PORTLAND — Flour Bluff's Ross Carter scattered five hits and had three hits of his own to lead Flour Bluff to a 7-3 win over Gregory-Portland in Game 1 of the Class 4A area playoff series on Friday night at Wildcat Field.
The Hornets now head back home for Game 2 of the series at 11 a.m. today at Flour Bluff. A third game, if necessary, would follow 30 minutes after that game.
Carter single-handedly did in the Wildcats, driving in two runs and striking out six 'Cats batters in the process.
Meanwhile G-P starter Ervin Polasek struggled with his control, starting with the first inning.
The Hornets got three walks and two hits to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first off Polasek. The big hit came from Carter, who singled to drive in Alex Legamaro, who had walked, and Lucas Humpal.
The Wildcats got right back in the game in the bottom half, scoring twice off Carter. Carlos Flores singled and after being sacrificed to second, he came around to score when Travis Geiser singled.
Polasek then reached when he was hit by a pitch after Geiser moved to third. Courtesy runner Tanner Geiser, running for Polasek, broke for second and when Carter tried to get him, Travis Geiser broke for home and got under the tag by Lucas Humpal to make the score 3-2.
In the top of the fifth, Polasek again lost his control, walking both Alex Legamaro and Humpal. Carter followed with a base hit to load the bases before Josh Gonzales singled to score Legamaro and Humpal. Carter then came around to score when Ryan Fitzgerald doubled to make the score 6-2.
The Hornets extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the sixth after Kolton Mims singled and scored when Humpal drove in his second run of the game.
G-P cut its deficit to 7-3 in the bottom of the inning, Blake Lowry opened things with a single and moved to second when the ball was misplayed. Two outs later Lowry scored when Ruben Martinez reached on a Hornets error.
Flour Bluff 7,Gregory-Portland 3

The Caller was kind. Too many gifts from GP to a good FB team. Walks, errors--mental and physical, terrible base running and suspect coaching led to our demise-we didn't get any help from the blue guys either. We will need to shake that off and play up to our potential today.

I did not like this story. It's not fair to the one player, it's not fair to his team mates and it's not fair to the other team. Ross made a huge contribution to a team effort and he deserves to be recognized and applauded for it but saying that single handed stuff puts pressure on him that is undeserved and belittles the team effort.
