Magnolia has been on a roll the last few weeks. I'd really be surprised if they beat Brenham though...

By RICHARD BRAY/Sports Editor Published: Wednesday, June 1, 2011 2:37 PM CDT If the top-ranked Brenham Cubs are to reach the UIL State Baseball Championships for the third consecutive season, they’re going to need two more victories against a Magnolia Bulldog squad they defeated twice during the regular season.
But to do that, they’ll need a win from a pitcher not named Ty Schlottmann.
Schlottmann, the Cubs’ ace left-hander who has signed to pitch at Texas A&M next season, earned the win in both the Cubs’ previous victories over the Bulldogs.
In the teams’ first meeting this season, Schlottmann struck out seven while scattering five hits in a 7-1 Brenham victory at Fireman’s Park. Schlottmann got into trouble early, walking Magnolia leadoff man Noah McGowan and allowing a single to Duncan Wendel. McGowan scored on a wild pitch and Colin Turnberg added another single before Schlottmann got things back under control, getting a ground ball and striking out Arkansas commit Jarred Greene to end the inning.
Schlottmann would strike out all three batters he faced in the second, and he retired the final nine batters he faced.
“As the game went on I felt like I was throwing with a little more zip and just feeling stronger as the game went on,” the senior left-hander said. “That’s always a good thing if you’re getting stronger when the game’s going on.”
With the wind blowing in their face, the Cub hitters couldn’t rely on the long ball in support of Schlottmann.
Leadoff man Drake Roberts got things started in the first when he walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and in the second the Cubs rallied for three runs thanks to RBI singles from Colin Crenshaw and Dillon Knebel and an RBI ground ball by Jeremy Zettel.
The Cubs used singles again in the fifth, as Chance Bolcerek singled and scored on a wild pitch, Colten Walla hit an RBI single to score Knebel and Jesse Baker added an RBI sacrifice fly.
“You’ve pretty much got to change your approach,” said Knebel, who went 3-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. “With the wind blowing like this if you put one in the air it could drop, but we want to focus on hitting the ball hard on the ground, line drives, and I think we did a pretty good job of that.”
Catcher Corey Bentke was 2-for-3, and the Cubs finished with nine hits off three different Magnolia pitchers. Bulldogs starter Jordan Schuetz allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings.
“When it’s blowing dead in your face we know you can’t hit a lot of pop ups and you try to hit it to the right side, and we did. It’s more mental than anything,” Brenham coach Jim Long said. “Those are the kinds of things you’ve got to do because when you get into huge parks you’re not going to hit too many home runs anyway.”
The second time the two teams met, Schlottmann again held Magnolia to a single earned run in a 4-2 Brenham victory. The win clinched the District 17-4A championship. Magnolia won the crown in 2009.
“It means a lot,” Long said. “It’s another one in the history books. The kids deserve it with the way they’ve played all year. They just love to play the game and to put another one in the history books with this ballclub is real special.”
Schlottmann threw all seven innings for the Cubs, allowing one earned run on six hits and three walks. He struck out five.
Going into the sixth inning, he had only thrown 65 pitches, and faced his only real challenge of the night when he faced runners on second and third with nobody out. Schlottmann got a comebacker for the first out, then struck out the next two batters he faced.
“That was the only tense moment and he really bore down and got them,” Long said. “I’m really pleased with his performance.”
The Cubs finished with nine hits, but never quite put the game away, leaving nine men on base. Walla’s three hits all came without runners on.
Now the two teams will meet after each made its way through the Class 4A Region III gauntlet. Brenham is coming off a three-game series against Santa Fe. The Cubs won the first game 14-5, but dropped the second game 1-0. In Saturday’s rubber game, the Cubs defeated Santa Fe 18-7 in six innings.
Magnolia is coming off a two-game sweep of Friendswood, defeating the Mustangs 7-6 and 7-1. Garrett Luna hit a first-inning grand slam to spark the Mustangs in the decisive second game.
All three games of the series will be played at Mumford High School. Game 1 will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Game 2 will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Game 3, if necessary, will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Mumford High School is located at 9755 F.M. 50 in Hearne. To get there, take Highway 105 East and turn left on F.M. 50. Take F.M. 50 to Highway 21 and turn right, then turn left to stay on F.M. 50. The school will be on the right.
