Cornelius "Corky" Gallegos, 41, was arrested just before 10:00 PM last Friday. Corpus Christi Police officers were called to the intersection of Weber and Saratoga after reports of an intoxicated driver who was driving a Ford pick up truck. Once officers located the truck, they pulled it over and identified clues that indicated Gallegos was drunk. He was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. DWI is a Class B misdemeanor. If convicted, Gallegos could face up to 6 months in jail and up to a $2,000 fine.

Sad thing is that this will most likely cost him his job as well. DUI or DWI whatever you want to call it is a serious problem in this country and for every one person that is caught on any given night, I can pretty much guarantee there are 100’s more who did not get caught. I’m not sure of the circumstances behind this arrest, but I do know that now that he has been caught and if proven guilty, this does not automatically make him a bad person or a bad coach. I’m not trying to defend what he did, and yes somebody could have been hurt by his actions, but lets not try and beat the man while he is down.
I’m not proud of some of the things I did in my past, and yes, I’m still ashamed to say this, but I did have a DUI over 20 years ago. I wasn’t a bad person; I just didn’t know when to stop. With that said, if not for that one mistake that night, I would have probably continued to drink and drive until I either killed myself or someone else in an accident. That next day I made a decision that if I could not control when to stop drinking, then the world would be a much safer place with me not drinking, so I have been on the wagon for over 20 years now. I just hope Coach is able to make whatever the right decision is for him, and get help if that is what is needed. As for right now, I’m just thankful nobody was hurt and that he is still alive so he can hopefully make the right decision and hopefully continue to Coach.

This saddens me deeply. Not only do I know Cork as a coach but I remember as a kid going to the moody games and watching him play. It probably will cost him his job unfortunately. But hopefully he will use it as a learning experience. I know his coaching philosophy has always been to build on the positive no matter the circumstances. He still has a whole community who looks up to him for many other reasons.

Please remember, most, if not all of us have driven when we should not have, or done something equally stupid ( I don't drink anymore, but I have driven impaired, and as far as other stupid things, well, I can tell you about my ex-wife!) so let's not judge too harshly.

I will be the first to admit that I have not always used the best judgement myself. As 2fast said, it was just good that no one else was hurt.

I hope things workout and he's learned his lesson. If this is his first offense, maybe the school district will impose other punishment short of termination. That is if he is proven guilty in a court of law or pleads. Gotta a little thing still in effect called the presumption of innocence that has to be followed, even with open and shut things like DUI/DWI. It would be a shame to lose a first rate coach to such a colossal lapse of judgement if indeed he is guilty .

Those that sat his punishment need to look in the mirror! I believe in second chance and teachers after their workday is over are people too. If he loses his job, I say hire a private eye to dig into the school boards past and hound them until they are no longer serving. They need to be practical.

I completely agree with you JD about teachers and what you say. However, they do have a code of ethics they must live by and I know that my wife would be fired if this ever happened to her and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't think twice before doing it. I hope he gets a 2nd chance, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

We all make mistakes and errors in judgement. I would hate to see him lose his job over this. In no way am I condoning DUI, but it would be a little harsh to hold a high school baseball coach to a higher standard than a local judge that did the same thing and plowed over a construction worker. JMO.
