BURLESON VS W.F. RIDERS Rider shortstop Ben Bates lobs the ball to first base for an out during the first inning of the Region I-4A Final series opener against Burleson at Hunter Field in Abilene. Gary Rhodes/Special to the Times Record News Rider pitcher Cameron Allen pitches to Burleson pitcher Blake Perkins during the fourth inning of the Region I-4A Final series opener in Abilene Thursday evening. Rider catcher Gaige Green hits a single during the sixth inning of the Region I-4A Final series opener against Burleson at Hunter Field in Abilene Thursday. Gary Rhodes/Special to the Times Record News Rider left fielder Mason Stone hits a double during the second inning of the first game of Region I-4A final series in Abilene against the Burleson Elks. Photos by Gary Rhodes/Special to the Times Record News ABILENE — Cameron Allen was cruising with a one-hit shutout through the first five innings of Thursday night's Region I-4A finals.
Unfortunately, the Burleson Elks finally got to him in the bottom of the sixth after he had set down 14 straight batters and had faced the minimum.
Five singles — only one of them hit hard and two that didn't even leave the infield — spelled disaster for the No. 7 Rider Raiders.
The Elks were able to push two runs across the plate to take a 2-1 win in Game 1 of the best-of-three series at Hunter Field in Abilene.
Game 2 will be back here today at 4 p.m.
This was just the second loss of the playoffs for the Raiders (35-7) and only the third time they scored just one run this season. The Elks are 26-16.
Neither coach was surprised by the pitcher's duel that took less than 90 minutes.
"Both pitchers did a great job," Rider coach Scot Green said. "We couldn't come up with the big two-out hit and they did. They made the plays and that's a big part of it. I thought we were right there, but we just had some bad luck. But that's baseball.
"I thought he (Allen) did a great job. He's tough on himself and a little down, but he did a great job."
Burleson pitcher Blake Perkins (7-3) was involved in a slugfest in last weekend's series against Lake Dallas, seeing his team lose the opener 11-10 when he was relieved after six with a lead.
"He wanted the ball then, and he's wanted it ever since," Burleson coach Chris McKinley. "He wants it all the time. He works fast and gets the job done. We usually start our district games at 7 p.m. and he's usually done by 8:20.
"He (Allen) kept the ball down and kept the meat of our order in check. Thankfully we were able to create a couple runs and got by."
The Raiders wasted doubles by Allen and Mason Stone in the first two innings, but drew first blood with a run in the top of the third.
Ben Bates reached on an error, Ben Cummings sacrificed him to second and Gage Green slapped a single by the first baseman to put the Raiders up 1-0.
Allen (11-2) had given up a one-out single in the top of the first, but that runner was doubled off. He then faced the minimum number of batters until the bottom of the sixth.
After a fly out to the wall by Perkins, No. 8 hitter Tyler Posey drove a single up the middle. Brian Russell followed with a hit-and-run single, and the Elks had runners on the corners.
Leadoff hitter Brandon English hit a grounder to short, but Bates, who was moving to cover second with Russell running, got to the ball but couldn't do anything with it and the tying run scored.
Sabo Murray blooped a 2-2 pitch between first and second that wasn't high enough for it to be called an infield fly, and Christien Sager couldn't reach it, loading the bases.
Power hitter Levi Scott went down on strikes, but a 2-2 curveball to Dalton Deleon got too much of the plate and he lofted it over shortstop to drive in the game winner.
"They got on a roll right there," coach Green said. "Luckily they just got two runs out of it. We were just one call from getting out of it with just one run."
The Raiders got a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, but couldn't make anything happen.
"I was able to get ahead, but I wasn't able to close them out," explained Allen. "I couldn't get them to chase and they were able to manufacture those runs.
"Whatever pitch is called I have to be able to hit a spot. Even when I did they seemed to be able to hit it. Things were just going their way."
"They played a great game," Green said of the Elks. "They're here for a reason. They made every play and they got the hit there at the end.
"You just chalk it up to experience and go on. That's why you play a three-game series. You just come back tomorrow. We'll find out a lot about our character tomorrow."

I'm pulling for Burleson in the upset. Rider's pitching is pretty deep, and they could be dangerous for Moody or Calallen at the state tournament.
