more complex the foods you eat the more energy and water is needed for digestion. Pastas and simple foods would be good but watch the apples or high fiber foods this will shift water and energy for digestion. It is also important eating after workouts are also important. The heavier the foods the longer the recovery time. The excellent fruits to eat are grapefruit, grapes, oranges, bananas, pineapples and watermelon. Anything with a high water content. I added bananas because of its soft texture and easily digestable. I would also suggest prior to two a days is a full physical exam by the family doctor. This exam should not be interpreted with the exam needed to play it is a basic exam only. You need some lab work done and cardiac studies. Ive officiated a game a couple years ago where a well known QB had a heart attack after a TD and after the autopsy it was found that the QB had a congenital heart defect. It wasnt detected upon yearly physical exams because he was not stressed for any monitoring devices could pick it up. A constant intake of sports drinks is also not a good idea because sports drinks contain large amounts of sugars and salts and potassium. Dont get me wrong they are good but not to be the only thing to drink. Drinking water should be an automatic response. When in doubt drink a glass of water. A good rule of thumb is if you urinate yellow drink drink and drink untill its clear. I prepare before I officiate a game by drinking untill I have clear urine then I drink a liter of water every couple of hours including 1 liter one hour prior to pre game conference. I always have at least 1 big gatorade 4 hrs till game time. This is just a quick reference I have more detailed information send me your e mail address and I will send you the complete version. May god watch over and protect us. AWESOME! Thanks for sharing.

Holy hell the heat up here is awful. The midwest is baked to a crisp. I drove in to OKC around 1pm and it was already 106.

Dog days of summer are here. 100 degrees here in the city means 105 around Alice. Sunday i was heading to the stables intent on going to kingsville to hit a little white ball around for nine holes, well when i parked the truck and arose from the cab and just about melted, i proceed to park the truck in the shade and commenced to quenching my thirst with a couple of adult beverages. needless to say screw that golf game and work in the shade, dude it was over 110 degrees (heat index) and my hay field looks like burnt chit, not looking good for the end of the year harvest.
