Everybody enjoying the nice weather?
OMG!
I left NB yesterday at 5:30 and my thermometer in the truck stayed between 108-110 all the way home. Horrible!
It has now been 43 days since we had rain and it is bad, very bad! The fires up North in CO and elsewhere are a bad reminder of what we could be facing here with all the tall grass from the spring rains now completely dried out.
We had a heck of a lightning storm last night as areas just south of Floresville got a nice rain. Lucky sonofaguns!

Heck, coming back from pride camp makes me worn out and do nothing! This drought is ridiculous! I'm still praying for rain! I have some friends who live right near the fire in CO and they say that it sure is affecting everything up there. Luckily, they evacuated and are just fine. I knew that there was some good rain in Floresville and I heard it would go up to Schertz but didn't! Lucky Son of a guns indeed!

Johnston has been there occasionally, but to see us work out. From what I see, the coaches want to win now, which is a good sign right now. The kids look really excited and they have gotten his attention for sure!

He will get very involved soon and all the way down to the middle school level. I'll promise you that Corbett MS will soon be running the same offense and defense as Clemens does! It all starts off there and the sooner you start 'molding' football players out of the athletes, the sooner SC will be back winning playoff football games.

I was in the hospital all day yesterday with a severe heat stroke in which 50% of my kidneys shut down. I'm okay now but have the next 4 days off.

That is serious buisness there for sure. My buddy runs several crews down in the oil fields installing water pipe. He instructed them to start at 6 and EVERYBODY is done for the day at 2. They actually have 3 or 4 'cooling trailers' they move around so that the guys can take short breaks and go in and cool down. Glad you are OK man!

It happened late morning getting a load ready to drive up to Victoria. I collapsed and my co-workers saved my life dumping non-stop water on me, icing my neck and arm pits. That was my first ever ambulance ride.

Glad you are ok but I have to warn you, everyone I have known who once had that had to be very careful thereafter as the heat would get to them much quicker from then on. One is my wife. We were racing at Texas World Speedway in Collie Station one summer several years ago when she went down just all of a sudden. She is ok now years later but like I said can't take much heat now.

Sorry to hear that JH, I did some biking in brazos park in Houston with my sister. Wow, I damn near had the same thing happen to me. 100 degrees, nearly 100% humidity, I've grown too accustomed to Oklahoma's drier heat. It was bad. Was having 2-a-day flashbacks.

LOL

I am a local football official and I am a health care provider at one of the local hospitals in corpus. I wont mention the name for obvious reasons. I have on occasion consulted with other regions when it came to proper hydration and what to look for in the early stages of heat stroke or exhaustion. Typically the human body is 67-72 % water. The more body fat one has the percentage of water in the body decrease. This may mean instead of 67% water in the body, one with extra padding may only be able to hold lets say 60%. Water is not only used to cool down the body but it also assists in basic chemical and body functions. Mild signs of dehydration may be darkened urine, increased thirst. Moderate to severe signs of dehydration may be inability to urinate, confusion, head ache, cotton mouth and signs of inbalance and confusion. We loose close to a half galloon of water just by sleeping needless to say doing physical activity in the heat and humidity. There are a lot of literature and old wives tales on proper hydration. My suggestions come from clinical observations and experience. Two a days are very important for a football program and preparing for them is equally important. First, do not eat heavy foods prior to going out for practice. The heavier and more complex the foods you eat the more energy and water is needed for digestion. Pastas and simple foods would be good but watch the apples or high fiber foods this will shift water and energy for digestion. It is also important eating after workouts are also important. The heavier the foods the longer the recovery time. The excellent fruits to eat are grapefruit, grapes, oranges, bananas, pineapples and watermelon. Anything with a high water content. I added bananas because of its soft texture and easily digestable. I would also suggest prior to two a days is a full physical exam by the family doctor. This exam should not be interpreted with the exam needed to play it is a basic exam only. You need some lab work done and cardiac studies. Ive officiated a game a couple years ago where a well known QB had a heart attack after a TD and after the autopsy it was found that the QB had a congenital heart defect. It wasnt detected upon yearly physical exams because he was not stressed for any monitoring devices could pick it up. A constant intake of sports drinks is also not a good idea because sports drinks contain large amounts of sugars and salts and potassium. Dont get me wrong they are good but not to be the only thing to drink. Drinking water should be an automatic response. When in doubt drink a glass of water. A good rule of thumb is if you urinate yellow drink drink and drink untill its clear. I prepare before I officiate a game by drinking untill I have clear urine then I drink a liter of water every couple of hours including 1 liter one hour prior to pre game conference. I always have at least 1 big gatorade 4 hrs till game time. This is just a quick reference I have more detailed information send me your e mail address and I will send you the complete version. May god watch over and protect us.
